My ssd just arrived. I did a quick speed test and it wrote 20gb in just a couple of seconds. Installed OS and a few programs and it's already at 100gb on my first day of ownership.

Ay this rate 150TB seems rather low.
I don't want my meme ssd to wear out ;_;

What do?
>>
you only need a 120gb ssd, for the rest use regular hdd
>>
>>51780164
probably should learn to spellcheck before posting your thread, you stupid faggot.
>>
>>51780164
What part about it didn't work though?

What do you mean wear out? You will be able to write to it for longer than an HDD will live anyway.
>>
>>51780188
Edgy as fuck nigger.
>>
>>51780184

120GB is too small for gaymes and programs.

>>51780188

No bully pls
>>
>>51780164
I use this SSD. It's pretty fuckin' good.
>>
>>51780213
install games and programs on regular hdd. SSD is for OS only.
>>
>>51780188

>perfect grammar post
>>
>>51780231

this is bullshit /g/ meme faggotry.

install EVERYTHING on SSD. use HDD for video and photos.
>>
>>51780231
But wouldn't you want it all to just work better?
>>
>>51780281

there are people here who intentionally run shit hardware and shit OS, 'working better' is a hard concept for them.
>>
>>51780273
this must be pasta. This is pasta, r-right?
>>
>>51780164
The usage pattern you observed on the first day isn't representative of the usage you are going to subject your drive to daily in the next years.

Why does my new Samsung SSD make a whine?

I have an 840 evo, I've owned it for 2 years now.
It is at 10TB writes and is still 100% health.

SSDs wearing out if you use them at all is the meme.
>>
>>51780367

Older SSD used to wear out relatively fast. But newer models typically last longer than the hardware they are put in.
>>
>>51780164
disable page file on SSD, put it on a HDD if you even need it.
don't defrag the SSD

enjoy 10+ years of high speed ownership
>>
SSD's are disposable tech. Standard HDD's last fucking decades.

Sad thing is you have no idea when it's gonna fail, it depends on how much you use it. So yes, use it for your OS only. Keep files you actually care about (personal media, savegames maybe) on a good ol' HDD.
>>
>>51780367

this. anybody can google the benchmarks where the guy wrote like fucking petabytes of data before his lot of them croaked.

my boot ssd is a 120 gig intel 520 which launched in Q1 2012. still going strong with no issues whatsoever.
>>
>>51780415
Doesn't putting page file on hdd prevent it from spinning down though?
>>
>>51780319
This must be bait. This is bait, r-right?

Of course I'm going to use the ssd for all my programs and games. All of my programming projects are on there as well.
I am also using it as a scratch disk in Photoshop and After Effect as well.

HDD is for data that is written/read sequentially. Downloads in general, videos, music and other large files.
>>
>>51780416
>SSD's are disposable tech. Standard HDD's last fucking decades.

Do you even mechanical wear ?
>>
>>51780164
>What do?

Just don't re-install your computer every day.
>>
>>51780450
I have this ancient Maxtor 512 MB HDD somewhere since the late 90's. It still werks.
>>
Ssd are for os and a few things on boot or a fave game
>>
>>51780540
>It still werks.
I'm sure it's been spinning all this time.
>>
>>51780570
earlier this year I used it to see if it had any of my custom Starcraft maps. It was a bit slow for 2015 standards, but readable.
>>
>>51780621
Of course it's readable if it was sitting unused on a shelf.
>>
>>51780642
Inside a PC, and I used it for a good 6 years before putting it to rest (still using it from time to time, maybe 4 times a year for a whole day). SSD's barely last 4 years before running out of R/W uses.
>>
>>51780164
do you plan on reinstalling your OS and all your programs every day OP? also 830 Pro has write endurance in the PETABYTE range
>>
>>51780686
my ssd is at 3 1/2 years of daily use with no sign of errors

samsung 830 256gb
>>
A 256gb ssd and a 4tb hard drive is great for most just cases.
>>
>>51780686
do people say this shit from like experience or just talking out of their asses?
why would you talk shit out of your ass?
>>
>>51780164
>being this paranoid about a modern ssd
>>
>>51780548
or you could not be a poorfag, and get an ssd bigger than60 or 120 gigs
>>
>>51780813
It is barely possible to have experience with that. modern SSDs havent been around long enough to run out of writes.
>>
I just bought a 1 terabyte SSD over black Friday for $240.

No regrets.
>>
>>51780854
which means they're talking out of their ass.
"SSDs barely last 4 years before running out of R/W"
meanwhile everything points to the contrary, and this guy never owned an SSD in his life.

what the fuck /g/.
>>
>>51780273
I run all my games and OS crap on SSD's, NAS for media and documents.
>>
What's this about the page file?
>>
Run your games from the SSD. You only need a couple installed at any one time. When you are done with a game uninstall it and stop hoarding for no reason.
>>
>>51780938
Leave your swap file on your SSD alone. Modern SSD's have shitloads of write cycles. More than you will probably ever use anyhow.
>>
>>51780164
It'll last for longer than you think. The 840 evo only started getting bad nand after 200TB, so I expect the 850 to be better.

>>
>>51780428
Only problem is if they suddenly die like Linus' setup did while he was working on linux. Either way, as long as you keep some backups, you'll be good.
