I'm planning on putting either ESXi or XenServer on my daily PC, I want to have my daily OS (probably Fedora Workstation) on a VM, Windows 10 (for games and some programs) on a different VM that's usually off, and have a firewall like PfSense in a VM using my physical quad gigabit Ethernet ports, and a virtual network storage server.

Are there any major problems I could run in to? I'm planning on using PCI passthrough on my GPUs to use Fedora or Windows for games.

Also, are there any other servers/VMs that I could have running? I was thinking about some sort of source control server, one of the reasons I want to do this is bacause of how often I reformat and lose code.

My hardware:
-1x 8 core/16 thread Xeon E5-2670 (Will upgrade to two if one is somehow not enough)
-32 GB DDR3 ECC RAM (Will upgrade to 64 eventually)
-Supermicro X9DRE
-HX1050
-HD 7970
I'll be getting an NVidia card for messing with CUDA some time soon

Even if so they are not too bad.
Much cheaper than buying a new i5

Be that as it may, current gen i5s have iommu by default and can overclock higher than a xeon.

So what. I can get 2 of them with 8 cores each for cheaper equal to a good i5

Oh shit, I didn't realise the K parts have vT-d unlocked now.
Well done Intel, you reverted the decision that forced me to buy AMD recently

Might have overex'd a little but its still a fairly valid point.

Only the skylake K parts have vT-d unlocked, which is what you need for IOMMU and VGA-Passthrough

You're losing a lot of performance by going for the xeon, but you said you'd get two so this could be what you're looking for

Why else are you planning on running a bare-metal hypervisor?

Games can run on consumer PC's/Consoles.
Waste of good parts.
>>
>>51780160
IOMMU is included in the VT-d instruction set.
It allows the CPU to pass hardware "directly" to a virtual machine. Without it, you have to run a compatibility layer like spice, which completely wrecks your performance.
>>
>>51780192
Who said anything about a virtual machines.
Rendering cluster nodes always use linux.
>>
>>51780179

Comsumer hardware can now do server stuff, He's using an i7-6700k to run a game in a VM, while Linux is still free to compile code or whatever

off topic but I kinda wanna buy a dildo but I live at home with my parents and I'm sure that the mailman or my mom would find out if I got it from amazon.

Okay well, what If my mom or her spouse asks what it is? I don't have a lock on my door
>>
>>51779716
Uh yeah, there' the big issue of you needing to use fucking VNC (or whatever their shit console is based on) from another host to view a GUI with ESXi, so your plan is fucked from the beginning. You should probably look at kvm instead, since that will actually do what you want.
>>
>>51780355
Okay, can you organize to send it to a local post office?
If I'm ordering something particularly important or valuable, i won't get it sent to my house for security concerns. I go to my local post office and organize for them to receive it and notify my when it arrives.
>>

Yes, probably.

I'd still be embarrassed lol, I actually thought about sending it to my friend's house (since he's also bisexual).

You don't have to tell the post guys what is in the box. You can say it's a set of these or something.
>>
>>51780376
Can I not just use the client from inside one of the VMs?
>>
>>51780482
>You don't have to tell the post guys what is in the box. You can say it's a set of these or something.

Oh, so they won't know what's in it just because they're scanning it or some shit?
>>
>>51780484
You "can", through VNC or something.
A better idea is to get a shitty second GPU and a KVM switch to switch your monitor/mouse/keyboard between the host OS and guest OS
>>
>>51780502
...
The only people that scan post are the authorities, and I can guarantee you they will scan hundreds of dildoes a week. They won't give a fuck.

Why not synergy?

Pic related is all ESXi will output to your display after you install it. If you install ESXi, you need a second computer to do anything with it.
>>
>>51780523
Because that's a multimonitor solution, and basically just a fancy VNC.
If you break a virtual network interface configuring pfsense or some shit (which is highly fucking likely), you won't be able to do shit with synergy.

I know it does that, I was wondering if I could pass a GPU to a VM and get the VM's video output from the card so I could use it like a normal PC

Iunno, bought a dildo from Amazon when I was 15 or 16, came in box with nothing on it.
If they ask what it is run to your room, open it, run back, and throw the dildo at their faces.

nigga, you're too funny

Post office employees have no idea what's in a package btw. I would suggest getting like 8 inches at least, it will be more worthwhile in the end.
>>
>>51780614
It might work, but you better keep a spare PC on hand in case you ever shut down that Windows host and no longer have a way to turn it back on because you left vSphere on it.
>>
>>51780614
i think you would require 2 GPU's
You can use Intel HD graphics for the host, and pass the GPU to the VM, but you would need a skylake, or top of the line 5XXX series CPU's if you want overclocking AND VT-d

Okay, I'll definitely get something larger and I;ll make sure it's a silicon build.
