Do cheap SSDs worthy?
I was wondering if those inexpensive drives are shit or if they could be a good option for a budget.
>>
>>51692086
Cheap SSDs are shit and will only last you a couple years at best before they start deteriorating. Buy the samshills, they're genuine quality.
>>
>>51692086
Nope, they're trash. Stick with Samsung, Crucial, or Intel if you want to support the Jew.

It depends on a lot of stuff. MLC or modern TLC based drives should mostly be fine, even the slower ones, if coming from an HDD. Past that a lot of it is likely to be luck - I've read that some of the Patriot SSDs for instance just flat out fail within a few hours.
>>
Sandisk for cheap drive. Go Samsung or Intel for the more expensive ones.
>>51692103
As he said, it'll be a temp year or two drive.
>>
>>51692111
This, stick with those three brands (in that order too) and you can't really go wrong.
>>
>>51692086
Kingston pulled a bait and switch by sending SSDs with good controllers to reviewers and then switching to garbage cheap controllers for mass production.
And then they tried to hide this fact by grinding off the serial numbers.
Stick with sandisk if you want cheap SSD.
Just be aware that at these price ranges, a much better brand can be had for only $10 more.

I've been using a super cheap silicon power 32gb ssd for the last 6 months
It's not particularly fast as you see high end ssd reviews claim. But it still has a noticeable difference between HDD when booting.
I only bought it because my older hdd died and I didn't want to use a green hdd to run my os on.
So I got the cheapest ssd I could find.

The only difference I notice with my SSD is that the OS loads quicker and I can run any program right away. It sucks that thumbnails don't load right away.

To answer your question though, yes it's a good SSD. 850 EVO is the SATA SSD to get, anything better - like the 850 PRO - is only a tiny difference in performance for a significantly bigger price tag.

depends what you're doing with it -- you get what you pay for

I have a kingston like OPs inside an older macbook pro for my girlfriend. it sped it up enough that she didn't want a new one. battery life is also improved.

then I fixed her ancient black macbook with a chinese-made "kingspec" drive and installed linux on it. super fast and running great again.

both are going strong a few months later. cost less than $100 total.

great for occasional use on an ancient laptop.

but if I was depending on these for a real computer, I would only use them if (1) I had good backups on a raid array / cloud storage or (2) I had at least 2 name-brand SSDs in a raid array mirror or something. BACK UP YOUR SHIT.

right, that's what I'm saying -- don't use SSDs for something you can't easily replace.

in the case of a laptop, you need to backup your shit unless you have room for 2 HDDs and one is a standard HDD for your data.

>>51692086

I have an 120GB OCZ Vertex III (I think, maybe II?) that I used as a primary in my desktop, then moved it to my laptop when I "upgraded" to a 250GB Samsung 840 EVO.

Six months later, the Samsung was a horrendously slow piece of shit. The OCZ Vertex is still blazing along like new.

I replaced the shit Samsung with a SanDisk Extreme Pro 480GB and now use the Samsung as a scratch drive for torrents.
>>
>>51693969
>don't use SSDs for something you can't easily replace.

Uh. Current SSDs will probably outlast current hard disks.

Always make backups, no matter what. Preferably on a set of external drives that you swap out regularly.

But none of us actually do that, do we?
>>
>>51694039

diminishing returns

you can't buy a 2-3TB SSD without dropping major cash (and the bigger SSDs coming out are still untested new tech)... so for storage that doesn't need to be fast but needs to be dependable, you can get a standard drive.

>>
>>51694058
This, just store your backup on a Hard Drive.

If your SSD fails you don't need another SSD to write your data to a new SSD. If the backup drive fails, a new Hard Drive for backup will be stupid cheap.
>>
>>51694075
>I also have a raid stripe-mirror,

Like that's going to help.

If one of your drives fails before you replace it for being obsolete, then most likely the cause of failure will be excessive heat. And if one drive overheats, guess what? Odds are the others do, too.

Mention of a RAID setup doesn't even belong in the same post as commentary on backing up data.

as someone who used to run a RAID5 in my desktop, this is completely true

RAID is fantastic for avoiding data loss when it needs to be constantly backed up, like databases, but is not worth it, or really even useful, for keeping a media collection backed up

HDTune is accurate though.
Crystaldisk and Samsung benchmark showed no problems and put up 500 MB/s speeds when my Samshits were actually chugging along 5MB/s

At this point SSD speed generally saturates, or close to saturates SATA III, so as long as your drive has:
450+MB/s sustained read/write
10k+ IOPS read (40k QD32)
30k+ IOPS write (60k QD32),
you're pretty much just buying based on price/GB or write endurance.

and afaik samsung have both of those cornered atm due to their v-meme shit

that said depending on how much you use it, even getting a cheaper drive might be an option, if the speeds are fast enough
>>
>>51697416
Only if you are copying dozens of gigs of video data to/from it all day erryday. For most use, the thing that makes the huge difference is the near-zero random seek latency and this will be excellent even on low end drives.

I'm hackintoshing on a 240 GB Sandisk SSD plus, cheap (even cheaper on black Friday) and makes for a really fucking fast and responsive system.

Sequential speeds are the only thing HDDs are good at. The whole point of using an SSD for OS and programs is the great access times because you don't have to wait for moving parts.
