Speaking as an i7 4790k owner, yes, its your best choice.
No point going skylake. Definitely not Broadwell.
Haswell Refresh is best price:performance for high end Intel CPU's.
If you're only gaming, i5 is more than satisfactory.
>>
>>51712508
i'd say get skylake if they weren't shit but i still don't really recommend getting older generation processors. 5th generation i7s just werks

are you going to need 8 Gb GPU ? the performance is almost the same but you need to look in future and pick the right one. i dont know much about the r9 390 but at 1080p both cards are the same i guess.
>>

Speaking of crappy i5's. I'm not that knowledgeable about CPU's.

I have a i5 750 @ 2.67GHz.
How low end is it? It's using a really fucked up socket so I want to avoid upgrading for as long as I can.

I haven't really run into any problems with it. I can play any game I want with no issues and all the other applications I use don't tend to rely on it all to much.
>>
>>51715821
you can overclock on the Z97P-D3 but i dont know the differences between the Z97P-D3 and the z170-ar.
you need to look it up by yourself.
i got the Z97P-D3 around 100euro,
here is everything you need to know about her
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4958#ov
>>
>>51715821
also i5-6600K has FCLGA1151 you need to find a motherboard with FCLGA1151 socket.
>>
>>51715857
>i dont know the differences between the Z97P-D3 and the z170-ar.

um..z97 is a haswell socket.
z170 is a skylake socket.

huge diff.
>>

>>
>>51715953
you mean the Z97P or the z170 ? i think both mobos are great anyway. it depends on what cpu you want to install.
>>
6600k or 4690k doesnt really bother me to be honest, i just want a rig that will hit 60+ fps on most games and can do a bit of photoshop and vid editing
>>
>>51713197

>>
>>51716062

The 6600k is worth $250'ish.

For only 4 cores vs 8 virtual cores of 4790k ($250)

Don't fall for the skymeme that hard.
>>
>>51716007
6600k is newer technology. both cpus are great and you will have no problems on games/photoshop.
just get a beast GPU like r9 390 and you will play games like a charm for many years imo at 1080p.
just make sure that the sockets are match
>>
>>51716106
i7-4790k = 350$.
i5-6600k = 290$.
for games/photoshop there is no reason for i7-4790k imo. the fps are the same.
>>
in the US, you can get the 4790k for $250 at microcenter. But if you're hooked to newegg and don't care about the hard-core video editing/3d rendering, then yea, 6600k is the better choice.

You might be fine with just integrated graphics, benchmarks with intel graphics 530 show people getting 60+ fps on those games.

If you want to play something newer, you could always shell out for a GPU later on, while if you buy a GPU now and don't play anything that actually requires it you'll lose money.

I've got a 7950 I bought for mining dogecoin almost 2 years ago, I haven't played anything that has actually required it besides ffxiv.

I have an i5 2500k and it'll play Fallout 4 and any other game I want. I think your graphics card plays a bigger role in what you can and can't play, assuming your CPU has a memory controller on it and has more than 2 cores.

40+ fps on high (1920x1080)

although most people play on low, see >>51721542

lol and dota are even less demanding, so 60+ fps on max settings with those

hell, even the intel 530 manages 20-25 fps on FO4 which is notorious for being horribly optimized

The i34170 is more than enough.

The "i5 is needed for gaming" is generally a meme. Very few games are well programmed to utilize 4 cores of cpu with the hyperthreading anyway.

Look at the tests done. Even a game like Witcher 3 has no fps noticeable fps gain with a i3 vs i5.

A lot of people will tell you to get i5 but don't believe them. They're just repeating an unchallenged notion.

I laugh at people who say their overclocked 2500k is still good for gaming. My 2500k @ 4.5Ghz fails in comparison to a 6700k in gaming. I watch youtube videos of people playing games that I play with the same GPU (980 ti) and get a ton more fps.

For example-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rg5Jvn92LU

His fps never drop below 130 and stay in the higher 100s the entire time. While me and my 2500k are sitting between 100 ~ 144 ish. I have to use DSR to from 1080p to 1440p just to get MORE fps. I can't wait to buy a 6700k when the prices drop back down. And yes my 980 Ti is overclocked to 1520.

6600k if you're the type that will (hope to) upgrade your system in the future.

4690k if immediate pice/performance is more important.

Personally I don't upgrade my systems - I build a full system and then in 3-5 years I just replace the whole thing. I feel like upgrading single parts isn't as cost effective over time. Therefore, the system I just built is using a 4690k.
