>tfw we will never have sexy single slot high-end cards again
What the fuck happened?
>Nobody knows that feel except me
>>51674315
3 slot 390x master race reporting in.
>>51674315
Well there was this one...
>>318789321
>order 980
>work during delivery hours so have it sent to pickup facility
>not going to get here until fucking Friday night
>pickup facility not open on weekends
>work on Friday night
I'M SO FUCKING ANGRY.
>>51674435
Liquid cooled need not apply, considering you need a rad and everything for them.
>>51674315
I know your feel. The last I had was an 8800GT.
Seriously. I'm okay with the power of GPUs right now, I'd rather more work go into making them smaller.
Transistor density has increased enough that you simply can't cool the chips in a single form factor, at least not without extreme airflow which a single slot fan cannot provide.
See: some of those tesla (iirc) cards Nvidia make are passively cooled themselves, but require X amount of airflow (usually from some server case fan of sorts).
>>51674493
like the nano?
cute as fuck :3
>>51674579
Nope.
8800GT TDP: 103W
960GTX TDP: 120W
>>51674664
Mind you my 8800GT regularly went over 100C while playing Clear Sky.
>>51674664
Right, 100w TDP is something you probably could cool in a single slot form factor. Consider though the likes of hawaii, 980ti, fury - all cards with a TDP of 250w or more.
You don't just cool those chips in a single form factor unless you have a tiny heatsink and a few screaming slim fans. Not unless you have all your board components capable of taking enormous heat.
Pic related - its about as slim as you can go on current top end cards.
>>51674477
my 8800/9800/250 variants all had dual slot coolers, with a single slot bracket.
My 9500GT however was a true single slot card, and I still have two on a shelf.
>>51674748
You probably got GTX or GTS, those were dual slot, the GT was single slot reference though.
>>51674619
Holy shit I didn't know the 390x used so much power
>>51674315
Non-shit cooling happened. My 9800gt died due to overheating.
Now adays even a 750TI reference card that doesn't use a 6pin has a dual slot cooler
>>51675086
But at least it looked cool as fuck while it lasted.
Look at that ugly piece of shit >>51675095
i almost puke.
>>51674809
I had the Zalman cards from Gigabyte, all that copper and heatpipe and temperatures still crept into the 80Cs occasionally under sustained heavy loads.
>>51674424
is msi capable of making anything that isn't ugly as sin?
>>51675299
redacting this, just saw >>51675025
Am I the only one here who goes 100% fanless all the time? CPU reaches 80° but idgaf
>>51674461
>order 980
Oh lawl
>>51675299
They used to be.
>>51675039
>system power draw
but yeah, 390x is a beasty gpu.
>>51675144
>not wanting minimalist and purely functional gpus
>>51675333
That is the most retarded thing I have ever heard.
>>51674315
I'm pretty sure we will once HBM is commonplace.
>>51674315
>28nm process is almost 5 years old
No shit, sherlock.
Wait for 16nm then you'll return to normal non-retarded TDP cards that can function with a single slot cooler
>>51676415
AMDumb trying to resolve his cognitive dissonance over 20%
>>51675716
looks like trash
>>51675173
That's a third party cooling solution.
I tried to save my 8800GT with a zalman gv1000, dropped the temps down to about 70C max but it still started producing artifacts less than a year after replacing the cooler.
