I've been researching wireless routers and I've concluded all consumer models are shit, and designed to fail in 1-2 years. I think I'm going to try putting together a setup using separate components from Ubiquity, which sells enterprise-level systems, but which are actually pretty reasonably priced for the lower end gear.

On that note, is it a good idea to buy a separate modem, router, firewall, switch, access point or get one of those all-in-one solutions? Space and money not being the issue.

can I pfsense that thing?

I'd recommend doing this if you have the knowledge to set it up. I use a Mikrotik RB2011 and a Ubiquiti Unifi AC pro. Been flawless since I set it up last year.

DIR-825 from 2008 running DD-WRT
handles an average of 500+GBs of bandwidth a month over FTTB.

Don't see myself upgrading till AC wave 2 series routers become the norm.

I've got this thing running pfSense as a router/firewall/local DNS/PXE box. Switching duties are handled by real switches (8-port near the router and modem, 24-port in the office), and wifi is a wrt320n in dumb AP mode with DDWRT.

No. Mikrotik primarily want to sell RouterOS and have people invest in that ecosystem. They want people to spend time learning RouterOS so they'll buy a higher license when they hit a wal. It isn't malicious - there's nothing stopping people from porting pfsense. But they [Mikrotik] have no reason to do it, and one big reason not to do it.

I use the same as this guy. I was running VyOS on it for a short period, but the IPv6 configuration with my PPPoE connection wasn't easy, and would sometimes just fail to get an address. I could have figured it out, I'm sure - but pfsense provided me a single checkbox, so I stuck with that.

I was actually using a Ubiquiti Edgerouter Lite before that. But an issue with DNS bugged me, and their weird reluctance to comply with the GPL was the final nail in that coffin.

I installed one of these at my office recently. It was supposed to be a quickfix until we got a replacement but its been there for a month with no hickups.

Separate is good. A separate switch in particular will allow you to get much faster throughput with wired devices.
