Old thread was slow as fuck.

Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are three ways to try Linux, you can:

1) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux (not recommended)

If you are serious about switching to Linux and if you have Windows dual-booted (recommended for pure newbies),
we recommend you use it exclusively for 2 weeks, and avoid Windows dual booting for that period of time, or it's
likely you will start retreating back to windows instead of getting used to GNU/Linux as your new home and working on
making it feel the way you want it.

>Recommended for beginners:
-Ubuntu MATE
-Debian (For Broadcom devices, use an ISO that includes non-free firmware)
-openSUSE
-LinuxMint (a.k.a Ubuntu LTS + Cinnamon)

Before asking, please find the answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe wine can make up for it.

This time I'm really tired, so I'll answer that: If you are serious about switching to GNU plus Linux (or whatever) be sure that you have one or two free weeks to do that. This is not a matter if you boot onto Windows, you just have to understand the difference between them.

Thinking of installing Parabola Linux (was going to go arch but Parabola is FSF endorsed).

Anything I should know before getting into it?

I was also considering Gentoo, but I don't know if that's a completely free system and it sounds like more work than even my autistic ass will do to make it work.

Yes, I know this is a Gentoo shill board, but please provide actual arguments and advice for whatever you tell me.

Yeah, the wikipedia page for Parabola mentioned hardware issues surfacing due to lack of free firmware (i.e. I'd need a fucking usb thing to get wifi).

So I'm about to reinstall xubuntu since my attempt to switch from ubuntu MATE to Xubuntu-desktop didn't work as planned.

Just wondering - is there any real difference between Linux Mint XFCE and Xubuntu in anything that matters? Only thing I thought that made Mint special was cinnamon.

Hey /Flt/. I have another request for suggestions on which distro to get.(last time I asked it was for an older laptop for my father, and ya'll were helpful as fuck so I'm here again.)
I'm thinking of dual-booting with windows(Steam library's too big to just not use 50% of my games) and I'd like to get a DE(I think that's the right term?) that resembles Easy Peasy linux(which is no longer supported). I kind of like the big bright icon layout, because I use two large screen tvs for my computer monitors(I sit a bit further back on a bed/chair and use the whole thing as my entertainment center too). So I'm looking for a distro that has that sort of themeing/look and is also a decent distro. Willing to learn of course.

Assuming you're using Xubuntu and don't already have compiz then follow these instructions.

You'll want to download compiz first, this will allow you to make applications open in certain workspaces. Do this with the following command in the terminal:

sudo apt-get install compiz

Next, you'll want the settings tool for compiz so that you can edit the settings more easily. Get this by typing:

sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

Once that has done make sure that compiz is running and open the settings manager and scroll all the way to the bottom until you see the option, "Place Windows". Tick the box next to that and then "Place Windows" button itself. Then you're going to want to go to "Fixed Window Placement" in the top tabs. Then go to "Windows with fixed viewport" and click on "New". Then click the green plus button and change "Type" to "Window Class". Then, next to value, click on "Grab" and click on the application you want to open in a certain workspace. Then, copy the text that shows up in the "Value" box but leave the text there, you can then click on add to exit that window. From here, you're going to want to click the box next to "Viewport positioned windows" and paste in the text you copied next to "class=". If the "class=" is not there then make sure this goes into that box, "class='Value you copied'". Then change the "X Viewport Positions" to the number of whatever workspace you want and click close. When you open the application, it should now open in the workspace that you chose.

That's not possible man. That's equivalent to you wanting to "change completely to PS4, taking every game you currently have for Xbox One with you and leaving Xbox behind". Sure, some titles are cross platform but you're still going to miss out on other titles that are only made for one platform or the other..
>>
>>51777493
>What about Linux game performance?
really depends on the game and the drivers you use.
at the moment it's nvidia proprietary>amd open>amd proprietary>>>>nvidia open
for valve games you may even see a performance increase coming from windows.
>>
>>51777509
Yeah cadence has a feature where you set up "studios" so you could load it up and everything is already connected. You can route everything, alsa, pulseaudio, to go through jack so you can have it running all the time, that's what I do. There are actually a number of ways to do it with jack, jack plumbing is another way I've heard of.
>>
>>51777307
lets say half of them is just mods to other games.
And half of the remaining is shitty games nobody would ever play, that still leaves over 400 games.
But if you feel that the newest games are the only way to make yourself happier, maybe you should use a platform where the games exist.
You cannot say that there is no games on linux.
There is a lot of people who are making games for linux.
It is not everybody, but so what?
There is enough entertainment in the selection we have.
>>

>>
>>51777607
I think cadence requires jack2 but there's not a huge difference between the two, they are forks so 2 isn't necessarily better than 1.

>>

>Not him but what about amd open being better than amd proprietary?
highly depends on usecase but if you compile the newest radeon drivers it will be more stable than the proprietary drivers and better for a some games. also amd contribute to the open drivers on a regular basis and i think they are looking to make everything they can open.
>What about the performance of it? For the sake of argument let's say performance in videogames since you can compare it easily.
depends on driver and game. tell us a game and the card you use.

Botnets are more like applications that claim they have to run in the background and while they run, they create network traffic which you cannot control.
There are botnet games, but there are still games that does not use the network connection when you play single player and doesn't depend on services like steam (which is a botnet by that definition) in order to run.

Alright, so, I have been fighting with samba for a week now. It's getting fucking frustrating.

I have a home server with Fedora 23 Server running on it. I have samba installed and running. I have my smb.conf correct and it tests fine with testparm. I also have the firewall set up to allow samba and samba-client through, including the ports.

But I can't fucking see it from any computer on the network. I can't even remote desktop or ssh into it. I can administer it using Cockpit just fine, which is what I have been using to work on this. But it will not show up.

What am I missing. At this point it has to be something incredibly stupid.

It's just pointless. Gentoo gives you endless options and choices, gentoo users install it for an extremely varied range of reasons, hardware, and usages. Installing is really quite easy, there is no point introducing bugs and limited choice with some shitty script. If you don't want to customize your installation to exactly what you need or want (not ricing, minimal for servers, fully packed for desktops, no pulseaudio, whatever), then just use something else.

So I'm currently on fedora 23 with XFCE. I set the theme to Bluebird and I've been toying around with the theme a bit but I'm currently very aggravated with a single issue.

I have the pulseaudio plugin for my top panel, but for whatever reason when my mouse is off it it'll go completely white (instead of the dark blue it's supposed to be). When I hover over it it'll change to the slightly lighter blue that all the other panel items have on hover. The second I click on it or move my mouse away, it'll start a maybe 500-1000 ms animation where it'll go almost completely white.

I've been digging around the gtkrc file and the panel.rc file and can't find the reason why it defaults to this bright white color. This problem doesn't exist some themes but does in others, so I've been trying to compare the gtkrc files. The same exact problem happens with the power-manager-plugin.

Does anybody know where I can track this down?
>>
>>51779755
Right, that's why I'm asking for an alternative that isn't Mint/Ubuntu.

How can i reboot without rebooting the kernel?
Basically i want init to shutdown like normal and then the kernel or init restarts init.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
