still trying to figure out which one i like more...............

the dt770 sounds super off when i start using it after long periods of time with the hd558s. i'm using a xonar DG to power them but that might be incorrect.

Poorfag here, but I need new hedphone
Are the Encore Rockmaster really the best value for this quality/price, or are these just hyped after the success of their crowfunding?
If they are bad, can you head me to another on ear closed and portable headphone at this price range?
I live in France and listen mostly to post punk

Requesting purchasing advice.

Budget - Don't want to spend more than $200 USD.

Location - Oregon, US

Source - MSI GT70 2QD Dominator laptop used mostly for gaming and movies.

Preferred type of headphone - Full-sized

Open or closed - Open

Comfort level - VERY comfortable. These will be my primary audio device for my computer, which I am on very often. Will use for hours on end.

Preferred tonal balance - Unsure. My mid-range is quite deaf, so I guess quite a bit of bass is ideal. Open to input here.

Preferred music (Skip if you already specified your preferred tonal balance or if you still don't care about it) - Don't listen to much music. Mostly games and movies. If I listen to music it's usually rock.

Past headphones (Skip if you're lazy) - Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 80 ohm. Want/need an open back design. With the DT 770s on I can't hear shit going on in real life, and I get a sort of pressure on my ears. Also worth noting I prefer a slick ear cup material, not the soft cloth on the DT 770s.
>>
>>51662091
I'm actually looking to get different headphones anyway, so I'm not going to bother replacing the cloth.

What do you mean "enhanced treble rape"? Genuinely curious. I thought that light cloth material was just there to prevent dust from getting into the drivers.

it damps the treble response and elevates the bass a little bit

bill-p, for example, used 3 layers of paper towel, a thicker piece of felt than the stock one that comes with the dt770 and rug liner on top of that to achieve pic related

the problem with the rug liner is that it is thick and sits on your ears since the distance from the driver to your ear isn't that large (and thus rug liner mods are more suited to headphones like the hd800 and t1) which makes them pretty uncomfortable to wear because in a way it makes them on-ears

>>51662249
Huh well that would explain why they don't sound as good as they used to. In any case, I'm looking to replace them with something. Posted seeking purchasing advice here: >>51662177
>>
>>51662277
I would say the DT990 if you're happy with how the 770 used to sound but want an open version. The big problem I would say would be the comfort. This line of Beyers particularly are infamous for being extremely comfortable, moreso the premiums than the pros but the latter can be stretched at the headband anyway to achieve a similar result.

Alternatively you could try something like the K7XX from Massdrop if you want a change.
>>
>>51662312
I forgot to add following the comfort thing, you may be disappointed with the comfort level of other headphones coming from the 770 for the reasons I stated.

Personally the only headphones I've found more comfortable than the premium line were the HD800.
>>
>>51662329
Okay thanks a ton for the suggestion! I wasn't even aware the DT 990 existed, so this is pretty cool.

Some questions for you though.
What are the main differences between the Pro and the Premium versions?
If I'm using this for mostly gaming and movies on my laptop with no amp or anything, which ohm version do you recommend, 32 or 250? Pretty huge difference there.
>>
>>51662425
Most people suggest avoiding the 32ohm, the bass is really boomy and not controlled at all. Depending on how old the laptop is it might not be powerful enough for the 250ohm model.

The differences between Premium and Pro:
- Appearance
- Premium comes in 32ohm, 250ohm and 600ohm, Pro is only 250ohm.
- Pro have more, they'll be similar to how your DT770s were
- Pro have easier to replace headband padding as it snaps on with little buttons while the padding on the Premium is basically permanent
- Pro has a coiled cable, Premium has a straight cable

If I were you I would suggest waiting for a deal on the 990 Pro, Adorama just recently had them for $125 which would leave you room for an amp to power them properly. Or even a little DAC/Amp combo unit like the Schiit Fulla.
>>
>>51662492
Pro have more clamp, they'll be similar to how your DT770s were*
>>
>>51662492
Laptop is quite new. How would I know if it's powerful enough for the 250 ohm model? Sound card is just the Realtek built-in ports on the laptop.
>>
>>51662584
Someone could probably give you advice if you know which codec it is, the spec sheets have so much indirect information that I personally don't know how to make it out because of my lack of EE knowledge.
>>
>>51662492
>If I were you I would suggest waiting for a deal on the 990 Pro
Oh so you recommend the Pro over the Premium?

I'm still stuck on the whole impedance thing. The 770s I have now are 80 ohm which is closer to the 32 ohm option. I don't want to get the 250 ohm model and have super quiet sound from my laptop.

>>51662603
If it's any indication, my laptop is at 50% volume with my 80 ohm DT 770s. Most things sound good at this level.
>>
>>51662080
>>51662074
How is this possible?
>>
>>51662626
>Oh so you recommend the Pro over the Premium?
The Pro considerably cheaper (like that deal for $125 versus the regular ~$220 price of the premiums) and excluding the other difference you get identical sound.

>my laptop is at 50% volume with my 80 ohm DT 770s
Well going off of Tyll's measurements of the 32ohm and 250ohm DT880, the 250ohm need just over twice the voltage to reach the same volume as the 32ohm. (and 0.10mW less power)

I imagine with the 250ohm you'd probably be at least at 80% volume then? I mean in any case it probably couldn't hurt to buy them now from Amazon, see how loud they get and return them if they're too quiet and possibly wait for the same $125 deal to get an amp with them or pick up the K7XX for $200 next time Massdrop sell them again.

neutral means it should represent all three sonic ranges without bias

You are entitled to your opinion but the HD598's bass isn't weak if you look at the various measurements objectively.

It doesn't help when most headphones have a bass boost as well, even the ones you think are flat, which probably aren't flat.
>>
>>51665827
It's pretty easy to do that. Harman used (or uses) a Sennheiser HD518 with various EQ profiles for listener testing. Some target curves had moderate boosts in the sub-bass. HD518 has the same driver as HD598.

Yes.

>>51665866
They still do
>Ten pairs of well-matched headphones (model Sennheiser HD518) were used in these experiments. The model was a dynamic, open-back headphone having a relatively smooth and extended frequency response with low distortion. These features made it a good candidate for equalization. More importantly, it proved to have a consistent fit across listeners (confirmed by measuring it on several listeners with multiple re-seats of the headphone between measurements). Being an open-back design, it provided a controlled and predictable amount of bass leakage. Together these desirable features helped to minimize variations in the signals delivered to the listeners’ ears
>>
>>51665879
M40x is V-shaped, not as V-shaped as M50x.

I would know, I am a trained listener.

Also that's a 10dB scale that's noticeably smoothed. I remember seeing the same graph with a different scale, you'll see how V-shaped the M40x is.

The M40x is sort of the polar opposite of the HD598, it sounds clearer due to the greater treble quantity and the bass is more impacting due to greater sub-bass output.

I really like the M40x but HD598 is a higher fidelity headphone.

Depending on how shit the codec or the implementation of the codec on your motherboard is, it might. HD 598s have a rather low nominal impedance but a very large impedance swing right in the boomy 100Hz region. Amplifier itself is not the solution, an output with enough power(motherboard already has this I presume) but a low output impedance will make the headphones less boomy and more controlled there in around the 100Hz mark.

>>51665614
To amplify the signal. You could've guessed that from the name. If you have sufficient listening volume, in most cases amplifier won't do a thing other than allow you to have even more volume. A good amplifier however is silent(no hiss), has power to drive almost anything you plug into it and ensure good damping by having near zero output impedance. Not all amps do this. Get something like O2 if you want to be sure you are set and your motherboard codec's ability to drive those headphones is not limiting anything.

I'm looking for some good, full-sized headphones in a reasonable price range. Not sure about my budget, but let's say it's around 100 euros. Don't care much if they're open, closed or what's their tonal balance, I just want them to sound decent enough and be comfortable.

Beyerdynamic DT990 may be good choice, not the pro model since the impedance for that model is around 250Ω, which would require a beafier headphone amp. Check out the regular model, it is half open and can be worn for a long time without fatigue. They sound very neutral and are very detailed.

No, I am complaining about an idiotic chart that has no value.

>for a noob, that chart is perfectly fine, as distortion from these things is nothing like in the past, they are almost negligible
The issue is that this chart directly attributes electrical noise to the amplifier and the DAC. When, in many cases, it is something else.
It ignores important things that amplifiers do have an effect on, such as the dampening factor.
Additionally, it recommends combination amps for no reason, and pulls numbers like "5% better" out if its ass.

There is no need for that chart. Just link people to some the the articles on NwAvGuy's blog or something similar which explains, correctly, the effects of amplifies and DACs.
