a guy i work with who's the head of IT strongly believes that in the next 5-10 years we will be charged for opening documents eg. £0.01 to open a PDF on your computer, and that all computing seems to be moving in this direction.

How feasible do you think this is?
>>
>>51793067
>charged for opening documents
literally impossible if you're using your own software, and chances are GNU/linux wouldn't even try this
>>
>>51793067
no way
impossible to enforce. even if one company tried doing this, people would just stop using their shit.
>>
I-I wasn't masturbating! I s-swear!
>>
>>51793083

i would assume he means for the average w10 user/business.

his argument against the idea that people wouldn't upgrade to w10 or whatever it ends up being was that if they were not on a system which was still being supported (eg. XP) that if they got hacked or something, banks would not listen to them for a second.

are you literally 12

The next logical step is netbooting OS and all storage and programs on the cloud. You can't charge people for files until you control the ability to read them.

The costs of doing that transactions are probably already higher than that. Unless we find a reliable way to do Micro-transactions this won't happen.

He turns PCs on and off for a living. What do you expect? It's retarded speculation coming from someone who isnt a serious software developer.
>>
>>51793067
In the future there will be no documents. Instead there will be a web service to view documents, and you have to cgo to the companies web site and run the js app to view the document. Then the company could charge you per document viewing, or do a monthly fee or something.

You can already rent software for $0.02 per hour and Amazon has made a huge business out of it.

Is it really that hard to imagine Windows 11 doing accounting on how often or how long you look at apps, and charging you accordingly?

Her forced bi clips are the best desu senpai.

Maybe if Bitcoin takes over.

Lets assume this head of IT (Who must've slept with fucking everyone) is correct, everyone would just use a previous generation product.

Let's go back to reality; get him fired.
>>
>>51793359
In a way it already has. Take google docs for example and the stupidity of some people on /g/ saying that's all you need.
>>
>head of IT
So he's a paper pusher. I wouldn't take anything he says that's technical serious. I worked with a guy who was the supervisor of help desk and couldn't even explain what fucking DHCP was.
>>
>>51793672

>previous generation product

until support stops for said product.

>>51793374
I would rather be autistic than 12. You can stop being autistic whenever you like, but you will be 12 forever.

printing requires an industry behind it to get the raw materials to make paper and ink

the cost is in those things, not the printing itself

I work IT at a law firm and one of the programs we use you have to buy tokens, and viewing a form/printing a form uses a token. Idk if they have any proprietary information, or if it's just convenient the way they present it but if people can find a way to monetize something they will. There will still be places like 4chan, but for like an online textbook rental, maybe it'll be better to just rent your page with your homework questions for $.05 than the whole book for $20. doesn't seem so farfetched with business documents...
>>
>>51793067
It's like big companies are trying to create new reasons for people to pirate shit.
>>
>>51798308
The key point is, what are they charging people for? Because if they don't own the work, charging people for it without the owner getting a cut, or giving permission, could cause them a world of legal shit.

And in the case where they don't own the rights to the media being provided, then free providers WILL step in strictly out of spite. The Internet Archive would probably be all over it.

Fucking retarded.

Seems about right.

It is the logical next step of the corporate model of software as a service.

Right now everything is being put online like google docs, or in the app store like apple and microsoft.

So what they want to do is have all your information and software held and running on their servers, charging you to access your own stuff.

Next they'll outsource the programs and storage distributed style to the users yet still charge to use their software that lets you use your software.

Their business model is evolving into ransomware.

Damn corporate parasites, abolish private (not personal) property!
>>
>>51793067
If that ever were to happen, I would compile my own Linux kernel and use LibreOffice even if I have to learn programming myself.

I will take these software and shove it up their tight assholes of these business executives who keep choking the authority of the end user and simply forcing us to purchase software even though its only renting.

Fuck these people. Fuck you OP if you are part of this problem.
