Dunno man, LAN parties are fun as fuck.
>>
>>51676365
why wouldn't you?
>>
Have you ever participated in one? Tons of fun if the layout of your LAN area was well thought out. We would have 2 small parallel rows of computers just small enough to allow a cart of food to move through the aisle back and forth. The person who wanted a break from gaming would serve food and refill the cart

These days LANs are easier than ever, no giant CRT's to lug around, availability of WiFi, less cables to worry about. And yet with the advent of online multiplayer many people shrug their shoulders with a "What's the point?"

But I'll tell you what the point is. Getting packed into a room of people who share your hobbies and interests. being able to see and interact with them. Having a friend grab you a beer or baking a pizza together. Throwing popcorn at the guy who just domed you, seeing the smiles on everyone's faces as they throw their heads back and laugh.
That's the magic that we lost with online gaming. That's the magic that we gave up for matchmaking.

Was it worth it? Sure, maybe it was for the convenience of it all. But to be able to capture that again...

I've flown to Quakecon 3 times, 2010, 11, and 13. First two were great fun, win LAN setups that everyone could see everyone else on.

2013, and the setup was changed to fiber connection to the net, and only 6 people at a table could see each other. Combine that with the fact that over half the people were playing LoL or DOTA, and there was zero reason to go anymore.

2010 had a very open network as well, and filesharing was rampant. 2011 they clamped down on it (no CC++), but there ways around it. 2013 had zero.

Now that Carmack is gone, and Bethesda is still trying to sue him/Oculus, I have reason never to return.
>>
>>51681458
>it was the best most people had back then tho
no, the best was to get everyone together and play on a lan
y'know, like in ops' picture

also, "best we had" still didn't make 500ms latency any more playable with quake 3
you either play a 'slower' game like diablo or ultima or some shit on-line, or you get a lan party together

I used to frequent a popular south Florida lan center in the mid 2000s, so even though I'm a youngfag compared to PC gamers in the 90s, I got to experience the tail end and death of an era and it was fucking great. >Pretty much this, it's really fucking sad. I've ran the helpdesk at the 400 person LAN party which takes place every year at PAX Prime, and while it's good fun playing with friends near you, most other people are playing LoL/DOTA. Very few people playing CS, UT, Quake, or any RTSs.

>2013, and the setup was changed to fiber connection to the net, and only 6 people at a table could see each other. Combine that with the fact that over half the people were playing LoL or DOTA, and there was zero reason to go anymore.

Dota, lol, heartstone, tf2, world of tanks and any other kind of massively played online game should be outright banned at lan parties. There should be a big sign with 'we offer no Internet connection here, fuck your online games' at every lan party

I swear to God those shit games take over 60% of the playerbase at every lan i've been and they're not even particularly fun to play at a lan. They're games designed specifically to be enjoyed over the Internet, so bringing them to a lan doesnt improve the experience at all. Plus they always look so fucking bored when they play LoL/DOTA it pisses me off

Helps them think, maybe? Keep them from going bald? I need to get a Watch Cap or something for use with headphones, so my hair doesn't get even worse.

Man in Lebanon we have what I think Westerners would call internet cafes, only they are only used for LAN gaming: we call them networks.
Basically you get together with your friends and play generals or CS or even LoL, Dota and what have you, WoW back in the day too. And there are tons of them and rivalries between networks, competitions etc. You pay by the hour and its something like 60 cents if no internet is used and a dollar if you used internet. you also can get drinks and snacks and can even order food delivery. Everyone calls you with your username and the vibe is chill as fuck, you can ask anyone if they want to play with agaisnt you, challenges etc, you build a relationship with everyone and you just go there to relax and play your game, and if your good at it people will ask you for advice, and if your a noob no worries everyone is here to support you. it's actually where I spend almost all my free time... no girls there though, or if there are everyone is drooling
