Both are shit, get a macbook air and install windows on it.
My old Samsung which I use for web browsing and watching Youtube videos, general time wasting, is now getting a bit shabby.
Seeing the new Macbook in that rose gold finish looked amazing and even though it's lacking ports and the mobile processor is there instead of a proper one is a downer, all I do on my laptop is browse, so it's redundant and I was looking at the Macbook air but it doesn't have a retina display which the Macbook does.
So i'm leaning towards that but then the sensible person in me sees the Macbook Pro and knows it's the best option as it's got all the ports, better processor and graphics card but the guy inside me (the heart) sees the slick look, the feather weight, the screen and the size of it and it just wins me over.

My Surface 3 runs Windows 10. Scaling is generously "hit or miss".
I also wasn't aware that the Surface Book offered decent Linux support. If you were going to insist on a *nix distribution, the MBP line is obviously the better contender anyway; far more people use it, far more effort goes into hardware compatibility for that narrower hardware profile since there are more people on it, etc...

A laptop that can decently run games is more useful than you think if you have a desktop too. A lot of Steam games have cloud saves... So I'll often be playing on my desktop, then when I go to bed I'll fire up the game right where I left off, albeit I need a controller while laying in bed.
Also sometimes I feel like throwing it on the big TV just to chill in the living room. Faster to set up the laptop than the desktop.
If you're bent on a Mac laptop and you've got the budget for a Macbook Pro, get the Pro.

Depends on what you are trying to do with it. If you want to develop apps, make music, or edit images, then get the pro. If you just want a general laptop, then don't waste your money on a craptop and get a good one for the same price. You can get Lenovo Ultrabooks for pretty cheap or if you want to splurge, I would go with the Windows equivalent of macbooks and get a Razer Blade.
