I'd be using this device for university, so that's why I didn't really want to go for a tablet. I'm typing this on an old laptop with a single core Celeron 540 1.86ghz and 1GB RAM. You can understand now why I'm looking to upgrade before university starts. This $515(after tax) has to go towards my main, portable computer that will be used for 4+ years as I don't have any money.

Typically, when I recommend phones and tablets, I say to either buy a Nexus or buy Apple, because a device is only as good as its support. My recommendation to you is similar: buy a Mac, or buy a Surface.
The Surface Pro starts at $900ish, but the smaller Surface starts at $500. Macbook Airs start around $800, but I would avoid those models like the plague. Don't EVER buy the 11" MBA, and don't settle for less than 8GB RAM in a Mac.

Budget $45 for a new 9-cell battery.
Laptops don't really start getting actually good until you hit ~$800-$900. You can get sweet features that look great until you get 9 months in and it starts falling to shit because they compromised on build quality.
If you need to do fancy ass shit like rendering or FEA or whatever they'll have computer labs, but honestly you sound pretty dumb so all you need is a web browser and a word processor.
IN CONCLUSION: buy two cheap thinkpads so this way when Jamal steals your backpack/your hard drive crashes/backlight dies the night your essay's due you can still complete it without failing.

It's slightly more annoying in some situations when you're trying to use it *exactly* as you'd use a laptop, but it's a lot less annoying to use than a laptop -- especially the kind of laptop you get for $500 -- in other situations, like being crammed into the backseat of a car or standing/walking around.
The important thing to remember here is that we're not comparing it to all laptops, we're comparing it to the kind of laptop you'd reasonably be able to get for $500. It compares pretty favorably against those.
