I used GIMP for 3 years before I used Photoshop for 3 years.
The GIMP is quite nice as long as you've never tried PS but once you try PS there's no going back (except for colour to alpha, have never found an equivalent for that). That being said, PS still has thoroughly shit brush/pressure support compared to something like SAI but for /gd/ shit PS is usually far faster and more feature filled than the GIMP equivalent.

No the groups usually already has the images in a archive so just download that.

It's just like any other manga series. Chances are scanlators already have them in a rar, so all you have to do is make a folder and put all the images in there for the unarchived version.
Make sure you remove the unnecessary images in the rar/folder, sometimes there is an extra "This scan was done by x!" or "Looking for recruitment" page.
