Laptop, but aside from that the graphics card is fine, when it's actually working there are no issues and the temp isn't remotely high. there is a weird thing where if I push down on the case where the card is located it will freak out visually and just turn off.

"It can't be the graphics card, sometimes it works!"
>>
>>51705279
Yeah I know how it sounds. It doesn't always crash like this though sometimes it's normal and others it's just a shutdown and extra cooling of the graphics card hasn't prevented any crashes so I'm not convinced it's as simple as just the graphics card.

correct; graphics cards and GPUs are not the same thing
>>

Is it the Intel shit onboard graphics, or an Nvidia or AMD GPU?
>>

I see, I don't think I have a graphics card then, what do they look like?
>>
>>51705734
Nvidia, I replaced the thermal paste and adjusted the settings on the GPU so it was as cool as possible but it didn't help.
>>
>>51705789
they have GPUs on them, and are removable. Some laptops have them, 99.9% do not

>>51705825
>I replaced the thermal paste
if you did this poorly you can make things worse

> adjusted the settings on the GPU so it was as cool as possible
what temps are you getting, on both your CPU and GPU?
>>
Where do we go from here, now that all of the children are growin up, and how will we spend our lives, now that there's no one to lend us a hand
>>
>>51705850
I probably did a mediocre job. CPU is usually 30-40C, GPU is usually 20-30C
>>
>>51705940
what thermal paste did you use?
>>
>>51705959
Arctic Silver, I've got plenty left.
>>
Replacing the main board is the only solution
>>
>>51705992

thats electrically conductive and if you shorted out any of the tiny resistors on the GPU it would cause horrible things to happen

>>
>>51706078
I was worried about that, are you sure though they made a point of saying it wasn't electrically conductive. I don't think there are any shorts though, I replaced it months ago and there hasn't been any difference from before I replaced it.
>>
>>51706155
>they made a point of saying it wasn't electrically conductive
you sure you didnt mis-read?
can you enter your BIOS?

Yes but sometimes it crashes in BIOS. Currently though it doesn't start when I turn it on, it just sits there.

>>
>>51705825
Temperatures are not indicative od problems with hardware. Things like bluescreens and video corruption are.
You are getting both, your temps may be fine but your graphics chip is fucking fucked.

How old is your laptop? Did you get it new?
>>
>>51706373
I get that one, system service exception, and IRLQ not less or equal.

motherboard replacement

theyre $300+ OBO on eBay. Maybe you can get an offer of $200 accepted, maybe even less
>>
>>51706526
There is a potential that the chip itself is fine but corrosion on the board is causing it.
Toss the mainboard in an ultrasonic cleaner, not a jewelery cleaner though.
Or send it to Louis Rossman.
Or >>51706555
>>
>>51706555
how standard are motherboards, will i have to search hard to find one that works for me or will it be relatively simple

what about a laboratory sonicator?
>>
>>51706663
I don't know, compare it to the specs of proper cleaners.
Jewelery cleaners are too rough and can tears caps off the board.
>>
>>51706691
so I'm trying to get just shit that's builtup off my motherboard, would soaking it in a polar, aprotic solvent also be helpful?

W530 owner since 2012 here
You could probably get away with installing a T530 board. The bezel is made to match the W and T series.
Having said that, I don't think you would enjoy a T series masquerading as a W series and you would probably miss having a real GPU, not to mention having to potentially reinstall your OS since the entire hardware configuration would have changed.
>>
>>51709992
>probably miss having a real GPU
Nvidia GPUs in laptops are horrible
In a laptop, I personally prefer not to have a dedicated GPU
>>
>>51709992
I may try some other stuff first. I can get it to briefly work by forcibly drying it with a vacuum or fan beforehand. I'm gonna experiment with ways of cleaning shit off of the inside before I go to replacing it.
>>
>>51710038
Nah. Optimus is fine. Ran fine on every Windows since 7', since 2012. Ran fine on Fedora Linux with Bumblebee installed.
They're OK.
I have the Quadro K2000M.
The most I could complain about is selectively activating the GPU for applications in Linux being a pain in the ass.
But that's a software issue.
>>
techfag here.
It's either video card or RAM. Try exchanging each.

>>51711310
I actually like took out the RAM yesterday and sort of clean it out with a fan and I think it got worse when I put it back in

>>
>>51711377
cleaned it with a fan O_o? Well that's strange. Hopefully you didn't damage anything. But if you can, try to see if you have the same issue with only 1 stick of RAM in the laptop. Try to narrow it down to which stick of RAM may be faulty.

Also, there's sometimes additional ram under the keyboard.

Not sure of your laptop model, just saying it's possible.

there are RAM sticks under the keybaord by the way this will take forever. A fan and some tweezers because there was like particulate things everywhere. I got past the login screen so I'm sure everything is fine other than the thing that was originally not working

Reballing is NOT repair!

When it comes to BGA graphics chips with a flip chip design, to reball is IDIOCY - the chip itself is dead on the inside. Heating it up causes it to work again for a temporary period of time before it eventually dies again. You can prove that the problem is not in the balls very simply by heating your chip up to 120c for ten minutes, you will see that it often works again for a short period. 120c cannot melt solder, which is proof that the issue is in the bumps of the chip, NOT the solder balls.

This is a SILLY MYTH perpetrated by people who WANT IT TO BE TRUE because believing in the myth makes their life easier, but it is a myth nonetheless.
