If you work in construction you're probably a big guy with big wrists (inb4 bitchwrist skellies shrieking MUH GENETICS), unless of course you're some pencil pusher dweeb like an architect. A fully digital G-Shock is your best bet for those conditions since it has no moving parts, but if you are big-wristed and want some bling consider a Vostok Amphibia with the 090 case. But don't get it if you work with high-vibration tools like hammer drills and demo hammers, the shock will kill a mechanical watch pretty fast.
>>51793431
>Such value.
I would say it's way much useful than the lume most mechanical watches have that slop glowing in the dark after two minutes.
>Also, ugly af
He asked about the thinkpad of watches. Funcion over form.
>>51793527
You're not wrong anon; but compared to a chunky g-shock, it's less appealing aesthetically. I regularly use a G-Shock when I have to visit the site; you can smash concrete with it.
I don't get the $500+ g-shocks tho. Why do they exist...

you might aswell call the Patek Grandmaster Chime a haute horlogerie Diesel watch if that's the way you wanna go.
>>51795907
>>51796022
Diesel is a big dogshit fashion brand marketing to faggots who want to be 'hard' or tough, but at the same time want to spend a lot of cash on their wardrobe. If you but enough pairs of 200 dollar jeans one of the sales associates may comp you one of their dogshit 60mm watches that was made big specifically to be big.
Greubel Forsey is an obscene luxury brand marketing based off of exclusivity and implementing some of the most accurate mechanical movements in watches ever made to date. They do crazy things like making sapphire crystals with domed bubbled in them that probably costs thousands and thousands of dollars to make, then they turn around and charge tens of thousands for.
While both have their downsides or questionable marks, Gruebel Forsey actually is a watch manufacturer, and is making watches of some unique merit in terms of mechanical complication and or accuracy. And while their business model and price largely means it's relegated to be toys of the rich, often probably people who have zero appreciation for any of the good qualities the watch actually has, the fact is that at least it vaguely does have some good qualities. Deisel on the other hand is trash for trash and is not worth a damn to start with.

>>51796896
What mid-to-high range movements are there that are highly serviceable and can take abuse? To me it really only seems like the ETA 2824 and derivatives, the Valjoux 7750, the Rolex 3135 and the Seiko 6R15. Everything else is just pointless.
>>51797458
Seiyajapan
>>51798003
There's also the Lemania 5100 (if you can find it), Eta/Peseux 7001, ETA 2801, ETA 2892, and a few others I can't remember at the moment.
How serviceable are the 6R15s? I know they are tough, but I'm not sure about parts availability.
>>51798302
Seiko is known for being pretty questionable with parts but I assume the 6R is going to be in production for a long time now that they've made this whole family of similar movements. I wonder how many parts are interchangeable with 7S parts too, since they're so closely related. I wonder if 7S parts could be adapted to fit if necessary a long time from now when all of these Seiko movements are long out of production, since that movement is so much more common.

>>51797161
They're both PVD, mate.
alright guys I've royally fucked up.
I'm a complete idiot, I know.
I got my first watch as a present from my uncle tonight. It was a cheap Aliexpress Rodina automatic watch.
I wound the thing up and it was working fine, but the time was incorrect, so I tried to set the time while the seconds hand was still moving. I don't know if I provided too much resistance or what, but after I set it, the seconds hand no longer moves.
I can see the mainspring is still coiling from the automatic movement, but it isn't winding the watch anymore- that is, no gears are moving at all.
1) Is this something I can fix myself without replacing parts?
2) How much would it cost if I needed to replace parts?
Once again, I know, I'm a retard.
>>51799749
>I can see the mainspring is still coiling from the automatic movement, but it isn't winding the watch anymore- that is, no gears are moving at all.
I don't understand exactly what you're saying and I don't think you know enough to explain it
>>51799852
Okay let me put it this way
If you were to physically block the seconds hand from turning while the watch is running, what is the most likely part to break? Because chances are I broke that
>>51799875
Are you sure the watch is actually running sans second hand?
>>51799987
No, that's the problem- I know for sure it isn't running at all. Sorry if I didn't make that clear
>>51800119
Okay. If you pull the crown out and reset it that doesn't help, and if you pull the crown out can you easily adjust the time? If you are looking at the crown from the side with the dial up you'll be turning the crown clockwise to adjust time.
>>51799749
>I tried to set the time while the seconds hand was still moving.
How the hell else would you set the time? Sounds more like the movement was fucked to begin with, that's pretty common with Seagull and their horrible chink QC.
>>51800189
Yes, I can easily adjust the time if I do that.
>>51800189
I should also note that if I try and wind the crown normally, I feel immediate resistance from the main spring before even completing half a turn.
>>51800268
So if you look at the back and twist the watch you'll see the balance wheel freely oscillate but then quickly slow down, right?
>>51800301
The balance wheel is not freely oscillating at all.
>>51800423
and are you able to tell why? For instance is it caught on something, or is the pallet jewel in the pallet fork and the geartrain is just locked?
>>51800444
I do not have the tools available right now to open the back yet so I can't say for sure. From the looks of it though, it seems like the entire pallet jewel/fork/geartrain are locked.
>>51800444
ok well I don't know if you're a magic man or what, but the watch is running perfectly now.... I haven't done shit to it.
>>51800682

Sometimes you need a watch that can crush diamonds on the ocean floor
So since the SKX007 is en route, what straps should i gather for it?
I got one of these super comfy sectime natos and a solid link jubilee bracelet. Any other ideas?
>>51802052
You boil the rubber strap, one or two natos with that is more than enough. I'd stick with something + black generally.
>>51802118
I kinda dislike rubber straps, and the Z22 is not exception.

People here don't know shit about watches i doubt anyone would bother stealing mines with the cheapass looking NATO straps when fashion watches over 55mm are much more appealing to pretty much everyone here.

Does Seiko still make any (good looking) autochronos?
>>51803080
No.
I miss bullheads so much
>>51803089
Why did they give up on them though? Is it because they're niche compared to quartz chronos and didn't think it was worth the effort to try and compete against all the V7750 the swiss dump on the market?
NATOs: great but can easily look like shit on e.g. a rolex submariner 16610 or subC (or anything that copies those cases).
Your watch should be quite thin and sit close to the wrist to look good on a NATO
>>51803238
I disagree, NATOs look great on thicker cases too, like the Vostok ones
>>51803125
The bullhead is a retro design, but I really don't know why it ever went away.
There's not anything much to it.
Rotate the movement 90 degrees, new day/date wheels and reset the 0 for the dials.
just ordered this set for muh Seiko 5S to have a few moods.

>>51803432

Where'd you order it?
Cheapestnatostraps is p much a scam unless you get the premium ones.
Literally chink $1.5 natos with huge markup otherwise.
Get 10 chink natos for like $12 off ali with hand picked colours / patterns instead.
>>51803468
Whats the difference between the regular NATOs and the premium ones that they have anyway?
>>51803494
Not sure since I've only had chink and their regular ones.
Someone else on here said the premium ones are nice and comparable to Crown & Buckle.
I guess Maratac is still king of natos but I'm not paying that much unless I have a proper watch for it to go on.
>>51803468
cheap chink straps for a cheap jap watch.
I guess I overpaid from cheapestnatostraps then
I'm not too worried about it. but I would like to know where to get "good" Nato's at, I've heard good things about Wristcandyclub but they don't have the widest selection and they seem fairly steep.
>>51803540
>>51803781
dunk it in coffee
>>51803125
Mostly because of the major design flaw in the 6138 and 6139.
>>51803432
I have so many god damn straps for mine and i still couldn't decide which one to wear.
So I just utterly destroyed my watch.
Kept it for a dive in a strong current area, got taken away, landed on a stone wall, watch fucking exploded. If you still believe the meme that "diving watches" are fit for diving, well no they're not, because the rest of my gear was completely unaffected.
What are good and affordable mechanical watches with day/date that don't look like complete shit?
>>51799669
Seiyajapan emailed me last night saying they were in stock again but they sold out in about 15 minutes
>>51803942
Get any DD homage in stainless and then put it on a decent leather strap.
Or just get just about any Seiko 5 that's considerably higher quality for about the same as the inflated bagel prices.
>>51803832
>>51803942
I don't think that most dive watches are designed to be smashed into rocky walls. Even if the watch itself doesn't impact.
Especially say an SKX007 or that level of diver, you might expect a Squale to hold up better or other higher end models from various brands.
Orient and Seiko make plenty of affordable watches and they have styles for pretty much anyone.

>>51804245

>>51804286

>>51804277

>>51804339
it looks like it's coarsely ground into the glass the way it seems to cover the indexes as well as the watch face
Bulova 98B245
Good/bad/thoughts?
>>51804346
Yeah it has sapphire. Titanium is pretty much strictly inferior for watches, in my opinion. You'll probably scratch up your watch a lot in normal use, but you probably won't subject it to really strong impacts. So then why trade stainless for titanium which is stronger but less hard? The only real advantage is that titanium is lighter but that seems pretty silly on an object that weighs maybe a few hundred grams.
>>51804102
>>51804246
Smashing your watch against a rock is part of things that can happen during a dive. Which is why I was hinting at the fact that "divers" aren't meant to be taken for a dive contrary to what plenty retards around here like to claim.
They're nothing more than dress watches meant to be worn in cocktail parties, and that appeal to people that won't ever dive in their life.
Still, I hate everything Seiko and Orient makes right now, I'll have to look elsewhere. Why are modern designs so shit?

Although I'm almost certain you're just another shitty baiter ruseman.
>>51804415
because they just are. I would agree that most dive watches are not fit for real diving. Particularly the entry level ones and perhaps ones from luxury brands.
I don't want a dive watch to dive, I want it to look nice and be able to swim or whatever.
why don't you look at vintage watches for looks?
>>51804528
>>51804484
Oops, you're a different anon, sry, my brain is tired.
>>51804401
Why can Citizen just not figure out watch design language? It's like listening to some e try and speak English who learned it phonetically and doesn't understand how to pronounce it or what any of it means.
>>51804648
They should just re-use some older designs.
>>51804648
I think Citizen is still desperately in need of someone to come in and trash all their awful designs and come up with something good like that Seiko guy in the 60s/70s who realized their designs were fucking awful and came up with the Grammar of Design style instead. Seiko before that was perfectly capable of making good watches but they were all generic and uninspired and ugly. Citizen today makes perfectly good watches too but most of their designs are Macy's garbage and even the ones that come close to being ok always without exception have some retarded shit thrown in that ruins everything.

>>51804472
A rather classic Seiko "diver" with domed sapphire I've had for some time. Can't remember the exact reference, and I left it on the boat.
>>51804484
>So what the hell are divers supposed to use, then? I bet you any impact that would smash a decent watch would also smash a much bulkier diving computer.
I had a Suunto Zoop next to it, which actually took the hit full force. I think I added another slight scratch to the protective plastic glass, but it didn't seem to care much, and it has surely seen much, much worse. Neither did the tank, strap, manometer, nor half the shit I wore on me.
Diving gear is meant to be tough as fuck, and that impact with a rock wall is pretty much what you should subject all your gear to before diving with it. Because your life depends on it. Dive watches are laughable on that aspect.
>>51804529
>why don't you look at vintage watches for looks?
Well that's what I'm doing, my old one was fine, wish I could get another. Still I'm eyeing some nice Citizen stuff, albeit it's all quartz ecodrive.
>>51805032
The only diver Seiko makes with sapphire is a Grand Seiko for this exact reason, so it was either an aftermarket crystal or you're full of shit.
>>51805032
Smashing an old dive watch is no indication of the capabilities of a modern one.
>>51802704
>in the mail
>not pic of your actual watch
post it fgt
>>51805091
>The only diver Seiko makes with sapphire is a Grand Seiko
You should use Google someday anon, you might learn there are things beyond what you think you know, because Seiko does make divers with sapphire, I've seen more than a couple while looking for another watch, and mine isn't exactly a current model because I'm not seeing it anywhere now.
>>51805140
I'm pretty sure the capabilities of steel and sapphire haven't changed. I often dive with a shitty Casio though, and while badly scratched (albeit scratches are invisible underwater), it survived the rock smashing test so far.
Most diving computers have a two layer screen protector, with the exposed one recommended to replace as soon as it shows weaknesses. This seems to be what's needed for diving gear, and I know even my diving Casio will die some day.
>>51805315
>I'm pretty sure the capabilities of steel and sapphire haven't changed.
Funnily enough, yes they have. Forging versus casting, milling, purity and composition of the steels themselves have changed. What was once prohibitively expensive is now commonplace. The same applies to the crystals.
A good example is with casting. If you look at older or cheap castings, you'll see a lot of internal voids. A modern forged case will be much stronger.

Good luck

Do it to honor his memory. Too bad I didn't inherit his cool Oysterdate when he died.

Ya did good anon.
could someone post the price/feature info-graphic
it would be appreciated <3
>>51805996
And I had an OCD tantrum when I got sent a single winding stem extension in an envelope.
Hey what time of year do watch companies usually announce new stuff, and when does new stuff typically hit the market?
I'm specifically interested in Omega.
>>51806426
I think the annual Baselworld, whenever that is.
>>51805826
>H-hope I'll learn enough to give advice soon, until then w-wish me ganbatte, /wt/.
W-what? I've been in hospital for a while, something happened to watchmakeranon? But I'm sure you'll try your best to become a good watchmaker, keep up on it anon!
also, >tfw waiting on my watch to come by mail
>>51806302
>>51806426
Annually with some things at SIHH in january and Baselworld (main event) in march.
Since Omega is one of the brands that nearly purely cares about people buying shit, they push out something for both of these, every year.
>>51806426
That version of the Speedy 57 is terrible, and only because of the /fa/-tier black on black hands. Pic related, the default version looks so much better, with the only real difference being the color of the hands.
Are shinola watches any good? I really like them and am considering getting one
>>51806496
is there a difference in the steinhart ocean1 and the vintage one besides color?

Righto.
>>51806626
Yeah, the black-on-black looks good but is garbage for actual use.
>>51806448
>>51806504
Thanks.
I feel weird looking at Omegas in a way because I'm not their intended customer: I'm actually interested in the antimagnetic properties of their watches, not just as a marketing gimmick.
>>51806641
It's just chinkshit put together in one of the shittiest cities in the country, avoid.
>>51806643
Looks like the case is more like vintage a Rolex, for example no crown guards.
>>51806643
Not to my understanding
>>51806643
>regular not domed
eh fuck it then maybe an orbis
>>51806674
>antimagnetic properties
Hey, same here. I look at the Aqua Terra because it's the cheapest one that has the 85xx movement, along with not being too thick.
>>51806641
as far as fashion accessories go they're alright i guess, although not cheap.
they're also not as american as they want to appear, if that matters to you.
as far as watches go, they're a rip off. they have absolutely no interest to the watch enthusiast.
that being said, if you really like the design and can afford it, go for it. if you care about what's inside your watch and how it's made, don't.
>>51806674
>>51806720
Look at Rolex Milgauss, used and new.
>>51806674
What about the super sexy GS antimagetics?
>>51806759
I have been. Used Milgauss is still way over a new Aqua Terra. The Aqua Terra is on sale for $4k right now.
Also to note: the Milgauss is no longer the only antimagnetic Rolex. Any of the Rolex watches with a movement with their Parachrom blue balance spring will also be antimagnetic. Rolex just doesn't shout about it like Omega. Unfortunately all of these watches are more expensive than the Aqua Terra.
>>51806757
>they're also not as american as they want to appear, if that matters to you.
Yuropoor here, when someone mentions American style watches I think of trench watch numerals, cathedral hands, Accutrons, Elgin, 'Nam field watches and Timex.
>>51806340
Did they at least write "do not bend" on the package?
>>51806809
Costs more than the Aqua Terra (unless I can find it on sale) for significantly less antimagnetism. I'll look for used/on-sale versions though, thanks.
>>51806831
No, but sometimes I get half a cubic meter of foam with ten springbars hidden in the middle as a surprise.
>>51806842
Would you really need the amount of anti-magnetism the AT has? Even the milgauss is 'only' resistant to 1000 gauss (hence it's name). Those GS's are about the same as the milgauss.
>>51793124
Where is the previous thread OP you dumb fuck
>>51806917
The newer Milgauss (and other Rolex watches with the new Parachrom Blue springs) are most certainly resistant to much higher than 1000 Gauss, I haven't been able to find any specification.
I have researched this a bit, it takes a good amount of piecing together to come up with an overall picture. From what I have seen, there are two tiers of antimagnetic watch:
Those with much higher than 1k Gauss:
Antimagnetic Omegas with the 8400, 8500, 8508 calibers.
Any Rolex with with the new Parachrom Blue springs.
The legendary IWCs from the 70's.
Then, the still okay but less antimagnetic watches:
Old Milgauss
Old Omega Railmaster
Some Grand Seikos
Some IWC
Some Sinn, Damasko, etc.
I haven't measured the fringe fields of all of the magnets I work with, but I'd feel much more confident with more than 0.1 Tesla field protection.
>>51805996
I have gotten single mechanical pencils with no packaging in boxes that big.
One alternative for antimagnetic watches are Damaskos. The Damasko watches have 80,000 A/M resistance, nickel-free exceptionally hard cases, and sapphire crystals. You have to pay a bit more for the in-house movements, but if you don't mind the ETA 2836-2 you can save some cash.
>>51806917
1000 gauss is less than even a little neodymium magnet, 15,000 gauss is at least at the low end of an MRI machine. Still, no watch is enough to get near a full-strength MRI machine and nowhere close to what scientific equipment puts out. Not that you would ever be allowed to bring something metal anywhere near any strong magnetic device no matter how much you assure everyone that your very expensive watch is nonmagnetic. I think the utility of this whole antimagnetic thing is kind of questionable.
>>51807126
I remember reading they were made for folks working in radio heavy environments, rather than MRIs.
Maybe an all plastic swatch is the way to go for those.
