Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are three ways to try Linux, you can:

1) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux (not recommended)

If you are serious about switching to Linux and if you have Windows dual-booted (recommended for pure newbies), we recommend you use it exclusively for 2 weeks, and avoid Windows dual booting for that period of time, or it's likely you will start retreating back to windows instead of getting used to GNU/Linux as your new home and working on making it feel the way you want it.

>Recommended for beginners:
-Ubuntu MATE
-Debian (For Broadcom devices, use an ISO that includes non-free firmware)
-openSUSE
-LinuxMint (a.k.a Ubuntu LTS + Cinnamon)

Before asking, please find the answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe wine can make up for it.

I just installed Linux mint onto my computer, cinnamon, and it's a Dell XPS L401X.
It has this annoying setting that Linux keeps defaulting too, and treats my computer as if it has two monitors. I can fix it by pressing this button a few times (pic), but it crashes cinnamon.
Also whenever I try to play a game like Crusader Kings 2 it changes the resolution entirely to two black boxes on either side of the screen.
Tl;dr resolution keeps fucking up what do

Hey /g/ just installed Debain on Virtual box seeing if I can install all the things I need before I switch. One Problem that I encountered were that my repos didn't go into the installation cd.

Do it using sudo then? I think it's in Debian's default install now.

sudo pico /etc/apt/sources.list

I was trying out korora. Gnome3 is weird as shit and I don't like it, but cinnamon is just fucking awful. For everything thing that is better than gnome, there are two fundamental flaws. Don't know about mint itself but cinnamon is like the windows me of DEs.
>>
>>51675034
> It's going to take more than rice to fix how fundamentally flawed the font rendering is.
All you need is a sane fonts.conf, most of infinality patches are upstream anyway.
We have had good font rendering for ages by now, so it's sad to see distros fuck it up.
For some I get it, but for DE oriented ones like Mint there should be no excuse.
For the rest who can or want to tinker, it's really not that hard to fix.
The Arch wiki page on fonts is suitable for all distros.
>>
>>51675113
Have you tried KDE? Though you need to run the latest versions to get actually something working, which is not in all distros yet.
It's the most comprehensive DE around, and if I'm not using the DE side, kwin is usually the wm for me.
My old combo was kwin+xfce for a very long time, but now I'm trying to get "into" Gnome, just to give a fair chance.
>>
>>51675147
This, I don't know why it's so difficult to comprehend. With a basic conf the default font rendering is excellent these days.

Ignore arch cunts who parrot "install infinality", they have no idea what they are talking about.

Yeah, but you have cdrom as the repo also there, so remove that, you can comment it out with '#', or just remove them, you really have no use for those.
Also those repos you got are better since they use the redirecting urls, so instead of hammering the central servers you will fetch packages from geographically much closer mirrors and the bw is not raped.

You can point to one manually, or use a tool "netselect-apt" or just use those httpredir domains.

or lack thereof

speed/memory usage can also be a concern (my Xubuntu machine uses like 150MB RAM idle (4GB RAM in the machine, barely ever hits swap), Windows 7 uses like a gig idle)

mind you, I'm using Windows on my main machine
90% of the shit I do day to day can be done on Linux, but there's that last 10% that's an issue.
Software and drivers are more important than the OS you're on, so you'll probably want to stick with Windows unless you know you can get shit done under Linux and it'll work with your hardware. Hardware support's gotten much better in recent years, but the complete lack of any professional software outside of certain academic fields for Linux is still an issue (only commercial software I have that runs on Linux is the DAW I use (Renoise) and a handful of indie games in Steam that came bundled with shit I actually wanted).

I've just come into the possession of a shitty Dell Inspiron 2400. It's got 512 MB of RAM, a Dothan Pentium M processor, and a PATA HDD. I'm trying to install Lubuntu on it since I don't think anything else would be even remotely usable, but it throws an error about PAE not being present on the CPU. Hello what is the proper way to install linux mint and win7 for dualbooting and both working in uefi mode (and recognising gpt drives)? I am asking this bcause I did it a year and something ago and had to go through a lot of hurdles to get it done (ie. Windows had to compulsory be installed from a pendrive, something had to be started through the uefi console, I think the install order mattered, etc) and I really can't remember the details. At some point the windows install got fucked and I don't remember why but I re installed mint and the windows bootloader just stopped working (what's the proper option when gparted asks you to install the bootloader, /dev/sda or /dev/sda1?). I'd like to re-install both but now I have a /home folder I'd like to keep. On top of that my uefi has many 'ubuntu' boot entries and some of them do not work or I need to put them in a specific order.
Is it possible to clean this mesa without losing non-system data?

Hey Im getting ready to install Arch Linux for the first time on an old winxp dell, is there any previous release i should use? Or should i just hop on to the current release and cross my fingers?

Which is the best light but functional Debian-based distro for everyday use (surfing the intertubes, programming, movies), similar to what was once Crunchbang?

Do I just istall Debian, add Openbox (almost literally what #! was) and spend as little time as possible on pimping it, or do I try something like Lubuntu?
Arch seems interesting too, but I'd install it just to tinker and learn so I don't know if I'd enjoy it as everyday OS.

Why is blender such a huge piece of shit.
It's the only reason I cant't switch to linux.
My 3D workflow on windows consists of several gratis tools that each do their specialized tasks perfectly.

Meanwhile, blender is a huge, bloated piece of shit that does everything, but poorly. And nobody comes up with standalone tools because they'd rather contribute to blender.

Fuck blender.

I only want a Linux distro on my spare computer, so I'm using UNetbootin to make an Ubuntu Server live USB. The Wikipedia page for UNetbootin says "when installing to hard disk, UNetbootin installs to a partition, not a disk image, thus creating a dual-boot setup between Linux and Windows."

The computer that I want Ubuntu Server installed on already has Windows XP on it. Does this mean that when I install Ubuntu that it will be installed alongside XP? If so, how would I remedy this?

I'm on openSUSE / Xfce. How do I change the window snapping behaviour to be more like that of Windows 7? By default, if a window that was snapped to the side is pulled to the top, the window stretches across the top half of the screen instead of going fullscreen (which is logical but I don't need it right now), and clicking the button on the right corner from there puts the window on the middle of the screen (but not full), and finally from there clicking the button again makes the window fullscreen.

use ctrl+alt+F2 to get you into a terminal

log in

use your package manager's CLI commands to remove the drivers you installed, then make sure that the vesa driver (Xorg's fallback driver with no 2D or 3D acceleration) is installed on your system. Then attempt to restart the computer and see if X is working again.

No, it booted into the OS just fine, it's just that your X server (graphical environment) failed to start. You should be able to get to a command line interface terminal with ctrl+alt+F2. You should get to a screen that resembles pic related.

Once there, you can log in and use the terminal to fix your system.

I'm not sure what mint uses as a package manager, I'm assuming it uses APT? Someone else here should be able to chime in and tell you the proper command to run to uninstall the nvidia driver and install the vesa driver.

My best guess would be something like
 sudo apt-get remove *name-of-package*

I'm trying to change a few settings in my nginx configuration running rutorrent.
The problem is that it's not executing PHP scripts in the rutorrent directory (it does work in the normal webroot).

Here are the relevant parts of my config:
http {
server {
root /srv/http;

location ~ /rutorrent/ {
root /usr/share/webapps;
}

location ~ \.php$ {
fastcgi_pass unix:/run/php-fpm/php-fpm.sock;
fastcgi_index index.php;
fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $document_root$fastcgi_script_name;
include fastcgi_params;
}
}
}

It's pretty obvious that it's not executing the php scripts because it has matched the /rutorrent/ location and not getting to the .php location.
How can I get it so the PHP scripts will execute in both the /rutorrent/ location and the normal webroot?

Is it a wise idea to install Gentoo as a portable OS? Or should I use a more general distro? Because I'm fed up with NTFS crashing on my external drive but can't use VFAT since I have more than a few >4GiB files on it. So I thought about making a small partition (~15GiB) for the whole OS and the rest in seperate partitions that are either ext4 or btrfs.
The reason for it to be portable is, so I could take it with me when visiting friends and still access the data.

>>
>>51697366
It's not exclusive to this drive regarding the problems with NTFS. That's been a thing for about 5 years now.
Like I've written, the OS would only come to play if I go to visit some friends with it. For me, personally, it wouldn't change a thing because I'm already using a GNU/Linux distro (Gentoo).
I don't know why but Windows doesn't like the way Linux handles NTFS (which is understandable considering the fact that it's a proprietary fs).
Even if unmounted correctly, Windows either can't access the data on the drive at all, saying that it needs to be formatted, or it says that it's corrupted in some way and needs to be repaired.

I just installed arch, nvidia drivers, and a greeter, but i looks like my mouse, the logitech G600 has a problem with linux where it sends multiple scancodes on each click and release of its main buttons. The result of this is that left clicking, right clicking, or middle clicking all move the mouse cursor to a specific X coordinate on the screen, making it impossible to do anything with a mouse.

I've tried all the steps In this blog post documenting somebody else working through the same problem[1], and in this wiki article[2] but neither of them worked, nor did further experimentation and tweaking.

Does anybody have a G600 working on arch or know of a way to fix this bug?
