Looking to pick up a desktop audio setup for my brother as a Christmas gift. Looking for something affordable but with good performance. I'd like to pick up a desktop amp and bookshelves rather than a set of pc speakers.

Is this any good? Is there something better that I should be looking at for around the same price?

Micca B42X @ $89

SMSL SA50 Desktop Amp @ $68

how to connect?
>>
>>51777081

You would just run speaker wire from the amp to the speakers.

>Looking to pick up a desktop audio setup for my brother as a Christmas gift.

NHT SuperZero XU and an amp off Craigslist. Look for Rotel, NAD, Denon.
>>
>>51777069
for new, thats not bad
The smsl gives your brother room to get better speakers if he wants too compared if you got him a shitty lepai
>>
I am thinkig about buying some speakers for my desktop, but first I have a noob question, my pc hasn't 2 audio outputs, how can I connect speakers and headphones?. I don't want to be plugging and unplugging. Do I need an soundcard , and audio interface or something like that? maybe some speakers with headphone output?

I used the heaphone thread pastebin

>Budget
< 200 euros, can be 250 if it is really worth

>Preferred tonal balance
I think I prefer a neutral sound
>Preferred music
jazz and prog rock
>Room
I am in a small room (~3m x 4.5m )
>Past headphones
I have sennheiser amperior, I found them a bit bright for my taste, and Dunu DN 1000

I keep hearing about jbl LSR305, but I don't want to spend that much. I am looking active monitors here : http://www.madridhifi.com/sonido/profesional/monitores-estudio/activos/baratos-primero/ because they have a wide range, for this price I have seen, BEHRINGER MS40, M AUDIO BX5 D2, POWER DYNAMICS PDSM5 , BEHRINGER STUDIO 50USB , Cerwin Vega XD5 , M AUDIO AV42 Monitores STUDIOPHILE.
Are any of those any good?.
>>
>>51777124

I've heard good things about the superzeros but they are $212 a pair rather then 89 a pair. He's my brother but I'm not looking to spend THAT much.
>>
>>51777152
>I think i prefer neutral sound
then look for the speaker for the flattest frequency response. its that simple
>>
OP here, also, if there is anything that offers good sound quality but has a larger driver that would give more bass (he doesn't want a sub) at a similar price, I'd be interested.
>>
>>51777426
no
these are as good as it gets for the price unless you want to get a pair of good speakers for nothing from goodwill
>>
Would the Infinity Primus or Pioneer BS22s be any better for desktop use (as they have larger drivers)? They are about the same price.

Whatever you do get. If you are connecting them to a computer then make sure you get one of these for $25. It's an absolute godsend.

I have literally that exact setup, and I've had no problems with it. To be fair though, I came from shitty logitech speakers, so take that as you will.
>>
>>51778902
I had an issue with a USB connected DAC inside a Pioneer DJ controller causing a groundloop between the PC and speakers. Granted not everyone will experience this issue but it happens. Sometimes just using balanced cables fixes the problem. But not always.
>>
>>51779254

OP here. Already have a hum destroyer on mine. For some reason my case (Fractal R4) was causing a ground loop.
>>
>>51779476
I have that case too. Coincidence?
>>
>>51780062

It is a pretty well-known issue. Honestly, everyone here really talked the R4 up, but I was not really impressed.

bump. Looking for something similar to OP. Would like to spend about 175 total on speakers and amp. Preferably new, as it would be a gift.

whynot buy better amp and better speakers op?

speakers:
http://www.amazon.com/JBL-ES20-Bookshelf-Speaker-Pair/dp/B001AW18K8/ref=sr_1_16?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1449733378&sr=1-16&keywords=jbl

receiver:

>>
>>51783711

I actually meant this model(it's the second choice on that page): Yamaha R-S300BL Stereo Receiver (Black)

but I don't know why I can't link it.
>>
>>51777080
how loud does this get? i was gonna get one as a christmas gift but i wasn't sure how quiet 20 watts would be
>>
>>51782401

Not that SMSL is much better, but Lepais are absolute shit. I hope you don't believe their ratings? You might get 25w at peak for a single frequency, but put any load into it, and you're lucky to get 7-8 watts RMS.

Bookshelves typically have <90db efficiency. Good luck pushing those distortion free at anything higher than 70db with that toy amp.
>>
>>51778017
This. don't even ask /g/ for anything these days, too man Millennials are ruining this place.
>>
>speakers
>made in china

to the /trash/ it belongs.
>>
I went from 30$ Logitech speakers to JBL LSR305 because they have good reviews and get recommended quite often. I'm really happy with them.
>>
>>51784264
does the shitty (but upgrdable) power supply have to do anything with it?
I read multiple reviews stating It didnt get enough juice because the chinkfrauds put some lower amp Psu in the box with the amp.
Talking about the lepai ofc
>>
>>51783743
amplifier section of the receiver is not that good for the price

the jbls are disgusting for $279

you could get these which are one to two tiers better and less expensive:
Cambridge Audio - SX-50
>>
Q acoustic 2020's or 3020's
Wharfedale Diamond (something).
Dali Zensor 1
Some B&W are worth a listen.

The Lepai amp is decent. Does everything fine. Downside is, doesn't have a headphone input. So you'll be stuck plugging your headphones into your PC. Which can be kinda annoying, especially if it's on the other side of the table.

Don't fall for the autism speaker meme.

Computer speakers:
>Buy
>Plug in
>Play

Autism speakers:
>Spend hours looking for a good combination and deals
>Second guess yourself endlessly, look to /g/ for guidance
>Receive autistic advice from /g/
>Buy your speakers, amp and wire online
>Wait weeks for shipping (but hey, it's better than talking to people, right⸮)
>Strip wire and setup, being very careful not to cross the terminals
>Put on your Hatsune Miku FLAC rip
>Wires get crossed anyway and your entire setup fries
>Cry self to sleep
>Get mommy to buy you some Corsair™ SP2500s
>>
>>51784094
The D652 are rated for 87 dB at 1W/1M. The Lepai gets decent sound up until about 3W per channel which easily be more than enough for desktop use.
>>
>>51790006
Yes but it's also a limitation of the D-class design.

They have good distortion up until about 3WPC but it gets real shit real quick after that.
>>
>>51791192
You are thinking of t-class amps, which the lepai is
D-class amps are much better
>>
>>51791532
You're right.

>>51790818

Most of these are only available in the UK.

Americans have Polk, Klipsch, infinity and a lot of other shit.

Forget the amp, and all this shit.

Take some nice JBL sr308 studio. It's gonna be night and day. 8" driver, all i'm saying.

Becarful they sold one at a time not a pair.
>>
>>51781653
make sure to EQ them a little, even noaudiophiles dsp will make them a bit better in your room

>JBL sr308

Except I don't want to spend $500 on a Christmas present.
>>
>>51794712
305 were going for $200/pair and they're literally the same thing, 308 just go a little lower in bass response but that can easily be fixed with a sub later on. with a sub they're both practically identical speakers unless you're for some reason pushing the 305 to their volume limit which is slightly lower than the 308 (still physically painful loudness in a desktop setup)
>>
>>51794780
Thinking of getting the 308's at some point, is the Steinberg UR22 a good choice to go with it? I'd like something physical to control the volume with instead of just software.
>>
>>51794978
Yup.
>>
>>51781522
On the contrary, I researched speakers and amps separately across multiple websites and those hit the price:performance sweet spot for me.
>>
>>51795088
don't respond to blatant shitposters who can't stand the fact that people don't want their shitty lepai with cancerous spring connectors and meme treble/bass control
