If you import a phone from another country because it's cheaper than buying the local version, do you still get OTA updates for Android from your carrier, or do you need to manually update?
>>
What the fuck is wrong with my phone, this is the second time this messaging app has fucked up and the only solution I found last time was a complete wipe. I can't reinstall it because it's a motorola default. Force stopping it works temporarily, as other services keep starting it back up again. The app itself is also very laggy the longer it's kept open for.

Moto G, android 5.1

Tried googling and I couldn't find anything.

im from /diy/ dont hate on me too much
im considering an itx build and i am confused on whether or not i can use an M2 PCIE drive as a boot drive.
The board is asus z170l pro gaming and i want to use the samsung 950 pro drive.
will this setup work?
also will using an PCIE M2 drive affect video card performance significantly?

no, it will only affect the time it takes to load textures, a normal ssd is already fast enough. m2 is the future, but right now it's not really needed unless you want a 4 second boot instead of a 8 second boot.

I know right.
I'd assume that Turbo Boost works as it's supposed to and the CPU is effectively running at the 4.52Ghz shown in Task Manager, but it's really strange how cpu-z disagrees.

My want is for small form factor rather than crazy speed. but the speed is nice.

>>51683181
>i dont see how m2 would impact gpu performance. what makes you think so?
from my googling, it seems the m2 drive shares bandwidth of the pcie express bus, and using the m2 will derate the x16 primary slot to x8, is this not correct?
>>
>>51683235
>using the m2 will derate the x16 primary slot to x8, is this not correct?
Should not be correct unless you have a weird motherboard.
It's true that M.2 shares the PCI-e bus, as it's a PCI-e connection, but the Z170 chipset has 20 PCI-e 3.0 lanes, of which your graphics card wants 16 and your 950 PRO wants 4.

You got fucked by ransomware, and the longer you spend using that computer the more files are being encrypted.
If you want any chance at being able to back your shit up before your files are gone for good, you turn your computer off right the fuck now, go make a live USB with some Linux distro, boot up on it, and hope that the ransomware doesn't do its thing while you're in the live USB environment.

Solutions are as following:
1) Pay up
2) Format
3) Unplug HDD and never use it again until someone cracks the encryption

About the Google botnet...

So I use an android phone, I have a gmail account and I search using Google. I'm not comfortable with how creepy it gets sometimes, though. I use Lightning browser on my phone and Chromium on my Mint laptop, not signed-in.

Posted this over in the Speccy thread. Not trying to suck dick for answers, but I'm getting some major slowdown on certain games (Fallout 4, XCOM:EW, Homeworld, hell even Banner Saga). I might have buttery smooth 60fps for all of 5~10 seconds and then 15fps for a split second, rinse repeat. It's very frustrating.

Just curious about what /g/ thinks, temp definitely, but I wondered if anybody else might spot something. This is a couple of minutes after closing Fallout. It was in the 200F range while playing.

I'm relocating my compter and the ethernet cable I currently have is not quite long enough. Because of how it is wired, it would be a hassle to simply replace it fully with a longer one. The obvious choice would be an extension cable of some kind that adds the extra metre I need. We're talking cable that runs from the router over a distance of maybe 4m, nothing excessive. The internet connection in question is gigabit per second (which I actually get and use) and it is a fibre connection, though FTTC.

Note that I have to increase the length of the cable, and I am asking about the difference between say a 5m wired (because that's probably the closest size option) and a 3m cable connected to a 1.5m connector.

Intuitively, I'd imagine that the version with the extension cable might be slightly worse but probably not noticeably. All things being equal, will I see any noticeable drop in performance, particularly maximum up/down speed or ping in online gaming? Are there any considerations to bear in mind about the quality of the extension? Am I going to see any other electrical artefacts from the connector?

All Google searches talk about is extensions that run from telephione lines to routers or massive length cables.

When i had an issue like this it turned out to be some sort of weird power-saving feature (AMD Firepro notebook graphics). There was a tick box for "additional powersaving when idle" in CCC. Best i can tell is it ramped up voltages and Clocks based on a powersave scheduler. The instant it would drop below 50% Utilization in any game or program it would drop a clock/voltage state causing massive lag for a few frames before the voltage went back up.

Maybe Nvidia has something similar?

Okay so I bought these (pic related) they work great, so i decided to buy another set for my Xbox (the first set is connected to my router and laptop, the second set connected to my router and Xbox)

For some strange reason when i have both sets on at the same time my connection drops from a 100meg to around 0.1meg, and my internet cuts out with the error

The two plugs connected at the routers end are in the same sockets next to each other and the two upstairs connected to my laptop and Xbox are switched into two different sockets in my room. Also all 4 sometimes work together but most of the time they don't

Wrong. Just because you can install an M.2 drive does not guarantee that you can use it as a boot drive. Just ask anyone who tried to use an XP941, SM951, and early versions M.2 PCIe2 2x SSDs as boot drives (such as myself).

Your motherboard's BIOS will largely affect whether or not you can use certain M.2 SSDs as boot drives. As far as I know, most Z97 and H97 boards still can't use XP941 and SM951 as a boot drives because their firmware doesn't natively support it.

Let me try again.
My laptop suddenly got REALLY hot and the fan went wild, then it bluescreened. I think I fixed the cause and it seems to work okay, except it runs a bit warm now and the fan runs a bit more. But not to a scary extent. Honestly, shit's nice. It's cold here.
But do you have any idea what could have happened during the overheating that would cause the computer to keep running warmer? Fan failure? Cooling paste maybe? Some kind of damage to the CPU?
I can't imagine the CPU would get damaged in a way that would only result in warmth. Could it? And the fan still seems to do its job, the job's just harder. As for the paste, well, I know roughly fuck all about paste.
>>
>>51685507

dont. codec packs are for retards that download shitty files from shitty encoders with shitty codecs.

overheating can cause damage to the cpu and make it throw an error randomly at any time which could result in anything from a slight FPS drop to a bluescreen of death.

There was nothing important on it (just some games and porn, the former of which were backed up) so I'm not pulling my hair out or anything, but it would be nice if I could copy some torrents I was seeding off of it.

My question is, what do you guys think about the supposed freezer trick?

For additional information, it's not even showing up in Windows or the drive manager anymore (haven't checked the BIOS yet). Anytime you boot the computer, you can hear a distinct clicking as it tries to spin up and eventually fails, at which point the boot process moves on without it. I think it's beyond any software repair, thus.

It's installed internally, but I think it's causing some system instability issues as I've had a couple blue screens since it failed. I'm gonna pull it out soon.

Pardon the tech support question, but I'm trying to git better at diagnosing PC's. I recently received a junker Dell Win7 computer and the guy who gave it complained that "it'd turn off a lot and take days to turn back on."

Sure enough, after about 10 minutes of staying on, it blacked out, no BSOD. Unplugged PSU, then back in, but nothing happens upon pressing the power button. Motherboard power light would turn on, and the power button light (to turn the PC on) on the front lights up orange.

All the PSU cords were plugged in firmly, nothing burned/frayed/broken inside. No multimeter to use, and replacing the RAM/testing each stick didn't change anything. Took off CPU fan, and the thermal paste is nearly gone. I don't have another PSU or CPU that's compatible for testing, either

I'm leaning towards the CPU fried/died, or the PSU is going bad, but can really only afford to replace one. Any thoughts on what I should do/test/replace at this point?

I haven't but I might try that worst case, never tried crossing jumpers before though I've read about it.

>>51687143
Tried various RAM formations, nothing. There's no PCI's, but I'll try the rest.

If I plug a controller into an xbox via USB whilst it's already on, would it use more energy?
Would it take more power from the mains or would it just use the power already in the xbox
What is the average amount of energy needed to power a usb port?

So /g/, I built myself a router a while back and I've been using a 320 watt PSU to power it. When I checked it with a kill-a-watt, it was only drawing like 14 watts, so I got a picoPSU 80w and I was planning on re-purposing the 320 for a NAS. But when I opened it up, the power connector is missing 4 of the pins. It's too short. I tried plugging it in on one side and booting it up anyway, and to my surprise, it booted up just fine.

My question is, is it OK like this? Or is this going to cause me issues if I don't return the thing and get a longer one (do they even make a longer one?)

My boss uses an i7 920 with only 4 of 8 pins in, i guess it's fine for a light load.

I got 2 computers. One client running Win 10, and other server running Windows Server 2012 R2.

I want to route all traffic of my client computer through my server. How do I do it?
I know I have to use VPN, but which one? Is there a free one that is also easy to setup?

/g/ im looking for something like a good 5.25 front bay reader like pic related, but also looking for a reason why you would need a fucking sim card reader on one in the 1st place.

Sim card readers where handy because it allowed you to read/write contact information.

I'm sure you could go with some Microsoft option, but I suggest OpenVPN (the free, community edition). Its the most popular free VPN software.

re-install a slightly old version and wait for it to update.
>>

if your os/recovery allows it, find the official gapps for your os version and install from recovery.

I need a program to write a newspaper. Is word enough for it?
I just need the classical newspaper structure, with pictures and a lot of space to write in..

malwarebytes is great, but don't buy it. Just run the free version manually from time to time. AV is only needed if: you are illiterate to windows/someone else that uses your pc is/it's a pirate, old version of Windows without updates/you can't or won't use Windows Defender.

I currently have a HD5450. Is a R7 240 a viable upgrade from it, or I have to "go further" to be able to "feel" that I upgraded my GPU?

I recently upgraded my system from Core2 E8500 3GB RAM -> FX4300 5GB RAM, and I think now my old VGA card is bottlenecking me.

Word and LO Writer have preset column configs to make newspaper-like pages. Just play a little with it until you find the right one.
>>
>>51686853
you dont have to flip the fan around so it blows the other way around if you put it on the other side of the heatsink. make it a pull config.
and next time dont buy ram with huge heatsinks.

>>51686880
you shouldnt have to unless the case forces you to mount the mobo 90 degree rotated.

imagine you mounted the mobo in a normal case and attached the cpu cooler so you get airflow straight through the case. now lay down the case flat on it's side. that should be how your case looks (basically) except a lot smaller.

>>51687007
pic for you

>>51687080
theoretically yes. just make sure you plug in the power for the correct cpu.
check manual if it's possible to run with only 1 cpu installed.

>>51687121
it's always good to have something running and catching stuff in real time.

>>51687242
>Tried various RAM formations
no, remove all sticks except one. try that stick in each slot on the mobo. repeat for all sticks one at a time.

>>51687273
Yes.
You cant 'store' power in any electronic thing unless it has a battery, so it all comes from the main.
Less than 5W.

>>51687321
Yes.

>HD5450
it's a meaningful upgrade, but the 5450 is shit for today's standards so pretty much anything in the market right now is way superior. I'd recommend an R9 at least, assuming you actually want to play the latest games.

Yeah I'm doing a pull config now, is it just as efficient as a push config from the other side?
I'm using a very very old build.

Evo 212 + and I upgraded RAMs a year ago, so I'm still using 2x4GB along with the older 2x2GBs.

Thanks,w ould keep that on mind on my next build probably next year.

GDocs is cancer. Use LO if you want something free & decent.
>>
>>51687807
it's not as effective but it will do fine. its better than making the fan on the back of the case an intake at least because then you wont have any exhaust for the hot air unless you have holes or fans in the top of the case.
>>
>>51687691
Microsoft Publisher exists for this. First thing that popped in mind, don't know anything about making newspapers so there's probably some good free software out there as well.
