god dammit why are laptops so fucking overpriced? I have $450 on my amazon account after returning shit. I want to buy the best laptop I can find. It's all fucking garbage. $450 into a tower would shit all over these things for 10 years and last that long as well. These fucking shitbooks look like they'd die in two years, let alone become obsolete by then.

I see loads of laptops around my area (in brick and mortar stores) for sub $400. They're all perfectly fine computers for 90% of computing tasks. Its really just games and graphics, and virtual machines, that will stress a computer out so obviously if thats your plan you need to budget more

$450 for a prebuilt desktop is going to suck ass too. but still be enough for 90% or more of computer tasks

I think the mere fact that a new laptop can be had for $400 or less is astonishing.

And a laptop has tons of parts a desktop doesnt. like a battery, and a monitor, and a keyboard and mouse, webcam and mic. wifi adapter, bluetooth adapter.

lol captcha was identify street signs, there were at least 5 pics of cannabis nugs
>>
>>51767140
Build quality is an issue with cheap laptops.
Sure they're less than $400, but they'll last you 6 months at most before falling apart.
I'd say a quality ultra portable is probably the best thing you can buy; problem is I can't stand windowshit and macfaggotry so I'm worried that if I buy an ultrabook I won't be able to run my distro of choice on it.

Worst things:
- low-ish resolution(1366x768)
- Speakers, by far the worst I've ever had in a laptop.
- Weird, super-proprietary hp BIOS. Nothing inhibiting about it, just kind of a pain to work with sometimes. Can definitely tell it was meant to be a super-corporate laptop though through the QuickWeb options.
Other than having the island keys which bothers some but I don't mind, its a great laptop. With a quad-core i5 sandybridge, 16gigs(unneccesary but need to run a bunch of VMs sometimes), and a 500 gig spinning disk it does a great job of getting me through college. However, don't expect it to drive more than two screens at a time. That's been my primary gripe between it and newer thinkpads which can sometimes drive three screens. However, it does support displayport out which is great if you have a single, high resolution monitor. Also looks and feels very clean despite having used it for a year and a half very regularly. I would attribute that to the aluminum-ish exterior.

So do you think 15.6 is too big or too small?

cause for me its too big. 10"-13.5" is perfect for a laptop imho. I only wish manufacturers would start pumping 1080p or higher screens into those things. I cant stand this 1366x768 shit

in my opinion screen res trumps screen size completely. larger screens are a red flag for low dpi.

So youre poor. The base cost for the size of the parts is $450. It will scale much faster after you stop being poor.
Did you think that monitor in your screen was free. Did you think that mouse and keyboard were free. Did you not think that because of their format its going to be more expensive. Intel is amazing so the cpu's are about the same price its just limited to the heat. GPU's cost a shit ton. Did you think squeezing a 380mm gpu into 20mm was cheap.

>>
>>51767696
I don't know what you're expecting from a business laptop other than to be heavy.

Regardless of the laptops age, the newest W541 from this year is almost no different from the W520 from ~2011. Specs have changed, nothing else has.

Frankly, if you're seriously expecting business laptop tier performance from ultrabook thin laptops for under $1700, you have brain problems.
>>
Man, don't even go there bitching about laptops being overpriced. It's like they're practically giving that shit away in the US. Here in the land of the rising dung one has to pay 2-3 times as much for something that's already a generation or two behind. For how much people picture this place as some kind of tech utopia it's like a third world shithole. I saved over $1,000 US buying a laptop from B&H (Amazon and Newegg won't ship overseas), paying for international shipping, and then paying tax on top of that.

All you need to know about thinkpads is either you get a x220 or a t420. And that all comes down to preference.

When it comes to laptops you should buy used. No, really.
You can get laptops that are high quality, but just older. And so cheaper.
The tradeoff is you get older parts, but since the production quality was higher, the laptop will last.

The only Elitebook model I've heard that throttles is the 8460p, mine (2170p) has an i5-3427U processor so I doubt it throttles when charging, but I only have 65W adapters. You can slap a 250W adapter on any Elitebook if you really felt like it.

Not really kekpad propoganda, just HP's poor thermal solutions meme for their consumer crap rolling over to their professional range, Elitebooks don't have the best cooling but it sure is a hell of a lot better than the pavilion garbage they produce, cleaning is easier as well because most of HP's professional laptops put most of the components behind a single door so cleaning fan/heatsink is 2-3 screws away.

I wanted to buy laptop with WQHD display and it would've cost more than 2000 euros.

So I made PC with 2x980 Ti instead.

Fuck laptops my dumbphione is enough for me

I'm really set on buying myself an Asus ROG G752VT. Found one on clearance, has an i7 6700HQ, 24GB DDR4, a GTX970M, 1TB HD and a 128 SSD. Can't find anything wrong with it or the distributor, so I'm ready to shell out $1,470.

Then buy a used memepad or elitebook.

X220 is perfect for mobility imho. Get something else if the low resolution bothers you.

this is stupid. even myself i do some photoshop works on a T61p when i'm on the move, and some graphics stuff, but a desktop PC remains important if you want to do serious stuff. it's about the work environment too.

>13yo me has shitty Acer laptop
>charger dies
>see used HP charger for $2 in discount bin at second hand store
>buy it
>don't know about voltages
>try to plug it into laptop
>barrel too short
>use knife to strip back plastic
>barrel reaches now
>use it with no problems for 2 years
>charger brick ended up melting when it was left under blanket

I'm lucky to be alive guys
>>
>>51770166
HP chargers are 18.5v/19v/19.5v while Acer chargers are 19v, I don't see the problem here.
>>
>>51770176
I was more referring to the fact that dumbass me had no clue that laptop chargers had different voltages/wattages, and persisted with hacking off pieces of plastic to make something that obviously didn't fit work.

If the voltage was right, it doesn't matter much.
Leaving the brick under a blanket is pantsu-on-head retarded though.
