You could be combining all those volumes into 1 big volume.

Disks are about 8 years old, still going strong.

Upgrading to RAID5 4x 2TB and an extra 120GB SSD in RAID0 once I get my end-of-year bonus.

Still in doubt if I should go 5x 2TB in RAID5 and a SM951 M.2 256GB SSD, any thoughts, /g/?

I use Intel fakeraid and the results are far superior to when these drives are not raided

Not sure why you would waste money on a hardware raid controller lol

this is for a laptop, mini-SATA
I'm thinking of this maybe, for $70 it gets me up to about 500GBs total, the 500GB version is also tempting

can you boot off lvm?
>>
>>51679520

>>
>>51679520
Yes.
You need to use Grub2 and put LVM in your initcpio though.
>>
>>51679536
Can't do it without an initrd image?
kek

raid is better in every way, even on loonix
>>
I've had the same 500 GB HDD for like 10 years and never filled it up, except for that time I downloaded all my Steam games at once.
>>
>>51679555
You're refering to hardware raid right? well ofcourse hardware raid is better than any virtual volumes implementation.
Or maybe you mean software raid too? if so, explain.
>>
>>51679568
>Or maybe you mean software raid too?
I can boot Windows off my software raid + bretty sure it's faster than just spanning two volumes
>>
>>51679428
>>51679430
I take it you've never had a drive fail in one of those arrays. The controllers do the "Array" part fine but not the "Redundant" part.
And decent RAID controllers that are far better than software garbage can be as little as $100, and that will have a battery-backed write cache too.
>>
>>51679582
Are you sure your Windows isn't just relying on some Windows equivalent of initrd?
How is your software raid implemented?

This raid array took around 36 hours to initialize.

This old LSI controller hits around 750MB/s read and I am limited by my gigabit network connection to 120MB/s. What's the cheapest way to get 10gbit between them anyways?
>>
>>51679595
intel fakeraid
>>
>>51679661
>>51679595
btw I don't really know anything and was just arguing for the sake of it. Wanted to point out to some guy that the feature of LVM he liked was available in Windows.

And yeah I'm sure Windows has some sort of initial ramdisk it uses but the leetest Gentooers will laugh at people who need an initrd image because it implies they used genkernel
>>
>>51679661
That isn't really software raid.
That's BIOS assisted software RAID.
>>
>>51679587
Actually, one of the drives "failed" recently, They are completely out of warranty, so I just readded it to the array, it rebult for two hours and now it is working fine again.

Smart-values show no pending sectors or anything weird, just a power-on time of almost a year.

I was full on 3 of the drives until the other day when my 4TB finally came in the mail.

Got everything reorganized yesterday so i've got plenty of breathing room for the time being to download more anime.

Private trackers are a blessing and a curse. At this rate I will need another 4TB in ~6 months.
