What on earth is the purpose of these things?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_floating_nuclear_power_station

Why would you put a reactor on a seagoing vessel without that vessel performing any special and energy demanding function like being a floating airbase or a platform for SLBMs or an icebreaker?

Any proposed economic usage of those things seems like a waste of money to me. Supporting offshore oil and gas exploration and infrastructure building? Well, these things did well without floating nuclear reactors around them all the time. Providing energy and water for settlements in the Russian far north? Well just build stationary things. That'll cost much less. Increasing the security of supply of these places? Well, just build stationary fail-safe and backup facilities. Much cheaper.

What are these things *really* for?

melting steel beams

It's just a concept. It won't happen because Russia is in a very poor financial state.

Russia proposes stuff like this all the time and it almost never happens because they can't fund it.
>>
Seems flexible for remote locations where it acts as an all in one without requiring a massive amount of resources extending power lines, waterworks etc for possibly temporary periods.
If its mass produced as the article suggests, it should be cheaper than building entire permanent buildings in cut off places where its costly to send workers, and again, power lines etc could be a factor

>go to remote island
>setup base of operations in 5 seconds

seems like russia has some plans

Sure those things can be done without a floating nuclear power station, but maybe they can be done better with one.
Also, from wikipedia:
>It could also be modified as a desalination plant producing 240,000 cubic meters of fresh water a day

>>51682901
>Construction of the first floating nuclear power station, Akademik Lomonosov, started on 15 April 2007 at the Sevmash Submarine-Building Plant in Severodvinsk. However, in August 2008 construction works were transferred to the Baltic Shipyard in Saint Petersburg, which is also responsible for the construction of the next vessels. Akademik Lomonosov was launched on 1 July 2010, at a cost of 6 billion rubles (232 m$).

This is what Americans actually believe.

the only think that Russia is lacking is the grade of their food, which they get most of it imported.

possibly an underwater base
>>
For the hell of it?
Seems like quite a good way to provide flexible energy demands. If you want large amounts of power in an area you can get it in days, if not hours. Then once the area has set up their own power, move it somewhere else.
I've done similar things in Star Ruler. I build a ship that comes with a supply of stuff so that a newly colonised planet can use that to get a head start.
>>
>>51682818
wouldn't this make them less vulnerable to natural disasters?
If they could be predicted then the reactor could be moved to safety maybe?
>>
>>51682901
Russia is doing very well financially, idiot.
Because of the anti-nuclear scare in europe, Russia is making money hand over fist selling gas to europe.

Russia has recovered since the 90s, they're in syria for fuck's sake.

You literally read this on reddit yesterday lmao. Redditor and a parrot :?)

they import most of their apples from poland

my polish friend was saying when the russia vs ukraine thing started they imposed an apple ban, and had a massive apple event where they were eating, smashing and doing whatever the fuck they wanted with the apples BUT send them to russia.

polish people are funny, i've heard some great stories.

or OR
They could sell or lease them to other countries this way and not have to worry about the UN sanctioning nuclear research. And if the country in question tries anything funny, these reactors would be super vulnerable to the overpowered navies of superpowers
>>
>>51683229
It's more efficient to move the water to the reactor than the other way around dude.
>>
Portable energy sources have been a thing we needed for a while now...
>>
>>51683272
>moving the reactor
uh no, they'd be building new ones
>>
>>51683223
they are also poor
>had a massive apple event where they were eating, smashing and doing whatever the fuck they wanted with the apples BUT send them to russia.
wonder why...

I wish I was kidding, check out Status-6.

This is how to counter the tartars without killing anyone openly.

To generate power.

>>51683223
it was russia who imposed ban...so polish had to do something with those apples
>>
>>51683283
yeah for handheld devices

>>It could also be modified as a desalination plant producing 240,000 cubic meters of fresh water a day
Which is enough to support a million people based on the Russian daily urban per capita fresh water consumption. But what for? They wanna build 7 or 8 of these things.
>>
>>51682917
What? You want to suggest it's cheaper to build a ship with all the maintenance and logistics tail associated with it than to transport workers with helicopters to a remote location? If these workers then build a stationary reactor this requires less power lines than the lines from ship to shore and inland to where the power is required.
>>
>>51684958
Retard
X country has a tsunami and electricity is cut out from half the country. They need a temporary solution before they can rebuild generators. Russia sends this floating nuclear reactor.
Makes sense?
>>
>>51682818
Battery powerful enough to power poordroid memephones for longer than 1 day
>>
>>51685188
No. Doesn't make sense. Because building a vessel that gets used for a couple of weeks once in a decade and then building 7 or 8 of them is stupid uneconomic bullshit.
>>
>>51685188
>>51686857
Not to mention the floating reactor might take a couple of weeks to get where it's needed. A diesel generator fits in a large transporter airplane and can be there over night.
