Krita is almost better at both, with features like filter layers and great support for color models, while GIMP is basically stuck at RGB24 until the GEGL stuff finally shows up and somebody makes a decent UI for it.

Pinta or Kolourpaint if you want simple image editing, otherwise, you can always use Photoshop CS2 under wine, which works rather well. If you're too fixed in your free software ideals, I honestly can't think of any strong alternative to GIMP...

Clip studio pro. It's better than. Photoshop for what I do. The vectorshit is amazing and just werks. Out of all the illustration programs I didn't pay for, it is the best.

We like our cars fast, our women female(ish) and our software bloated, convoluted, doing everything but not doing any of it well, and of course free as in do as we're fucking told, by our betters. Did anyone try SK1 Project? It seems like it's a vector editor but compared to Inkscape isn't burdened by (svg) standards.
