Anything modern will work well out of the box with Linux.
It's on really old laptops you may start having issues with proprietary drivers.
Anything at all with Intel graphics. If you use Ubongo, anything at all. Just no PowerVR graphics ever, under any circumstances. And some Broadcom WLAN cards may require nonfree firmware, which some distros refuse to supply (Again, Ubuntu usually bundles it anyway, because they like to deliver ease at all costs.)
