Phablets are shit edition

Previous: >>51750214

A general thread to collect all of the smartphone threads into one place

Suggestions to this general OP post are appreciated!

!!!!PURCHASING ADVICE GUIDELINES!!!!

When seeking purchasing advice, list your country/carrier, what phones are in your price range, and your budget at minimum

Simply asking for advice without stating your nation/carrier and listing what devices are available to you and also stating budget will likely get no response!

decent sub 5 inch smartphones when? will 2016 the year where the phabletmeme dies?
>>
Should updated Best Customer Service as: HTC, Google and Apple
>>
Finally updating my Moto X pure on marshmallow, feels good considering I just got a nice big MicroSD to load shit on.

>>51773262

Dunno, that's my only regret about the Pure. I hope smaller flagships make a triumphant return soon.
>>
>>51773734
>Dunno, that's my only regret about the Pure.
That phone is beautiful but I can't use a phone that is above 5 inches. I already considered buying an s4 the sizedifference compared to my xperia zr isn't that big.
>>
>>51773768
>but I can't use a phone that is above 5 inches.
Look at the actual size of the phone, not the screen size. Plenty of older 4.5" phones are actually larger than 5" phones today.
>>
>Europe
>Budget: Between 150€~350€
>Use: Music, browsing, little to no games
>What i want: Good enough battery, root, enough internal storage or MicroSD, Android 5 / 6
Is there anything good?
>>
>>51774017
yeah but the screensize in general is an indicator for how big the phone. That's why I've been considering the s4 since the bezels are so thin.

>>51774034
how big? a few smartphones that come to my mind are lg g flex 2, s5, opx, wileyfox swift (although the recoverymode might be fucked)
>>
>>51774034
>>51774125
Around 5"~5,5" should be fine. Also seems like the best price/quality chinkphone here is the Xiaomi Mi4
>>
Guys can you tell me if there's any issues or negative points about the UMI Iron?
>>
>>51774125
>considering the s4

>S4 5.0" screen
>136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9 mm

>LG G2 5.2" screen
>138.5 x 70.9 x 8.9 mm

so 5mm (0.2") larger screen, for 2mm more height and 1mm more width.
>>
>>51774172

It's replaceable, non-removable just means you can't fast swap, and unless you're legit homeless or some shit, when the fuck are you not within reach of an outlet for 20 minutes to top off the phone?

Sorry, but you're fucked if you want removable battery going forward, In 2015 already 90% of flagships dont come with removable battery, I dont expect this trend to change.
>>
So again me, the guy who's interested in Flex 2 because it's cheap and looks like G4.

Today I took both phones and the full HD on 5.5" looks stretched as fuck. Compared to G4's beautiful sharpness, I saw pixels easily on Flex2 when looked closely.

Am I retarded and it's just a placebo (it's fucking 400 ppi goddamnit) or it's true that fullHD looks stretched on 5.5" screen?

>being a poorfag
>>
>>51774338
Why is that? I can understand that there are no such needs if you are living in the USA, but here in Europe i cant even find a single charger anywhere besides home. I already bought a additional external power pack and iam considering to get a second one. I run around with a fucking backpack with electrical energie.
>>
>>51774501
took both phones side-by-side*
>>
>>51774501
i mean, comparing a 1440p directly to a 1080p it will be fairly easy to see the differences, 1080p is fine on 5.5" but if you get used to 1440p on that size, it will be hard for you to go back to 1080p
>>
Does anybody here have the LG V10 already and can you give some thoughts about it I'm kinda curious about it? since it's coming out soon

>Without Simlock
>Heavy App and Game using, rootable,
>high disk(sd) space (changeable would be the best, right?)
>no idea about size,
>medicore battery size,

One big point would be the ability for screen transmission over Ip.
>>
>>51774541
I'm used to 1080p on 5" screen and it's perfectly sharp for me, but there's noticable difference on 5.5". It's only 40 ppi, but it's a border I guess.
>>
Should i get the note 4 or lg v10?
>>
USA, Verizon, opportunity to switch to the monthly device payment plan, currently using debloated galaxy s4.
I require an SD card slot.
The options are Note 4, Droid turbo 2, G4, and V10. I like battery life, so really it's between the note 4 and Droid turbo 2.
I also have the option to not upgrade. What should I do?
>>
Has anyone had any issues with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3?
>>
>>51774297
Best battery among mainstream phones would be Z3/Z5 Compact. Sony's battery improvements combined with a small 720p screen give you the best battery life. I don't know if the Z5 is better or worse, I'm guessing worse than the Z3 due to a shitty overheating processor.

Anything that runs 6.0 will give you better battery when the phone is stationary thanks to Doze, currently only Nexus devices have it.

Nexus phones don't have capacitive buttons on the bezel, they have on screen navigation keys.

OnePlus phones have buttons, but they can be set to use on screen keys in the settings.

Mostly it's just Samsung phones that have capacitive keys, and to add insult to injury the back button is on the wrong side.

>>
>>51776548
I don't have this particular model, but usually sony phones do have a bit of bloat. can be blocked without rooting though so it doesn't eat up ram and battery. still wastes a few hundred mb of space, but with an sd card and a decent internal memory it really doesn't matter much
>>
>>51773245
>Nominations for other best of categories welcome!

Could we maybe have a "best battery life" or "most robust smartphone" section? I would think those criteria would be quite important to many people
>>
Asked yesterday as well, but..

Europe
Budget: Between 150€~400€
Use: For work, IT
What i want: Something decently priced as I probably wont have use for a premium flagship phone at work. As stock Android 5 / 6 as possible. 16gb storage should be plenty.

As a Nexus 5 owner I was looking at 5X and 6P, and it didn't seem that the 5X was that different and while 6P seems really nice, it's probably a bit overboard. I've never used a Samsung phone since I've been wary of Touchwizz, but maybe it's not so bad anymore? Moto G or Moto X, people complain about customer support, but I'm not sure if that will ever be an issue for me.

>>
>>51776699
Do yourself a favor and save up for that 6P.

Best smartphone I have ever used.
>>
Nexus 5 or 5X? Is the battery that much better on the 5X?
>>
>>51776760
Well, it's not my money. It's for work, bought by work. Since I work in the IT department I'm somewhat free to choose what I want, but can't really splurge all too much. Sure some people get expensive iPhones, so it could be possible, but feels a bit like a waste. Most people get Samsung S3-S5.

They're great phones that have poor band support in the US, or none at all, and the company itself has a bad reputation for warranty support.
>>
>>51776812
If people are getting iPhones there's no reason for you not to get the 6P. Although as a work phone, it kind of limits your ability to tinker with it (custom ROMs, rooting, Xposed, etc) which is the best part of having a Nexus. Personally I think the 6P is a great phone, just a little too big. Thus I went with the 5X.

OnePlus Two supports LTE on band 3 and 7 (global model) so you should get LTE service the vast majority of the time on Telstra. It is missing band 28 so you might not get LTE inside office buildings and stuff (700 MHz penetrates better).

European OnePlus X is the same story, gets 3 and 7 but no 28.

That being said, I suggest going with the 5X. The lag meme is really overblown, I don't have any performance issues with my decrypted 5X. Plus the Global model supports every band on Telstra, even band 28 (oooh).

Is $250 a good price for an LG G3?

I need an unlocked GSM phone, around $250, 5.5" - 6", and has custom roms because my prepaid carrier doesn't do OTA.

Is it worth it to spend $300 on a used G4? It does have a removable battery.

>Location/Carrier
USA - T-mobile or AT&T. Looking to buy unlocked so i can pick between the two
>Budget:
$300-$450 but may consider higher if really compelled
>Usage:
web browsing, social media, music, pictures. Literally never play games.

>Needs:
High battery life especially in screen-on time and music playback (i rarely call or watch videos). No bullshit or crapware. Stock android or something comparable is ideal and need it to just werk.
>Preferences:
Good screen would be nice but i'm really not too picky about it.
Decent front and back camera is also always a plus. I'm coming from a Windows phone which has an excellent camera and i would like to still be capable.
>Phones looked into / considered
Nexus 5x is looking the nicest. Looking into Moto X and pure edition. Not sure how i feel about Sony phones because i haven't heard much about them. So really i guess im looking either for alternatives to those two or opinions on which is better.

>Other notes:
I'm willing to pay a premium to get a better screen, battery, and camera even though i wouldn't ever use the power most of those phones come built with. Im also not a huge memory hog so even 16gb is fine for me.
The reason im switching to android rather than getting one of the new Lumia's is because WP has no apps.
>>
>>51780599
I'm looking at just about the same usage and I've come to an LG G Flex 2.
Its 300 dollars unlocked on amazon, has 32gb storage with msd capability, 3gb ram, 1080p 5.5in screen. Only concern I've had and you probably will have is battery life. It's probably worth you checking it out.
>>
>>51776396
fucking SHIT battery life and the phone screen is the only thing that is 4k. the actual icons, design layouts, etc, are only at 1080. thats why the PPI is so high.

Sup smartphone junkies,

I have a question, if I may.
Do any of you store large amounts of music on your phone via SD card?

By large I mean like 128gb+
It seems to me that if I put say... 10 or 20gb of music onto the SD card and use that, it works just fine. However if I cram it to the brim with music, like 120gb worth, then try to use it... It slows down the phone and ends up not being able to read any of the music at all. One way or another the card ends up corrupted and I have to format it again.

Is this just me expecting too much from my phone? Are we not yet at the stage where we can expect this much music to be reliably loaded into the phone? My phone is a couple years old, but still it shouldn't matter that much should it?

tl;dr Anyone use an sd card to store lots of music on their phone?

Honestly, if you're considering getting a windows phone stop, just get a non smart phone.

If you have Vodafone in your country just buy a smart ultra 6, at least then you can have apps.

What should I do /g/?

I really want an Xperia Z5, but the price tag of 730€ is ridiculous. The Z5c is "only" 500€, but the screen is kinda small so I feel like it wouldn't be as nice to watch videos and surf the internet with.

The price difference is so big though that I'm not really sure if I should just go with the compact since the specs are identical apart from the screen.
>>
>>51788753

>>51776425
Neither. Go get yourself and old 1020. It'll run better and stay cheap.

But that 5.2 inch screen though. Smaller than 5 inches is horror to read articles on or to look at pictures with. That's literally all I'm worried about. I wish I could try out a phone for like three days before actually buying it in order to make sure that I'm fine with it.

I just upgraded to the newest version of CM today (I tried it around a month ago for the first time).

Holy shit, the dev fucking knows his shit; the rom runs as smooth as the stock 4.2 rom this phone had, if not smoother.

He has fixed all the bugs I had with that rom previously, and I haven't even reported them (they're really minor).

Only thing I have to take care of is the battery; and how do I go about this one, /g/? Any apps or settings I need to change? Sync is obviously off....

I will look at it though, I've been avoiding reviews of it so far because I really just don't care about Nexus phones as I feel like they get a free pass for certain things and are praised far too much even though they're not that special.
>>
>>51789398
its old enough and the battery is small enough, you may want to look in getting a 2nd battery.
>>
>>51789483
It's the ROM's fault for this one; stock could easily reach 4 hours and 30 minutes of SOT across three days.

Guess what I need is something that blocks apps from running when the phone is off, just like stamina mode.
>>
>>51789468
>>51789205
Oh nevermind. It's a 5.7 inch phone. Far too big, now I remember why I blanked it.
>>
>>51789525
Yea I figured the ROM was part of it, but besides manually turning shit off, i'd just carry an extra battery with you.
>>
>>51789568
5.2" is fine but 5.7" is too big? Huh...

The 6P is 12mm taller and 5mm wider than the Z5.

is 5mm width REALLY that big of a deal?
>>
>>51790009
5.2'' is already pushing it. 5' is perfect for me, but there are no 5 inch phone anymore for some reason.

I've held "Phablets" in my hand and tried putting them in my pocket, they are too big for me. The bigger screen is neat, but not worth it. Besides, if I would buy a phablet, it would be the LG V10.

And this is with several apps open.

The most tasking by far are social media apps since they're constantly on and refreshing. Even when you close the app, it stays on and you need to go to the task manager to shut it off. If you want to save battery life and RAM, install "Lite" versions off social media apps if they exist. Facebook Lite is on F-Droid and it's way faster and lightweight. You can access vines and twitter on your browser. There are no alternatives for WhatsApp and snapchat though.

I'm not going to tell you what phone to buy, but here's some wisdom:

>any phone resolution above 1080p is a waste and you cannot tell the difference
>higher res screens tend to both be dimmer and drain battery, they're just made to pander to 'muh specs'
>you need at least 2GBs RAM for an always smooth experience
>3GBs is the sweet spot, and while 4GBs is unnecessary, it further "future-proofs" a phone
>moar cores is actually good, although be wary that some octacore phones overheat
>still, any Snapdragon 800+ series phone is great
>for gaming, the newer the GPU the better usually
>more internal storage > microSD card slot, always
>metal unibody phones are overrated, they're more prone to overheating and bending
>always make sure the phone you're looking at supports the network bands you're using

I like the OnePlus 2, but pick the phone that's right for you.

Doesn't matter at all really. It's all Samsung's name, but it doesn't have to do with their phones. If their phones don't do well they still would cut down on their phones eventually.

Same for Sony, Apple, LG, etc. Only really companies like HTC, BlackBerry, and OnePlus sink or swim depending on their phones.

/sp/ is shitpost central.

How about you go back there?

You are obviously on the wrong board.
>>
I'm having battery issues with my nexus 5. The battery is completely dead but when I try to plug in the charger, I don't even see a battery charging icon on the screen.
>>
>>51774589
It's a great phone. It's big but you will get used to it.

Second screen is useful as media controls, recent apps and contacts.

Camera is fast and takes excellent pictures.

At first I didn't like the speaker placement on the bottom, but it's really in the right spot to echo of your hand when holding it.
>>
>>51795301
how about you get the fuck over the past and accept that /sp/ is one of the epicenters of contemporary 4chan culture? or better yet how about we both shut up and talk about smartphones?

Getting a 6p soon. Did a lot of research and the bend meme is just that, a meme not worth considering. Heard it gets a little warm but I don't really mind. What I'm most excited about is performance. The damn things a beast, especially since it doesn't throttle easily. I'll have to find some sort of case to get rid of that stupid fucking visor on the back though. Maybe a dbrand or something.
>>
>>51794609
The OPO is this way too, it's a wide angle lens. Same thing on the galaxy phones IIRC. Its so you get more in the shot than just your face at arms length
>>
>>51795373
Yeah personally if I get a 6P before the next nexus phone, I'd skin that thing because fucking a huge phone without a case or skin that's pure aluminum is a mistake.
>>
>>51794690
That was my point, that sounds like something reddit would bitch about

Is it as slippery as HTC phone?

It really isn't anymore, but /sp/ is still one of the fun boards.

Got my 6P today. It's a beauty, but I fucked up application of the screen protector and I can't get another one until after work tomorrow. Will I be fine for a day or should I leave the thing at home?

OnePlus 2, LG G4, Sony Xperia Z5 (Maybe Premium) or Nexus 5X? T-Mobile (US), and no real budget. Thoughts on any of those devices?
>>
>>51796921
6P, I know it sounds like a meme to recommend this to everyone at this point, but it's just the best. Really that simple.
>>
>>51796801
I own the phone dumbass
>>
>>51796937
This or the OnePlus 2, it's a matter of preference really.

I would go OnePlus 2 because it looks awesome and I like custom ROMs. Also I don't like metal unibody phones. Still an awesome looking phone though.

The biggest reason I'd never get a oneplus is band support in the US

Second is their abysmal customer service

Google is better than Apple for cs, literally best out there. They practically will felch your asshole if you have a problem.
>>
>>51797237
Only the OPX has bad band support, the OPO and OP2 have full band support.

We're talking about the OP2 lad.

Ah shit, that's good to know. Thanks.

Too bad it won't work on Verizon. I go out into the sticks too much to rely on ATT or TMobile. My wife is on Verizon, and I'm still on ATT until this summer. She has always had superior signal.
>>
>>51797767
Also the customer service isn't that bad. Actually the customer service is nice, it's just they used to never like ever replace faulty phones. I've heard good stories on XDA and elsewhere now so I think it's alright, but back when the OPO was hardly a speck on the smartphone map, they didn't do many favors to their early customers.

That's not true, I keep hearing stories about them refusing to deal with replacing their super shitty cables and claim all faults are user accidents.
>>
>>51797924
Their super shitty cable that doesn't even meet proper spec for the cable type.

/g/, so i have the Xperia Z Ultra, and i rooted it. noticed that the camera quality has degraded significantly, didn't touch the bootloader its still locked, what do?

Anyone using or used the Vodafone Smart Ultra 6? Thinking of buying but it's so cheap and high spec I'm initially sceptical about getting it without it being crap over time

Mfw only £115 for

> 5.5 inch full hd screen
>13MP + 5mp camera
> bloatware can be deleted
> so pretty much stock android
