First update your system, install the restricted extras (includes codecs, microsoft's fonts and other things ), then make sure to install the full language support.
Install unity tweak tool:
Choose a theme and icons that suits you, for example:
>http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2015/06/arc-gtk-theme
>http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/FlatStudio?content=154296
If you have an android phone you can install kdeconnect:
Install steam and get some games if you want (make sure to install the necessary 32-bit libraries if necessary):
Install some emulators like dolphin if you want:
get a good clipboard manager:
You can install a drop down terminal like guake which i find more comfy:

-oh. Well, enjoy your shitty half-baked inconsistent buggy OS, then. And being stuck with free software of extremely variable quality.
I used it for nearly a year because I pretty much had to (the reason is quite amusing but this isn't my blog so I won't elaborate), and ran screaming to a better OS as soon as possible.
(By the way, Ubuntu isn't worse than any of the other distros. It's probably the least bad, actually. It's just that all of desktop Linux is complete unmitigable shit.)

and then it went downhill fast.
OP, don't sink to this level at any point. Let morons use Toys'R'OS. You seem to think the same way already but it's still important to warn you. Just use your Ubuntu and keep Unity while you figure out if you like it or not. You can change anything at any point so there's no rush to do it immediately.

I thought it was implied that if you're installing OS X, then you're making a Hackintosh and that's more complicated than Ubuntu.
