So I want to upgrade my laptop's storage HDD to a larger SSD, how would I go about doing that?

It has an mSATA SSD for the OS and some programs, while my files and most of the other programs are on the HDD. Should I use Clonezilla to clone the drive then restore it after I upgrade? Or should I copy my files to an external, upgrade, then reinstall programs and copy the files back? Other suggestions are welcome.

For some information, I'm currently running Windows 8.1 and I plan to upgrade to Windows 10 as soon as I install the SSD.

Macfag here. Old keyboard broke. Because I needed a new one, I bought a Logitech K120 because it looked like it covered the basics. Turns out there are no volume keys. How do I set binds or do anything because it seems like this OS hates me and doesn't want me to be happy.

What do I check for besides

Can't completely copy an mp4 file to my kingston 32gb thumb drive. Starts off fine and then hangs within half a minute. Tried zipping it, etc.

USB stick is fine. Comp i'm trying to copy from might have a low voltage issue after I installed my old 6670 card. I'm grateful for any input.
>>
>>51674709
opening the case and LOOKING is OK. but you dont have to fucking touche and play around with the parts to make sure they're working. if it can run benchmark software and stresstests, it proves it works.

all you're doing by touching the components is risk shorting/frying them.

the only thing you should open the case for is to check if nothing is broken by using your eyes. no touching.
check drive bays, cables, clips, plastic cover on gpu and fans, etc.
>>
I suppose this belongs here, and excuse me but I'm on my phone so I can't type out the full examples I'd of liked to.

In short, is there anything to keep in mind when transforming interactive for loops into concurrent threads? Currently I'm basically just copy and pasting the meat of the for loop into a runnable class and transferring the necessary information into that runnable and just creating new runnable in the loop (maxing out around 10 threads).

It does speed up the process but I'm not sure if there are things to keep in mind when transforming things to runnable and threads.

I've never used Java before and this basic assignment is killing me. I've learned what the JCF is and I think I understand how to import it and then extend some classes, but how do I "add a new type" under a preexisting class???

Is there somewhere I can access/alter the library's source code?

>"Develop a new type of stack class called ArrayStack as part of Java Collection Framework (JCF). This implementation of the stack uses ArrayList for storing its elements and will have all restrictions defined for the stack structure including push, pop, and peek (see the top element of stack) as well as the Collection methods size, add, and iterator. Students are suggested to achieve this by adding a type under the AbstractCollection class in JCF."

Is it easier to use cloning software on an ssd or just reinstall the os? I don't really have anything worth saving on my drive that's going to be cloned but I am worried about issues that could happen with a cloned drive.

AbstractCollection sounds like an abstract class representing a collection. You should implement the abstract class with your own ArrayStack by extending AbstractCollection.

I uninstalled the software for my old card, put in a new one and it won't boot past the bios. I get a 5a in the lower corner and then nothing but a black screen and a 0_ in the corner. I updated my Bios but it still won't work. What do I do?
>>
>>51674899
try formatting it with NTFS, and unselect "quick format" so it will check for any errors on the drive.

does it stop on all file transfers or just this one mp4 file?

also run a disk diagnostic on the hard drive the mp4 is located on. the manufacturer should have one on their website or they will link to one.

>>51674943
does your mobo support RAM that fast? try CPU-Z and see if it shows the right numbers.

run a RAM benchmark tool. screenshot or write down the results.
open BIOS and manually set it to 1866 and then run the bench again and compare.
if its not any change, manually set the correct options in BIOS so it should run at 2133 and try bench again.

>>51674959
if the OS install is older than a year you might aswell just reinstall. if not, clonezilla is alright.

8.1 is not worse than 7, it depends on how annoying you find the UI

average users can't utilize i7s properly. it will perform exactly as an i5 would, (becuase the GPU is the bottleneck factor) but cost more. if you really need an i7 for cpu intensve stuff, like 3d modeling, go for it, but it makes no difference in vidya gaems

I have a table with a lot of foreign keys. When I insert into this table, I want to check to make sure that the foreign keys exist, ie insert a row into the foreign key's table if one doesn't already exist.

Which is the better way to do this (or am i missing the best way?):
A) INSERT OR IGNORE into all of the foreign key tables every time I insert into the table
B) do a try/catch, catch a failed foreign key constraint and insert then

It takes about 10x longer to do the INSERT OR IGNORE (there are a lot of foreign keys), but the try/catch feels hacky and gross

>>'Time to insert with insert or ignore is is 2.3121321201324463'
>>'Time to insert with try/catch is is 0.20801186561584473' (plus an additional ~2 seconds if it catches, which it shouldn't very frequently, but will happen enough that I need to account for it programmatically)

i just bought some parts for my computer from newegg on black friday
i think i may have fucked up
i got a intel i7 5820k
the mobo i got is the asus z170 pro gaming model
my mobo says the CPU socket is an LGA1151 and my CPU is a LGA2011v3 socket
does this mean that the two are completely incompatible?
if so will newegg accept returns on my mobo for this reason or exchange it for a different one

I mostly wonder whether that cpu sink will be able to handle a 4ghz OC. I can't fit a 120mm fan in the correct orientation so I had to step down to a 100mm. The case's airflow should be adequate barring cables so the cpu fan will be the limiting factor.

I'm hesitant to do that because with an upright cooler the airflow is pretty linear straight across the case. I think a flat cooler would create a sort of internal air cycle that probably wouldn't result in good airflow.

Mac has some affinity for the hipster hacker, Ruby /python / Javascript/coffeescript/ node JS / fullstack designer /programmer special snowflake unicorns out here in the sillicon valley.

PC of course has some game developer and java cube drone thing down.

You really don't need to know C in this day and age, c++11 is good if you can find a resource that doesn't use all the old paradigms (char* arrays, etc: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnWhqhNdYyk )

So, I think asking here would be the best bet since it doesn't really warrant it's own thread. I need to move out to a small town in the next couple of weeks and I've been ISP shopping for a while now around it since to be frank, I don't think I really could go without Internet.

This area though has basically fucking shit for options. There's AT&T, Mediacom, and this other service called Extreme DSL.

I've never had any of these ISPs before and I've nothing but vile shit about all of them. AT&T seems to have extremely low data caps that I simply couldn't work with. Mediacom's not better while also doubling as a shitty cable service. Extreme DSL is just selling repackaged AT&T U-Verse in the area without a datacap, which makes it look like the best option on paper.

Upon calling Extreme DSL it really left me uneasy with me wanting to give them money. It seems like a rinky dink operation and didn't really put me at peace. So, I'm kind of looking for advice on what to do. I rather not have to adjust what I do with my lifestyle since the town appears to be dead fuck in the middle of nowhere with no appealing things to do, so, staying online will be my only form of sanity.

If any of you guys have had these companies before can you give me some information on how their service is? I don't really have any options. What research I've done has also been conflicting. For example I've read that with AT&T's U-Verse plan they don't really impose the data cap limits, which is okay with me obviously, but, I've already read that they do. Mediacom isn't one I'd really like to go with since I've never had Cable internet before and it sounds awful to be honest. Extreme DSL seems appealing so far, but, like I said I'm not really comfortable when I go into touch with them. So I'm just looking for advice on the matter.

Picture related, my reaction to all this.

How does a switch communicate with a router?
I just dont understand how a switch can give each device on it a potential gigabit connection to the internet when the entire thing is only connected to the router with a single ethernet cable.

Hey sqt, came home to find that my tower won't turn on. Mobo light is on, but when I press the power button the fans do about a quarter turn, then won't do it again until I unplug the power cord and plug it back in. I'm figuring the PSU is shot considering the ~95% uptime for the last 4.5 years.
>>
>>51677100
lucky for you PSUs are cheap and fairly easy to replace(if you get modular)
>>
>>51677079
I've heard that's pretty bad too and only works half the time regardless? The options don't look that good either from what I can tell and wouldn't support what I need.
>>
>>51677094
Right but how are, for example, 5 gigabit internet connections communicating simultaneously through 1 connection from the switch to the router?
>>
>>51677176
Unless the router is also communicating at gig speed, you're just bottlenecking them there, but communication between devices on the switch would be at full speed, again assuming the devices have gig nics.
>>
>>51677277
And what if it did have a gigabit internet connection? Would it be better to plug as many straight into the router as possible? Would the switch not be able to supply the gigabit internet connection to each device?

Assuming all devices have gigabit speed, then it should be router->switch->devices. You can hang some off the router if you prefer, the difference would be negligible. Are you considering vlans or a dmz? Where are your devices getting dhcp and dns?
