YOU CAN'T STUMP THE TRUMP
>>
>>51736856
I'd be pretty disappointed if Trump tried to destroy a shining example of capitalism and disruption.

Amazon is proof that taxes crush innovation and should be removed entirely.
>>
Ex-amazon dev here.

Amazon's codebase is filled with some serious accomplishments of software and network engineering that is constantly being refactored. Amazon also has a very positive public image. Amazon is here to stay and be #1 at what it does until a massive credit card leak, or until a multi trillion dollar company attempts to compete.

lol what? it's infamous for that NYT expose, and even before that every half-competent engineer knew that Amazon was a terrible place to work.
>>
>>51737484
>There's no such thing as a trillion dollar company
Exactly.

Amazon already leads in online retail, cloud hosting (Amazon is responsible for over 10% of all web traffic right now) and they are breaking into the TV streaming business. They won't be dislodged without a series of tremendous fuck ups.
>>
>>51737552
They fucked up all Fire products
>>
>>51737526
>every half-competent engineer knew that Amazon was a terrible place to work.
It's very stressful, but good money and the codebase is almost pristine.
>>
>>51737562
If you try something new and fail, people laugh. If you change something successful and fail, people leave. The fire flopped, but that flop didn't affect its main user base
>>
>>51737595
Yes, but you can extrapolate that they will fuck up future products, too.
>>
>>51737562
It wasn't all bad. They designed some impressive image recognition software that they'll probably use in the upcoming drones.
>>
>>51737613
True. I think they'd literally have to switch to only selling vibrating nipple clamps to really fuck up though
>>

So who pays for the army? Police? Judges? Do you trully believe you can privatize everything?
>>
>>51737552
>breaking into the TV streaming business.
t´bh The Man In the High Castle is their only hit and it's not HBO or Netflix quality. They have a road way too long ahead to catch up to Netflix and personally I think Amazon is gonna stay way behind like Sony with the PSP and Nintendo with the DS.
>>
>>51737582
>Amazon has a very positive public image
>no it doesn't
>okay it doesn't, but everything on the inside is nice
everything we've seen from the outside - and everything i've heard from people who gave amazon a shot - says otherwise.

a few weeks ago some fucking retard came in here claiming he was an employee at amazon, making it out like it was great working there, and then it came out that he was a warehouse worker - basically a contractor moving boxes around. this is going to be the same shit, isn't it? just spare us all this fucking goose chase and stop posting.
>>
>>51737526
Yeah but the public does not give a fuck. Pretty much every publisher and author hates Amazon and the public know this too but people aren't buying books anywhere else.

I'd say Uber's reputation is much worse than Amazon's at this point but that's not going anywhere either.

And they are up to way worse tax shit.
>>
>>51737683
look dude, he made a retarded claim, i refuted it. that's the extent of this discussion. I'm not going to get into a fucking argument about whether the public CARES that amazon has a poor public image.

if you're going to weasel out of a claim, at least don't be so fucking transparent.

>>
>>51737683
>Pretty much every publisher and author

Pick one. Amazon consistently rank among the top companies for customer support and number 1 for customer satisfaction.
>>
>>51737402
I thought they also barely if ever made a profit because their prices are so low.

That is never sustainable.
>>
>>51737793
Moreso because of their philosophy of continuous expansion/innovation. Also, they do make profits, they're just not as enormous as the other tech giants.
>>
>>51737793

Not making a profit is precisely how they're sustainable -- the only way to compete with them would be to care even less about profit than they do; it's too late for anyone else to catch up with them now, they'll just get bigger and bigger until they control everything.

Also
> crumble like a paper bag
Trump confirmed for literally illiterate.
>>
I hate to say anything good about Trump, but fuck...its nice to have a republican candidate actually be willing to talk about this issue and support reforming the tax code to stop these fucking loopholes.

Businesses should not be able to operate in the US yet get out of paying most/all of their taxes by having shell corps and subsidiaries elsewhere and taking advantage of certain loopholes. This is just one of the reasons why capitalism is fucked and has been ruining this nation when allowed to be virtually unchecked.

that is straight up retarded. It's the exact opposite of communism regarding property & economy, and it could as well be the exact opposite regarding the existence & organization of state (theres both authoritarian communism (e.g. stalinism), as well as anarcho-communism).

So is profit the money earned after reinvesting into more warehouses, shipping contracts, R&D, etc? Amazon's primary goal looks like as much expansion as possible to the point where no company will be able to touch them in less than a decade, so losing some money doesn't seem that big of a deal. Amazon's stocks have been going crazy high even with their low profits, so the value of the company still goes up right?

eh i couldnt answer that since i really havent bothered to research them. their stock doesnt pay a dividend so you basically just wager in the long run when you sell it it will be higher.

it has basically been in a 'steady' increase, but whether or not it is overvalued would be up to people who actually research that stuff for a career. there are other companies that follow the same thing, where they basically dont make any money but they are highly valued. amazon has very valuable user behavior information though which is probably the biggest thing, but that only goes so far when the company itself posts losses every quarter. i think the last 2 quarters are their first where they actually made money consecutively

Amazon is operating at a marginal loss in order to crush its retail competition, eliminate small stores and family businesses, and become a near monopoly for all retail goods.

And it is doing that while paying almost nothing in taxes and abusing its workforce.

Donald Trump is absolutely right, but Jeff Bezos is so well connected, the US justice system even went against Apple (non-existent marketshare) instead of Amazon (complete monopoly) in the e-book market. The judge in the case even said the wrong company is being targeted, but Apple still lost.

Think about amazon prime, if people get used to using it (like me) and order at least 3 things a week that is a shit load of 3 day shipping. This is because the number of customers is more important than the number of dollars.

They had been doing this since the very beginning, going for normal profits would have killed them in the beginning because at that time nobody bought online.

that won't get you anything except more tax-inversion mergers. the problem with a soak-the-rich policy is that the rich have options and can take their business elsewhere. Back in the 50s the US was the only place in the worth that was both industrialized and not bombed to hell, so workers and taxmen had a strong bargaining position, capital had no choice but to pick the US. That's not even remotely true anymore. They have competition now, and lots of it.
>>
>>51740449
>I have worked for Amazon

Which department? Be specific and tell me your production numbers.

They put their warehouses in desperate areas following massive tax incentives. They work their employees to ruin or sometimes death. Picking orders is basically running for 12 hours on concrete and up and down stairs while being tracked to the second by your scanner which directly reports to your manager. One old lady I worked with just died one morning from overwork around peak. It's like working inside a giant prison complete with security gates and guards.

and if the US tried to use tariffs to keep out cheap goods from beyond it's borders, not only would it be in violation of several treaties, but then it would find itself in the position of having the jobs, meager as they were, gone, and goods more expensive since they're subject to punitive tariffs. You slug the working class from two directions at once - fewer jobs and an increased cost of living - by trying to spite the rich.
>>
>>51745431
Funny you mention picking, because that's what I was doing. I think I was hitting like 100-110/hr or some shit like that. It was no worse than when I worked at Menard's and had to get the same numbers, fight with a voice recognition system for my numbers, and lift much heavier shit for 1 less hour per day. It was no worse than when I was working at L Brands and throwing 100lb boxes of clothes into trailers for 10hrs a day. It was no worse than when I was working at MBM and lifting the same kinda of weights with asshole bosses.

Warehouse work sucks and we deserve a lot more than we get. The only bad thing about Amazon is that they're real assholes about phones. At least in the other places I could sneak my phone in.

Any 110 degree days? How long were you picking? You must be young and you must not have done picking very long, perhaps in a cool season.

The long-term workers all had horrendous permanent health problems and couldn't complain. You can't just get another job when they are the only employer in town.

Amazon only functions day to day because of all the immigrant day labor the hire.
If they paid any of these people at the same rate as their full time workers then the company really would be in trouble.
>>
>>51745655
I started in the middle of the year and quit January of the next. It got fucking hot in the summer, but so were the warehouses for all the other places. It got cold as fuck in the winter, too.

Yeah I'm young and I can definitely see how you could fuck up your body doing that shit, but it's the same as literally everywhere else I worked.

Point is that Amazon is no worse than any other warehouse except on phones. All warehouse work is fucking debilitating unless you get lucky and get to pick in Victoria's Secret warehouse. They get air conditioning and only lift panties and bras.
>>
>>51745739

Wrong mate.

Many Amazon Warehouses have air conditioning and heating. The only people that feel the bad weather conditions are the ones who work loading and offloading trailers.

Nevermind, I realized I was just dumb. Profit is AFTER all expenses (new contracts, R&D, more warehouses) are accounted for. Amazon doesn't really need much profit if they're just reinvesting money back into the company to completely rape any other US online distributor. 10 years down the line they could stop with expansion (once 95% of cities can get Amazon same day delivery or some shit) and increase profit by hundred folds, but right they it looks like they are just expanding to keep everyone off their backs.

When online companies don't stop expanding, they die. Overstock used to be massive about a decade ago, but Amazon completely steamrolled them on expansion. Not even an Amazon shill, but they do real good with using whatever money they have to expand, unlike Apple which just keep a ton in the bank for lawyer fees.
>>

I totally agree. And even if that was pulled off you'd have to understand that there still isn't 100% freedom, probably less so than a limited government.

Capital expenditures do not show up on the income statement. If you buy a $1 billion warehouse, it won't show up as a $1 billion expense. The warehouse only shows up as an expense affecting profit as it depreciates, so the expense get normalized across years, potentially decades.

Go be white and work at L Brands as a temp for 2-3+ years before you're even considered for core, and deal with them firing white people for fucking anything (1 minute late, etc; Costco is also bad about this) while the niggers and Muslims they hire get core in 6 months despite having shit numbers and being horrible at everything, and not speaking English. A) So he can tell his wife to suck his presidential dick
B) To create loopholes and trade agreements that benefit his multiple conflicts of interest

>Amazon could turn a profit today if it stopped investing. Wei says Amazon turns a profit on almost all transactions. It posts quarterly losses because of its massive investments. Corporations shouldn't pay income tax. Instead, we should raise the top marginal rates, raise long-term capital gains taxation over some amount, and work on reducing tax loopholes exploited by top staff (e.g. "$1 salary, but $10 million per year in stock taxed at 15%").

Here is the one and only thing that corporate income tax does: it penalizes small companies. A small company can't afford the Double Irish and similar multinational tax trickery.

You tax things you want to discourage.

This is a really flawed idea. Those companies failed because the web growth in developed nations started to falter and the web was no longer looking like a platform that was going to stick around. Then broadband penetration started to grow and the Web 2.0 revolution kicked off.

There is nothing to suggest the internet is ever going away at this point, it has become such an entrenched part of a modern civilised society that Amazon and Google are no longer subject to just crumbling the same way as those companies because of time frames, they have effectively built monopolies on the sectors they enter into because they have enough money to push anyone else out, just like traditional monopolies such as Utilities.

Benjamin Franklin to Robert Morris

25 Dec. 1783

The Remissness of our People in Paying Taxes is highly blameable; the Unwillingness to pay them is still more so. I see, in some Resolutions of Town Meetings, a Remonstrance against giving Congress a Power to take, as they call it, the People's Money out of their Pockets, tho' only to pay the Interest and Principal of Debts duly contracted. They seem to mistake the Point. Money, justly due from the People, is their Creditors' Money, and no longer the Money of the People, who, if they withold it, should be compell'd to pay by some Law.

All Property, indeed, except the Savage's temporary Cabin, his Bow, his Matchcoat, and other little Acquisitions, absolutely necessary for his Subsistence, seems to me to be the Creature of public Convention. Hence the Public has the Right of Regulating Descents, and all other Conveyances of Property, and even of limiting the Quantity and the Uses of it. All the Property that is necessary to a Man, for the Conservation of the Individual and the Propagation of the Species, is his natural Right, which none can justly deprive him of: But all Property superfluous to such purposes is the Property of the Publick, who, by their Laws, have created it, and who may therefore by other Laws dispose of it, whenever the Welfare of the Publick shall demand such Disposition. He that does not like civil Society on these Terms, let him retire and live among Savages. He can have no right to the benefits of Society, who will not pay his Club towards the Support of it.

You can't have a predatory lender without a reckless borrower. Just because someone will give you a loan doesn't mean you can really afford that house.

>Those companies failed because the web growth in developed nations started to falter and the web was no longer looking like a platform that was going to stick around. Then broadband penetration started to grow and the Web 2.0 revolution kicked off.

As someone who lived through those times as an adult, I don't think that's true.

My impression is that it was simply down to people realizing that "views" and "visits" didn't actually translate to any meaningful income. People were selling shit at huge losses under the assumption that the VAST potential market would end up paying off on the other end.

I can't begin to convey to younger people what it was like in 1999 - 2001ish. You'd stop at a sports bar for lunch and what would be on? Some cable financial channel showing stock tickers. Errybody was suddenly a day trader. One night I was at the gym. I overheard two bros chatting while on the recumbent bikes. "I just bought AOL at $100. I mean, it can only go up, right?" both of them laughed. The next day, I moved my 401k out of stocks and into bonds. A couple of months later, 9/11 happened.

"Irrational exuberance" is an understatement.

There's a certain saturation point for people inclined to purchase many items online, one which Amazon may be reaching in America. Its largest concern now are the markets it ignored or were ignorant of during its wind-up phase, already occupied by the likes of Baidu.

My point being? They're going to hit a plateau (if they haven't). They've gotten so used to constant, explosive year-over-year growth I'm not sure what the Hell they're going to do when they run out of track.

As a sidebar, our "broadband" is laughable, but it doesn't take much more than 5MBPS to have a satisfactory "modern" shopping experience online. The market in America is almost entirely saturated by individuals with that bandwidth or greater on mobile or desktop. Again, they can't rely on a geometric projection of existing trends. I won't say they're fucked or they'll inevitably crumble, but it's more likely they'll contract slightly or experience much smaller growth.

What decisions ? I don't give a shit what you do in your house.

I simply want to be left alone, in mine without people threatening with violence if I don't hand over my property to them.

The imagination of the statist is that if the state didn't exist no one would ever be safe, as though having a bunch of state sponsored thugs dispense 'justice' at the whim of the state is better. The reality is nothing is stopping soeone from breaking into your house and killing/robbing you right now apart from you. the police are not guarding you, they are chilling out eating donuts paid for with money that is taken from you under threat.

The state provides the illusion of security at great expense and you cannot opt out of it.
It is the opposite of freedom.

If you want to be part of a group that pools its resources to keep you safe then that is up to you, Statism threatens everyone with prison if they don't pay up and do as they are told.

I don't want to vote, you can get together with your buddies and vote about whatever you want. If you want a fucking road then you do it, if you want a sewage system then sort that out yourself, don't rope me into it. The state doesn't even ask people what they want, they do whatever they want and you can't do anything about it but imagine that your vote is somehow going to help you.

>You can't have a predatory lender without a reckless borrower.

That's only a small part of what was going on.

People were creating "financial derivative" packages. Supposedly blended debt packages. So, a bank might buy a package that's 80% A-rated mortgages, where they expect an almost guaranteed full payment over time. Then maybe 15% of B-rated, where the odds of default were a bit higher. Then 5% C-rated.

Except they actively engaged in fraud. They blatantly lied about the contents of these packages. Ratings companies misrepresented packages under review. Companies (like banks) buying these packages couldn't understand what they were really getting, because they purposely obfuscated them as much as possible. I can't stress this enough: blatant fraud was occurring.

They posted a profit this last quarter. I will note cynically this came shortly after The Stranger in Seattle posted the open question "Why are we giving so many breaks to a company that never posted a profit"?, and just in time to justify the huge towers they're building downtown.
>>
>>51746898
That fraud couldn't have occurred if nobody was buying what they were selling. The American consumer assumed "Oh, they're houses. Houses *never* decline in value! I can borrow as much as I can get, it's safe!" That breakdown in judgement is what lets frauds, pyramid schemes, and the like to work. Part of being a responsible consumer is to think "The guy I'm buying from is making money on this, else he wouldn't be selling to me. How's he doing that?" Caveat emptor.

The reason his account is called "realDonaldTrump" is because he let some internet troll take "DonaldTrump" so they could fuck with him.

>Ratings companies misrepresented packages under review
Technically they didn't. There is no misrepresentation because they straight up tell everyone that those ratings are flawed and you derive your own judgement, they are only a baseline they come up with.

Donald Trump, categorically, is a fascist. The picture isn't even an exaggeration, which is funny.

She hasn't said much about it in weeks. I can ask, but it's probably playing telephone.

I know this is an anonymous board and the saying goes "don't believe any of this is true", but this is serious -- word to the wise about Seattle: Don't ever, ever confront Jeff Bezos. He'll fucking bury you. He WILL blackball you. He WILL threaten to blackball anyone who gives you a good recommendation. Howard Schultz at Starbucks might IGNORE you, but he doesn't take personal offense and often welcomes criticism of a certain strip. His toadies will get offended on his behalf. "Seattle freeze" can seem friendly, but it's a lot of hurt feelings that YOU would besmirch Dear Leader.

As for Google Seattle, all you really need is the requisite ego, a doctorate, and at least three major open source projects -- well, to be considered. You need luck to be chosen, minority or no. No life and a lot of "free" time helps.

PS - if anyone tell you Google Maps is for "the best of the best", that's not true. The best of the product was written before the buyout.

That's what's so exciting about Trump, he's an outsider. I mean, he really can't do any worse than any of the last few presidents, can he?

*certain stripe, sorry.

Seattle is a strange place to be in tech right now. The Amazon interns complain so much in public about simple tasks I'm starting to hate twenty-somethings, and AM one.

What? I don't get what you mean by this. But holy shit this is fascinating. You should write fanfiction about Jeff Bezos. Tell me more if you have got it, any kind of juicy gossip will do about any of the companies.

So you are pro-muslim ? Because a world leader that is anti-muslim sounds fucking great to me.

You can go live in a sharia shithole if you love them so much.

No Bernie = no vote.

Not gonna waste my time or be a part of this shit show. Doesn't matter who wins. Congress is controlled by GOP so neither trump nor shillary will be able to get anything done.

I'm happy with my life, you're not. Scapegoating a group of people who you don't interact with on a day-to-day basis isn't a good solution to that.

If you want to see what a semi-retarded islamophobe can do just look at what Jindal did to Louisiana.

The president doesn't really have as much power has you'd think. Sure, he can make executive orders and veto bills and put justices on the Supreme court, but every single bill that passes to him has to be voted on by the Senate and House of Representatives, and even if he decides to veto, it can be overridden. The president is mostly a figurehead, he's there to take the blame when something goes wrong and reap the rewards when something goes right, even if they have nothing to do with him.

>I don't think I've ever heard a single positive thing anywhere from anyone claiming to work for Amazon

One of my coworkers went to work for Amazon a few years ago. Really bright guy, had a great future ahead of him it seemed. I just found out this past week that he committed suicide. Work was taking up his whole life and apparently his girlfriend left him because of workplace demands, and he just got caught in a downward spiral. Apparently he was talking a lot about how horrible his job in the few months before offing himself.

Personally, if I had a shitty job, I'd just quit.

I interact with Muslims 6 days a week.

They destroy the bathrooms with their feet washing and shit. They get like 6 15 minute paid breaks every day just to "pray" (after which they sit in the break room and talk). They are loud and smelly as fuck. They can't speak English worth a shit.

There's more I'm forgetting I'm sure, but that's just something to think about. The whites and even ghetto niggers I work with are so much better.

No, I'm against. I'll vote for Trump if it's possible.
