VMware or Virtualbox?

vmware is slow, buggy, cancerous shit

both

virtualbox for anything running locally, esxi for dedicated vmhost

qemu

VMware Workstation is not a bad product and it's a fair bit quicker than VirtualBox. Though I'm not quite sure it is worth its price tag.

Hyper-V is quite polished and easy to use. It's free on some editions of Windows too.

What are you trying to do?
>>
>>51779291
Nothing complicated. Want to virtualize some Linux and Windows guests. I can install Hyper-V but don't know a lot about it I'm pretty sure its for server deployments?
>>
Do you run Windows/OSX and require good graphics acceleration?
>VMware

Do you run Windows/OSX and not require good graphics acceleration?
>VBox

Do you run Linux?
>Qemu \w KVM + spice

I use Hyper-V for all of my virtual machines, even local ones. Its very good for anything, not just server stuff.

Since its a type 1 its a little faster. It does lack drag and drop, copy/paste etc, but I don't really use that stuff anyway. I typically use shares etc.

VMware feels a lot more polished and versatile than VB did the last time I used it. Other than feeling like plebeian garbage, VB won't let me install an operating system to a physical drive without some really autistic mucking around with the configuration, which just really turns me off of it.

>>51779575
Don't know about 7 and 8, but it ships with 10 as an option you can install from the control panel. I haven't used it much either, but it sounds nice.

Which version of VMWare do you use? Workstation looks nice but lol paying
>>

Virtual box is dogshit.

It is slow as fucking hell, it is buggy, it is worthless. VMware has excellent performance near native in some cases [1]. If you are on a laptop, Virtualbox is not even an option, since it eats through your battery, practically cutting it in half.

Why would the benchmarks being on a Mac make a large difference? On Linux my experience has been eerily similar. Anyone that's used VMware will know that Virtualbox is poorly performing garbage
>>
>>51780369
Because of OS X typically having worse performance than other operating systems.

VMware, learn some thing that might get you a job. Also Vbox is on its way out.

Every time I try VMware something goes wrong. Using virtualbox, everything juzt werks.

Also, VMware likes to force down your throat the "great news" of their commercial products. Screw that.
>>
>>51780490
I tried VMware on Linux. It was just downright terrible. I had to download all kinds of shit from their website, muck about in config files just to get it functioning. Virtualbox was much more straightforward.

On a mac however VMware takes the cake - it's so easy to setup, battery life and performance is fucking great (I was able to play EUIV without it shitting the bed). Meanwhile Virtualbox is a turd that can barely run a VN without crashing.
>>
>>51779060
Vmware. Sadly, virtualbox may be OS, but it's also absolute dogshit by comparison.

Samefag harder, oracle shill.

OP here trying out Hyper-V. It's really good but is there any reason why it can't connect with the network adapter?
>>
>>51781277
Did you create a virtual switch? IIRC you will likely want an External Virtual Switch so your virtual machine has internet access.
>>
>>51779060
vmware by far

KVM

gnu/linux/xen os master race

Virtualbox or on Linux OpenVZ

If you're on Windows then HYPER-V > All.

Only takes a few minutes to set up an smb share on host and guest if you need to copy shit back and forth.

How does one get to play games with KVM? I am completely unfamiliar with virtualization
>>
>>51786690
pci-passthrough a gpu into a virtual machine.

Also....

Vmware direct downloads:

>>
>>51786721
Do I need special hardware or what are the requirements? I have a SLI setup and I heard that works with pci passthrough
>>
>>51786818
vt-d (or AMD-Vi but all amd cpus have thata these days)
also you're not gonna be crossfiring though kvm, unless you run the linux side through integrated graphics. You're essentially locking the hardware (temporarily) to the VM, allowing it full, native like access.
>>
Whats the best linux type 2 hyper visor? Since I want to run other OS's from my daily machine.

I used to use virtual box. Then later on I got vmware for free from study. Now my license has expired. What else is good?
>>
>>51787152
Alright, but can I use one graphics card for my main linux system and one for pci passthrough exclusively? if so do you have any links to guides?
