What meme? The "ssds are a meme" meme?
>>
>>51710449
the purpose of a hard drive is to store software and data because it will not all fit in RAM. hard drives transfer that data to RAM so it can be accessed and used. the faster this transfer can happen, the faster your computer will respond to your commands. if you can have a 5 times faster hard drive, why not?

the SSD gimmick is almost as bad as the dedicated graphic card gimmick.
You don't need anything other than integrated graphics to drive the monitor.
>>
I bought one. Comes in 5 days. Gonna put it in my laptop
>>
>>51710684
I agree completely. Same with what is in the monitor. Why did we ever leave CRT monitors? I mean all it needs to do is show a picture. Why did we ever invest time and effort making LCD/LED?

Is this a joke family? My computer is so much faster at loading shit since I got an SSD

Honestly the 10 sec saved during start up makes it worth it
>>
>>51710761
yea. nah. You can keep that shit.
>>51710765
Honestly if RAM hadn't become so abundant and so cheap, developers for games and applications would have to code their shit better to be less RAM instensive. Both system and GPU RAM.

Now it is common for a single AAA game to use 6gb system ram and 5gb Vram. Or 2 tabs in a fully updated browser to use 1.5gb
>>
>>51710765

>>
Boot times literally do not matter
>>
>>51710978
they're just a bonus. The whole system responds faster. Games and any application you install on an ssd load in seconds.

If you've ever played AAA titles, loaded up CAD software, or worked extensively in Photoshop, you'd notice the difference. If all you do is jerk off and shit post on 4chins, then no. SSDs are lost on you.
>>
>>51710996
The difference in Photoshop is really phenomenal. Working with a single image can produce multiple gigabytes of temporary data which can definitely bog down a machine after a few hours.

But if you're just cranking out rare pepes and putting dicks on women you probably wouldn't notice

I got an SSD and I fucking hate it.
I used wake up every morning and turn on my computer and start jacking off, and by the time it was booted up and ready to browse dank memes on 4chan I had already ejaculated.
Ever since I got my SSD I can't do this because I can't finish in 7 seconds, my life is hell.

Average SSD prices
>2007: $100/GB
>2008: $30/GB
>2009: $10/GB
>2010: $3/GB
>2011: $2/GB
>2012: $1/GB
>2013: $0.7/GB
>2014: $0.5/GB
>2015: $0.35/GB
>2015 BF/CM sales: $0.25/GB

It might take 2-3 more years, but HDDs are going to be obsolete as a purchase.
>>
>>51711130

are ssds as reliable as HDD's in the long term? And what about recovery? Is it even possible to recover files from a failed flash based drive? And how about the opposite? Can you completely securely wipe an SSD?

Only thing stopping me from going full SSD in my PCs are these reasons.
>>
>>51711215
>Can you completely securely wipe an SSD?

What are you hiding?
>>
>>51711235
>embarrassing porn.

Realistically I have documents in plain text that contain passwords for my various emails, accounts, bank info. Personal finances etc. These all reside in an encrypted container, I'm just paranoid that If I ever retire and sell an SSD for whatever reason, NOTHING can be retrieved.

>last thing I need is some sick fuck getting pictures of me and my family's vacation or some shit.
>>
>>51711215
You could eat them whole and then never shit again.

I want to buy a 1tb 850 EVO.

I could get it for 260 euros.

Mostly would store music, and games to it that I'd play from time to time.

For comparison WD Red 1TB costs 80 euros here (already got 3tb one)
>>
>>51711215
>are ssds as reliable as HDD's in the long term?
Yes but it does not matter. No medium is 100% safe. BACKUPS.
>And what about recovery? Is it even possible to recover files from a failed flash based drive?
You are not going to pay $5000 for data recovery anyway. BACKUPS.
>And how about the opposite? Can you completely securely wipe an SSD?
Full disk encryption is basically free nowadays that CPUs have hardware AES encryption
>>
>>51711376
how the fuck is a 1TB 850 EVO ssd so cheap for you? 260 fake Euro dollars is $283 USD.

Here in the real world that same ssd is $350.

Meanwhile I can get a WD color of my choice 1TB for $40-$50.
>>
>>51711407
Not him but it was on sale during Amazon's last sale in Europe
>>
>>51711407
I take it 260 euros for 1tb 850 evo is good then?
>>
I'm a poorfag too Op
It'll be okay.
>>
>>51711398
Safe meaning good so I'm not swapping out ssds every 6 months because they keep dying. I have a RAID 10 setup and dedicated 4TB External for backups.

I don't care about recovering my data, but Keeping a failed or bad ssd around is just a waste of space. So If I were to throw it away is there a risk of anyone else recovering my data off of it.

You're right about AES hardware based encryption though.

Recovery only interests me as far as SOMEONE ELSE recovering my data.

why the fuck would you buy a used ssd
>>
Is 5400rpm HDD really that bad? It's included with most laptops.
>>
>>51711485
some people do. Don't ask me why. I rank buying used drives up there with buying used motherboards. I don't do it because too much shit could be wrong with it. But there are situations where I guess it makes sense.

>Have first gen OCZ 64gb SSD
>No longer large enough for my needs
>CrystalDisk says the drive is fine and still working

Sold to a co-worker for $35 Which I put towards my new 120gb Samsung 840 ssd I have now.

Co-worker got an SSD that He knows works for $40 less than brand new. It was only after selling it to him that the concern of someone else recovering my data came to mind. Granted he is a friend and doesn't even know how to recover data, but still.

I don't sell my drives anymore but I do throw ancient and defective ones away. Otherwise I'd have like stacks of drives in my closet.
>>
>>51711547
for basic use? It'll do the job. It is in most laptops because it is cheaper than the 7,200 rpm drives and does use a little less power, thus longer battery for the laptop.

>Just get an SSD.
>>
>>51711547
You can get a kingston v300 for 50$ right now thats 120gb ssd which will be gazilion times faster in every single type of use. How much is your time worth to you?

Honestly, I wanted to wait until SSDs dropped to $200, but it was getting increasingly obvious that mSATA is being phased out in favor of M.2, so price drops on mSATA isn't going to happen anymore.
