Tl,Dr my son has been barely scratching the surface of basic programming, what can I do to help him progress outside of encouraging it, and teaching him the occasional trick.
Start by making programing challenges, then see the results and give him advice on things to improve and learn.
Get him an audrino or RPi for christmas.

If he's at or near that rebellious age or you are normally somewhat distant you might want to simply show off some things your working on to him to strike up a conversation, don't push anything or else it will be your hobby, not his. People in this thread saying to buy him this or that or to get him to start learning/doing x/y/z thing don't understand how the majority of kids act and think. Depending on his age, if you force him into things he's not ready to do or doesn't want to do then he'll resent both you and the hobby for it. If you want to teach him then ask first. Don't just go, "Oh you like programming? Here come do this!" and force something on him. Communication is key.
For now just tell him you're a resource if he needs it.
