GIMP is great. You shouldn't compare it to Photoshop, you should compare it to MS Paint. It can do practically everything a home user will ever need from an image manipulation program. If you can also do professional work with GIMP since those 9001 features it has is enough for your job, that's great! You just saved yourself some licensing fees.
