Windows and Mac users must be very sad people.

But my Jolla only came with like 6 apps installed

+1 dude i like it

How many applications run natively on Sailfish, thus far? Not saying this as a statement or argument, just asking.
>>
>>51669147
That's just native apps.
It can also run Android apps.

Good news.
I plan to install Sailfish on my upcoming Fairphone.
>>
>>51671274
Let's be realistic: it's just Android without the Google botnet.
>>
>>51671313
and the Java bloat
>>
>>51671327
Does the Android UI run in Java?
Is that why it's so laggy?
>>
>>51671292
>only has 19 apps on it
>b-but it also runs android apps!
No thanks senpai, I'll just stick to android
>>
>>51669043
It's GNU/Sailfish u dummy
>>
>>51671313
>it's just Android

This proves you have no idea what SailfishOS is. It's 100% NATIVE LINUX, no JAVA VM like Android is.
>>
>>51671410

There's no GNU in Sailfish.
>>
>>51671292
But the few apps I use from the app store has to phone home to google or they won't run. Is that supported?
>>
>>51671432
I know, it's a successor to MeeGo.

I meant metaphorically: it will be like using Android, running Android apps 99.99% of the time.
>>
>>51671488
Sure.

You will get c.ucked by the botnet of course.
But at least it's your choice.
>>
>>51671500

Nobody uses Android apps 99% of the time on Sailfish. If that's your plan then Sailfish is not for you.
>>
but when are they making a phone that works in the US?
>>
>>51671516
I just don't want a Google interface, or be force to use Google's own apps and have a Google account.
>>
>>51669147
So what? I don't care of 99,999999999...99999999% apps in Android store because frankly most of them are useless to me.
>>
I would buy this in a heartbeat if it didn't come with shit hardware just like Ubuntu phone.
>>
>>51671584
Does anyone in /g/ have experience with the phone? It has pretty dated hardware, no? How smooth or slow is the phone in 'normal' use?

I got Nexus 5 for comparison.
>>
>>51671637
It runs absolutely fine. The OS is optimized for the hardware, why wouldn't it?
>>
>>51671683
Is that anecdote from your personal use or is that a guess?

How's the camera?

The camera performance really depends on the lighting, it doesn't do well in low light at all
>>
>>51671762
How does it multitask with 1GB of RAM?
And how does that 2100 mAh battery last in daily use?
>>
>>51671782
I use my phone pretty lightly, listen to music for maybe an hour a day, sometimes I can squeeze two days out of it. The ram situation is alright, right now I have 6 apps open, 2 of which are android apps. If I were to open more it would probably start killing the others. I can't wait to get my hands on the tablet though

I tried to push it a bit and open more apps, but it only ran into trouble when I had a youtube video playing in the background. Leaving that running and opening other apps would stop playback

Thanks for the replies. I definitely consider buying it.

I sold my Jolla after using it exclusively for 1 year. I would have gladly upgraded to a new Jolla with newer hardware but it never came.

Fairphone 2.

I think it's a decent phone in all respects, and the SailfishOS 2.0 update works a treat, but the hardware is quite dated at this point. If you can get a good deal go for it

>>51672003
The Nexus 4 had better hardware, but it doesn't mean shit when your phone gets slow with updates and lags

This explains a lot.

Everything on Android runs in Java. How do people not know this?

>>51672681
am i looking at a launcher? a task viewer?
the three showing threads, are they running programs? an image viewer with screenshots? suspended programs?
top right; is that a slideshow? a document reader? maybe a music player?
bottom right: an ad? a video player?
i guess "filecase" is a file manager, and the bottom is some hardware statistics widget
top middle: rss reader? mail?
>>
>>51672772
>i use linux

I'd like to interject for a moment. What you refer to as 'linux' is actually OSX/UNIX, or as I have taken to calling it, OSX plus UNIX.
>>
>>51672822
osx has nothing to do with linux
>>
>>51672772
So your argument is that you don't know the programs and that's why you don't know what they do?
>>
>>51671782
I am on 69% after a full day of general use with wifi & 3G left on. I get between 2 and 4 days usually but I don't sit browsing for ages
>>
>>51672923
my main point is not knowing what i'm looking at
ARE those programs? are they running? it appears like at least some are programs, and at least some are running, but it's not clear which
>>
>>51672984
also, only 2 of them have clear icons, and only one has a clear name

so i guess good luck to me finding out what the rest are
>>
>>51672984
>>51673060
So yes. You don't know it and that's why you don't know it and that is somehow not your fault. Sure. Are you sure you don't actually use a Mac?
>>
>>51671292
Last I checked, you only get the Android compatibility layer on official Sailfish devices.

This Japanese phone copied their modular design
>>
>>51673199
This is correct. The Alien Dalvik runtime is only available on Sailfish branded phones and is proprietary and requires a license. There are efforts to get Android app compatibility on non-Jolla phones, but so far this is very rudimentary (you switch into Android, run the app, but can't get back into Sailfish.)
>>
>>51671516
but then there are no apps left to use.. almost anyways
>>
as long as it has an internet browser and a decent music player I don't see the fuss over apps.

I use my smartphone to call, text, browse the web, and listen to music.
if jolla can do that with ease while running smooth and offering good battery life I see no reason not to get it.
what sailfish phones are there? I'm curious about whether they're worth it or not.
>>
>>51671390
>laggy
my nexus 5 ran smooth as fuck, and my g3 only occasionally lags but I blame sd801+1440p screen for that.
>>
>>51674309

You've never used it so shut up.
>>
>>51674381
This. Apps were created for the transition period between 2007 and 2009 when websites had shit mobile compatibility and phones were slow. They really have played out their part.

The use is very smooth. The browser had a habit to shit itself every now and then, but with the newest version those are mostly thing from the past. I would buy a Jolla 2 if they would ever came out.
>>
>>51671782
2-4 days usually. If I share wifi for the whole day and run IRC it lasts a bit over a regular working day (25% left when I get home)
>>
>>51671922
What Telegram application you are using? Jollagram doesn't receive messages, but I can still send them.
>>
>>51674381
funnily enough i use my phone for everything /except/ those things
>>
>>51671512
Several apps do this as a security thing.
They check if there is an update for that app every time they launch to ensure the newest version is used.

Telegram for Android, unfortunately. Jollagram is awful, barely works at all, but Sailorgram from openrepos works quite well. Still, both have limitations and the Android app works flawlessly.
