Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight

Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I have a dilema. I've been using thinkpads since I was in highschool
T60 -> R61i -> x201

Now my x201 is falling apart and I am in need of a new notebook. I thought about getting t440 but the screen is not what I am looking for. Also I fear it will overheat like my x201 does.
I have no limit of how much to spend. What do?

Nope, house is being heated to a standard comfy 20 degrees. It's actually slightly warmer upstairs where I am.
>>
Guys, hear me out, please:

I bought a second hand T61, that works great as a budget main machine. The only thing was that it overheated a bit, the temps would go to 80ºC/90ºC very fast, and stay there. I repasted it, but the temps were unchanged. Fast forward a couple of months, one day the fan starts whirring loudly. To the point I think this shit is gonna die. It didn't die, a couple of days later the whirring stopped, and the surprising part is this: the laptop is running much cooler, always around 55ºC/65ºC. I can even play agar.io (pretty impressive, I know), before it was unplayable, because the laptop would instantly get close to 100ºC, and now it goes up to the old temps of ~80ºC.

Anyone has an idea as to what might have happened here?

Some T530s are quad core. Most are not; worse still, a lot of sellers peddle the glorified i5 (aka dual-core i7s) and charge a premium for it. Rather than hunting around for weeks trying to find the FHD/quad core combo, you're better off just getting a W530.

Here's where the illiteracy comes in: I think the speed of the RAM I purchased is 1333, shouldn't I stick to that? Doesn't the motherboard determine what RAM speed I can utilize or something? Or does it just not matter?

Again, thank you and sorry for the stupidity .
>>
>>51812004
its ok to put faster rated RAM in it. it wont run at the faster speed, but youll have it in case you want to transfer to another computer that can utilize the speed. theoretically it should be more reliable too since you would be running it below its rating

just make sure you replace ddr3 with ddr3

It works, difficulty setting it up obviously depends on your choice of distro and general Linux experience. You can always disable the DGPU in BIOS if it gives you trouble

I got a t420 and I read it supports 2screens max. That means I cqn use the t420 screen + one external monitor right? Or will the t420 screen turn off once hooked up to a monitor.

What modification is that? I've just hit a roadblock because of the board not fully fitting into the rollcage, but I can't find the exact spot that's causing the problem. Looking through page after page on the Thinkpads.com forum didn't provide any help on the subject either.

As if this proves anything.
You can't compare laptops and phones in terms of displays because phone displays are higher resolutions for entirely different reasons, you damn moron.
Shorter viewing distance of phone displays requires higher PPI for the display to look nice.

I think about three or four years ago, I believe it was my 7th ThinkPad.
Got it from eBay, the seller had it from storage and listed it as '1995 ThinkPad untested' with blurry photos but one was opened and it was the Butterfly keyboard.
Bought it for $100, the thing turned on after connecting it.
It has a high pitched noise at a certain angle, sadly I don't care for the keyboard on it, uses keycaps and rubber sleeves similar to the Model M4-1 space saver. Twas a chore to use, but I have it for collection, just needs a battery :)

Never look a gift horse in the mouth, deleted and rephrased this comment several times.

As far as core2duos go, I'd prefer an x200 myself. At this point they're both outdated so you might as well pick the lighter machine.

It's not so outdated as to be useless, just not worth the weight and volume really. I think a nice SSD would be a bit of a waste in that machine but you could always reformat it and swap it into your next machine.

If your current printer isn't wireless yet you should put Debian and CUPS/Samba/Airprint on it and make it wireless. I have an ancient Dell XPS hooked up to my old laser printer. Can even print straight from iphone and stuff, shit is pretty cash.

Alternately load it with emulators and games and donate it to a little cousin or charity, or drop the screen res down to 640 x 480 and put pirated minecraft on it.

This is the thinkpad thread so *of course* we're going to recommend a thinkpad instead of basically whatever you have. You could walk in with a cray supercomputer and we'd still tell you to pick up an x220/t420.

Even if the T430 is the 'worst keyboard on a ThinkPad' the T420 would be third or fourth to last, which isn't something to gloat about.

>>51824531
>keyboard layout
People do not like the layout and chicklet keys that are on the T430 and above.
I personally liked the keyboard and really didn't mind it after I had gotten used to it.
The T430 doesn't have the 'classic 6 row', but neither did the T420, its just a 6 row that had removed certain keys from the classics.

>physical hard drive sive
The T430 requires a thinner 7mm 2.5" HDD/SSD rather than the norm 9.5mm drives that were on most laptops. This might not be an issue if you are buying a drive but can be one if you were looking to use a spare that is 9.5mm

>counterfeit battery chip
T430 will not let you charge (unsure if use) 3rd party batteries, so you'll have to stick to OEM.
So buying genuine will cost more
>this probably an odd one as to most of /g/ seems to believe all 3rd party batteries will blow up in your face

Also the T430 is generally pricier

But I believe the performance and efficiency of the T430 was vastly superior, I felt it was just as rugged machine in build quality.
Who cares if people say 'should of gotten a T420', its your machine not theirs.

Thanks man, i'ts nice to see someone here giving you an honest and well thought out answer for once, the t420 probably isn't a bad machine I just feel that it just kind o lags behind the T430 in every way minus the keyboard layout
>>
>>51824531
Reasons to get a T420 over a T430:
1. Better keyboard layout
2. Community support/modifications, Ivy Bridge support is coming up through a modded BIOS, and better screens are available if you can get your hands on one of those custom kits for the T420
3. It's cheaper

Reasons to get a T430 over T420:
1. Better hardware out of the box, you get Ivy Bridge without having to worry about a possibly wonky community solution.
2. Keyboard supposedly feels better to type on, if you ignore the objectively retarded layout.

Louis Rossmann has a lot to say about the new keyboard vs the old one, though you can ignore the part about the trackpad since you're not looking at a T440. Keyboard is same on T430 and T440: http://www.rossmanngroup.com/new-lenovo-thinkpads-terrible-one-button-trackpad-keyboard-layout-going-away/

I think the T420 is a pretty good machine, but so is the T430 if you have the extra money to spend for it and do not mind its faults, but products evolve so there will always be change and features not existing on the newer models.

To me the last classic ThinkPad was the X201
>>
>>51824962

>>
>>51825028

the t420 is a great machine.. i love it, just not the display.. got it for $150 and sold it for $195 after using it for 8 month. I ended up getting an x220 in almost new condition, ips, i5 2520 2.5gb, 8gb, 120gb mSata, 320gb hdd, fingerprint, webcame, genuine lenovo ac adapter and battery last about just under 3 hours. for $200, probably overpaid a bit but ips though.

>>
Should I get an SSD for my x200t? My main consideration for it is durability and the ability to handle shock. Don't get me wrong I am not a 12 year old autist who throws his thinkpad around but I am sure I have bumped it around a few times while carrying it around campus. Will an SSD outlast a harddrive or are they just a meme?
>>
>>51825293
It's the single best upgrade there is for these old thinkpads. Silent, shock resistant, lower power consumption and makes the machine vastly more responsive.

How decent is a HP EliteBook 2560p as a X220 alternative?

Get a bigger SSD, but...

>gaymen
What games do you play on it that don't exist on Linux ?

That looks like a good machine for the price. Nice job!

Yeah, it's not the 'laptop for gaymen' meme, it's more like the poorfag one.

I'm pretty sure League of Legends does not exist on linux. I don't really play it but probably I'll will someday at least once.

Is there any easy reliable way to find older ThinkPads NiB? Like T60s, T400s, X200s, that era stuff.

Thanks!
>>
Got a T430. Fan is emitting a very high-frequency whine when it gets spinning. Is this to be expected or should I look into replacing it? I'm on the latest BIOS version.

Anyone know if I did good? $133.

LoL is not worth your time. In fact, any moba is not worth your time. Seriously, play something laid back, or something you can have fun with.
After all, it is just a game.

not bad deal... shipping kills it being a very good deal. i bought one 9 months ago for $150 and just sold it for $195

Listen to this guy >>51827771
LoL is a terrible, repetitive game of rock paper scissors just like every other moba. But if you're desperate to play that kind of degeneracy, it works under WINE/PlayOnLinux.

jeezus, nevermind.

I really wanna buy a thinkpad, probably a t420 or x220, but I'm worried that I've been spoiled by my desktop with great specs. If I'm used to a really nice computer will a thinkpad be more of a burden than its worth and not fun to use?
>>
>>51828655
depends on what you use it for, if you want to game you'll be disappointed, if you want to use it for Chinese cartoons, homework, shitposting, programming and things like that you'll be fine

Something a bit cheaper.

Are there major differences in speed between the x60t and x61t? Curently have a x60t and wanted to know if a 50$ x61t would be an upgrade? I will be transplanting my sxga+ display assembly from my x60t because the x61t i'm looking at is a non-sxga model.
