I got one of these a while back for free from a dell precision workstation, mobo only. I was thinking about throwing a couple xeons in it and using it as a desktop. The board just has such a strange standoff layout.
Will this fit into a typical case designed for eATX boards /g/? If not what are my options? I was thinking about trying to get a hold of one of the old precision cases but they're around $60 and I'd rather get a nicer, new case.

Also would this make a viable budget gaming machine with its 16x PCI-E slot?
>>51677281
Yeah youll be fine. Just remember that you need identical RAM in it's sister slot.
>gaming pc
Thats like asking if your car will go fast because you put nice tires on it.

>I watched Linus Shill Tips new video on how to get shitty old hardware and play Witcher 3 on it.
>/g/ please do research for me.
Heh, I snapped up a dell workstation for $50 the other day. i've been pretty impressed with it, I threw windows 10 and an SSD in it and works great. I don't have it connected to the internet because botnet. If you can get two xeons on there, buy them second hand. You'll get them for next to nothing but get a lot out of them.
Wouldn't bother with making a gaming machine out of it though. might as well fork out some more dollery doos for a mobo with more thorough. Even a cheap AMD combo will be better suited for gaming
>>51677281
That's an old board, you'd get better performance getting a cheap fm2+ motherboard and AMD A10-7850K

I'm right, search your feelings, you know it is true.
>>51678077
you literally can get double the speed out of a xeon, plus double that again because of an extra CPU if OP bought two
and on top of that, he'd have to get another mobo
just... why?
>>51677281
You can't, really.
I doubt those holes actually line up with the EATX mounting holes.
Also that 20-pin connector probably isn't standard, even if it were you'd need two power supples to power it.
LGA771 CPUs aren't worth it. LGA1366 is the oldest socket still potentially worth going for if you already have a mobo.
That's a precision 490 mobo.
they take a special psu.
they are BTX
they only support 5300 series quadcores
on paper they only support 4gb dimms
the onboard audio on mine atleast was unusable even for a audio feed input
they never made a proper cooler that isnt loud AF especially if you are running x5365s
the ram gets hot as fuck
no sata 3
nah m8. maybe if you can get a origional case with all the fans and a psu, but still.
>>51678127
whoops, they arn't BTX, but non-standard for ATX hole layout anyway.
>>51678113
socket 771 faggot that's like a core 2 quad xeon.
>>51677544
>>51678077
>better performance getting a cheap fm2+ motherboard and AMD A10-7850K
Um... s-sure.
This was my old pc, using the same mobo as OP's.
>>51677631
If thats the board i have then you can only get to the 5300 series cause bios support
Pic related my 690 wirkstation
>>51678206
muh synthetic benchmarks
Do you just run benchmarks all day or do real shit nigger?
>>51678206
oops wrong score, I cant actually find a cinebench score for it even, enjoy this instead
>>51678221
define "real shit"?
Pretty sure rendering is some pretty real shit for a workstation...
>>51677281
haha I just threw away a bunch of t7400s and t7500s at work, that shit is weak as fuck
>>51678289
Listen cunt, I have a core m laptop and a virtual host with an e5 2680. It's not like I'm muh AMD
This is garbage tier shit, how old is socket 771? pointless, the performance per watt is going to be fucking awful
>>51678341
Why would you throw them out?
>>51678361
>performance per watt
and this is relevant how? Who gives a fuck if you pay an extra 10 bucks a year.
771 is however about as old as you can get while still seeing decent performance. I would definitely go with a hexacore skt1366 based build if I had to build a cheapass shitbox, but they are not weak.
>>51678401
because they are huge pieces of shit that always break and are out of warranty. I told all the engineers to take the VMs I make them and like.
>>51678514
But why throw them out? They're worth $120/$200 each. You could at least give them away.
>>51678561
not really, when companies dump old hardware, they pull the drives and destroy them, most people dont want a computer that doesn't have an os, and it is more work to sell them/sell parts. Giving them away is an option, but again, depending on area, no one may want them.
>>51678591
stupid companies do that
there are charities who will pick that shit up, and make you look good in the process
>>51678463
>10 bucks a year
kek...
>>51677462
The CPU/s aren't great especially in terms of performance per thread, but it's still good enough.
>>51677524
This. Fuck off OP if you can't work this out yourself.
>>51678120
>LGA771 CPUs aren't worth it.
They are, if you're suing them in a S775 board that you already own anyway
>>51677281
Are you another fucking fag who watched fagot linususus new video about building cheap gaymen builds from used server motherboards from ebay?
ARE YOU FUCKING FAG?
