I don't have an amp nor a good dac. Is it worth investing into one before buying headphones? I only have a pair of 7506s so
>>
>>51739448
no
a dac is only useful if you have some audible problem, like background noise
an amp is only useful if your phones dont get loud enough. im sure your 7506s are fine from onboard, assuming that is your use application
>>
Sony MA900 Master Race.

Protip: Resonance in your earcanals reduce soundquality and my EQing it out you will have a nice increase in SQ

Heres an extended how to:
http://www.head-fi.org/t/413900/how-to-equalize-your-headphones-a-tutorial

The short answer for /g/:
The simple solution: Sounds at 5-7.5k herz cause resonance in your ears, lower them by a few db to your taste for wider sound.

Youre mileage may wary, since you need pretty good headphones and foobar2000 or similar with extended EQ
>>
I got a Senn HD598, friend got Astro A40. He's trying to tell me I got a shit pair of headphones. I'm pretty sure I have the better pair. Anyone care to let me know who's right here?
>>
I might get Audio Technica M50X for christmas, anyone here know if there would be something better?

Am gonna use it for DJing so it's a wide spectrum of music and casual listening, possibly plug it into the TV on late nights so I don't disturb the neighbours.

I listen mostly to different electronic music genres, but I also listen occasionally to rock and sometimes rap/hiphop.

I prefer over the ear headphones, and I have quite big ears.

Right now I own Sennheiser HD-25 C II but they are falling apart.
I know I can buy parts for it but for the same money to fix it I can buy new headphones that might fit my ears better and are comfortable for long wears.

There are so many things wrong with that guide I may as well write my own.

>Resonance in your earcanals reduce soundquality and my EQing it out you will have a nice increase in SQ
No.

>extended EQ
Parametric EQ. Most people use them here, while you have to do a bunch of thing to try and fit a VST to foobar, which doesn't natively accept them.
>>

>>
>>51739583
the guide is in the wiki as well. if you actually think its bad, youll have to say why to get it removed. but if you know this much, and are this sure of yourself, you should most certainly also write a better guide

>>51739608
you wont get improvements in audio quality. if you hear static or noise all the time, not just when audio is playing, then you should get a dac+amp.

better pads, but really you should have gotten something like a th-02 or ksc75 if you're a poorfag. 8323 were popular a while ago but they don't hold up. they're uncomfortable and eventually the headband plastic will crack near the cup and you'll have to tape it or something.

What I've heard is that they are basically identical just m50x is more expensive by a bit.
>>51739788
But it still hurts on my ears because it's on ear headphones after long period of listening though.

What are the reasons why m40x is better?
>>
>>51739865
The problem is that some people try to eliminate the upper mid gain or add in silly amounts of bass to try and make everything sound flat to a sine sweep.
In practice, you can get around it by playing it loud, or not using the sine in that way.

I'm actually quite liking the 400i. No stupid F connectors and the clamp doesn't bother me at all. The headband makes it look like a vice but the clamp is mild and well distributed.
Only thing i can comment on them is that i mistakenly though planar bass meant it had incredible impact to skull shaking levels, it's not and it's just linear and reaches very deep.
They're not replacing my SRH1540 as they are more fun to listen to while the 400i are more neutral. They kinda compliment each other.

Are there any mods for the 400i worth doing? They seem great stock but i was wondering if there was a grill mod like the old he400 that supposedly improved soundstage. The
soundstage on the 400i isn't as wide as i'd thought it would be for such an open looking headphone. I'm not sure if that's just a planar attribute. Also is it me or is it more difficult to tell
when open headphones are too loud than it is with closed backs? I seem to drive open headphones to louder levels without discomfort than with closed headphones.

So, I'm new at this. Upgraded from gamer gear headsets couple months ago. Got myself an ATH A-900X which I like a lot, but they don't sound loud enough. I'm using them with my computers onboard amp, MSI Z97, I'm wondering which amp to get just to get their volume a bit louder.

I've got a budget around $50, I've looked at FiiO E6but some comments and reviews on various sites say they might be hurting the soundstage. Is that just bullshit?

>tl;dr Can you please recommend me an amp around $50 to make ATH A-900Xs louder without hurting their quality.

Been looking to buy new headphones but I am pretty uneducated in the subject. Currently using a pair of astro a40s with the mixamp that are about 5 years old now. Been looking at sennheiser 598s tried my buddies and thought they sounded good.

Budget: about 100-250. If there were some kind of mega jump in quality i would probably go up to 400 max.

Location: USA

Source: They would be plugged into my astro mixamp which is connected via usb to my computer. I have an optical cable laying around (idk if that would make a difference in sound quality, i would dig it up if it did)

Preferred: Fullsize

Comfort level: looking for pretty comfortable headphones since i will be wearing them upwards of 6 hours a day.

Preferred music: mostly listen to hip hop, rap but also listen to edm but mostly rap.

Past/current headphones: currently using astro a40s. I like the comfort level of the a40s but i feel like i want a little more bassy headphones.

Any help would be appreciated sorry if the formating is bad im posting from mobile

sorry dude! I didn't say it had no sound stage, i said it wasn't as 'wide' as others I've tried. I assumed soundstage was something attributed to how the headphones are constructed. For example closed headphones would have less sound stage than open headphones and high end headphones like the HD800 have wide soundstage and imaging because of the housing that the drivers sit in. As for the louder thing i kinda guessed it was what you were saying but i wanted someone else's opinion, i generally don't assume something based on my own conclusions because i could always be wrong. Thanks for the confirmation though.

If everyone swears that the HD558 sounds so much better with the foam mod, why does Sennheiser still use that foam tape several years after the product was first introduced?

There must be some benefit I don't know about.

Man you're really showing your inexperience with competitive CS as a whole. You should probably stick to Battlefield and CoD.

The benefit is HD598 sales.
>>
>>51741157
Not cannibalizing their other products
>>
Is buying used headphones worth it?
>>
>>51741157
No benefit, engineered to sound worse so they can charge the premium for 598 "justifiably" due to "better sound". Btw 518s sound exactly the same with side shells removed due to same drivers...

So they're sabotaging the sound so people will go up to the HD598. But if people are comparing the HD558 to other headphones in its price bracket, they risk losing customers to another brand entirely

velour or faux leather earpads?
>>
>>51742386
velour every time
>>
>>51742386
Leather: if you good isolation and comfort, they do tend to get sweaty and degrade and crack.

Velour: if you want pads that breath better, they can be itchy and attract tons of lint and some may even stain your ears due to dyes used.

Hybrid: Hifiman makes pads that are velour and leather.

The unobtanium: Alcantara, found in high end headphones like the HD800s, Momentums, and SRH1540. It's soft and isolates well without getting hot and sweaty or attracting lint.

This is really bothering the SHIT out of me. I bought these off of amazon a week or so ago, and I've had them a few days, like 3 or so. I've worn them and have done nothing to harm them. I have been nothing but gentle, but here is what I have noticed:

The left side slides up and down much easier than the right, and sometimes shifts when I don't want it to (sizing notches)... The ear cups NEVER EVER align properly as you can see, even when at the exact same extension/ size notch lengths.... I finally decided to open the top and look at the metal piece, and I'm convinced it must have slightly warped or something... What the fuck... Am I crazy? Are they fine and I'm crazy? Or am I right? If I'm right, what the fuck do I do? Bitch at amazon and make them ship a new pair for free for damaging them? Or be a fag and buy a new band for 10 USD and "hope" it fixes the issue, assuming A; there is an issue and B; that is the issue.

So THIS is what I get for purchasing supposedly high quality headphones that are really well acclaimed...
>>
>>51743208
Congrats I think you're the first person on earth to have this problem.
>>
>>51742188

>>51743489
Well thanks for the help anyway. I really hope they send a new pair that just... works. I mean nobody else has had this issue, right? Maybe they got fucked in a warehouse or something accidentally.
>>
>>51743540
are you ocd irl? the odds of you getting two bad ones in a row are pretty low, but its not like they wouldnt let you send them back again
>>
>>51743540
Amazon will make it right.
They blow my mind with their customer service.
>>
>>51743560
I'm OCD about certain things yes, and this is one of them. I mean they sound fine and are comfortable, I do really love them aside from this, but the band is totally not placed correctly on my head if I align the cups to the ears, because of what you see in the picture.

Dealing with this shit warped like this the past few days has made me go virtually insane, it's very upsetting to me visually.

>>51743570
I've heard good things but never really used it myself, I'll trust your word though.
>>
>>51743589
For whatever reason, with this pair at least, I do move the notches all the way down as far as they go to compensate my head shape, and most people I see online reviewing or wearing them, have it up to a maximum of 3 notches, and I'm going to like 6 and 7... Is that normal/ common? Did I somehow damage them? (I'm pretty confident they were like this from the start though).
>>
>>51743589
Personal experience.
>get thing
>thing is broken
>hey amazon, this is broken.
>oh, here's a new thing, overnight.
>Where do I send broken thing
>keep it.
>ok.
>managed to fix thing some time later.
Shipping was also delayed a bit on the initial order so that might of been a factor in them
letting me keep it.
>>
>>51743630
Nice. Do they demand proof of it being damaged?
>>
>>51743678
Just go fucking contact Amazon already instead of wasting time asking questions here holy shit.
>>
>>51741467
It sounds worse and it needs more power to drive.

Not to mention it's less comfortable and not as durable as the HD558.

The HD558 is also far more neutral.
>>
>>51743678
They are pretty much no questions asked if you have never done it before.
Lots of people just go "hey I never got my thing" (when they did) and just get a full refund.

You keep your low fidelity trash, there's a reason why Sennheiser copied the DT880 sound with their flagship.
>>
>>51743717
HD558 has higher fidelity than Sennheiser's HD800 flagship. Also DT880 and HD800 peaks in different places, so it's not exactly a copy.

Regardless of your trash-tier opinions, HD558's fidelity is top-tier for headphones.
