Tap a sharp nail set through the outer casing of the hard drive. Then hammer it through the platters. If they're ceramic give it a shake. It will sound like broken glass and sand. If they're metal drive a few more holes in it.
Tape over the jagged metal and dispose of the drive.

You would have been right in the mid 80's when HDD's were much less reliable.
These days with modern hard drives, a single wipe with DBAN is perfectly fine. Multiple passes in modern day is due to wives tales, paranoia, or both.
There is only a 56% chance of recovering a single bits previous state, only slightly better than chance. To get any meaningful information like a 10 character username, you have to know EXACTLY where on the disk to look, and then hope you get a 56% success chance 80 times in a row. The resources required for that sort of thing is insane mind you, and not even police agencies have that sort of funding. Even if you had the money, it's a next to useless technique because of the failure rate.
