I'm considering buying the i5-6600. Would this be a dumb move if my main goal is building a PC that will perform well (mainly games) for a couple years?

In comparison, how much longer would an overclocked i5-6600k last?
>>
http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/x3NmwP

Is this awful?

I want to play games - Fallout 4, some newer stuff some older stuff. I want it to last 3- 4 years.
>>
http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/B8Zb3C
Is there anything I should change? I don't do overclocking btw
>>
Is HAF912 a good case?
>>
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/TnFL3C

Building a gift for a cousin, the thing is designed to play Roblox and only play Roblox

I already have a case, a 300w PSU, two hard drives, fans and the stock heatsink on the old motherboard.

Im mostly concerned about the cooling, do you think could work with just a regular heatsink and a fan? Or would i want something a bit better for cooling?
>>
>>51650025
It looks pretty good in my opinion.

Some things that I'd change:
>mainboard
Find out if there's any cashback campaigns going on for Skylake mainboards in your country.
>GTX 970
I'd prefer the Sapphire R9 390
>PSU
I'd recommend not getting such a cheap one. If you spend a bit more you can get a god-like PSU:
http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-220g20550y1
>>
>>51650056
>CPU/mainboard
K CPUs and Z mainboards are meant for overclocking.
>GTX 970
Again, I'd recommend getting the Sapphire R9 390.
>PSU
650W is overkill
>case
Try out the case (it's good) and then decide if you need custom fans.
>>
>>51650246
what cpu and mobo should I go for?
>>
>>51650329
Basically the same processor minus the k, and something like an Asus b85 plus would be fine
>>
>building and hardware advice

i want to buy and build a PC but my spaghetti level wont let me.
i saved around 1700$ for a full build with screen.
i viewed some stores online but its almost impossible without some modifications to their builds and i need to actualy speak with someone.
this, and im kinda not sure as to why i should waste hard earned money for gayming and the possibility of my lazy ass ever using it for work related things.

tldr

please help me not neck myself
>>
>>51650434
Don't ever buy premade PCs. Sounds like a console would be a good choice in your case.
>>
Don't be stupid like me, check your sockets. AM3+ is not AM3
>>
I want to build a gaymen PC that will last me a while. I've done a lot of research and I've been looking at getting an R9 390 and a newer i5.

Thoughts? I can reuse components from my current machine. I just need a motherboard, CPU, and GPU.
>>
>>51650479
i think i read enough to know if the premade is good or not but why would i bother with consoles? i dont understand.
>>
>>51650526
I currently have a fx-8350, gaming 970 am3+ mobo, and two msi r9 390s, the 8gb ones. It was a great rig with one card but it's a 4k rig now
>>
>>51650557
1080p is sufficient for me, I just want to be able to max out Cyberpunk 2077 when it comes out.

Also. Why are people suggesting avoiding i5K processors? Aren't they easier to overclock?
>>
>>51650527
Premade is never worth it. You can always get the parts cheaper if you buy them piece by piece.
and
>why i should waste hard earned money for gayming and the possibility of my lazy ass ever using it for work related things
Before you buy anything, ask yourself if it's worth it for you. If you buy an expensive PC (that you might not even use that often) you might regret spending so much cash on it.

GPU obviously and a new power supply for your new GPU, as the old one certainly is outdated.
- BeQuiet Straight Power 10 CM 500W
- R9 390 Nitro
>>
>>51651608

I actually upgraded the PSU recently due to the old one failing after 5 years and 2 builds, she took the motherboard with her though.

So I got an EVGA 80+ gold 750W in anticipation of a GPU upgrade coming soon after. So I'm ready for a new GPU regardless of any other upgrades.

Been looking at an R9 390 too so thanks for that recommendation.
>>
What's the meme CPU of the now? My 2009 niggerrig is falling apart so I finally have to build something new.
>>
>>51651769
np bro.

Just watch out for your next PSU upgrade.
I suppose you don't run some fancy 3 x Titan X shit and need 1000W+. That means 500W will be enough every time.

Nonetheless your setup looks quite good.

What's /g/'s opinion of this build?

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/guide/8XYcCJ/i5-6600k-gtx-980-ti-gaming-pc

I haven't upgraded my pc in a long time, so I'm considering that build since it should be future proof for a while
>>
>>51651949

Nah I always go for single card solution and bang for buck. The R9 390 or the upcoming 960Ti seem like good options, the amount of VRAM the 390 has is a real selling point for me.

What a bout my monitor? I sort of want 1080p at least, not sure why I went for 1680x1050 all those years ago.

I thought you don't want a multi-GPU setup.

The Asus VG248QE is a nice "gaming" monitor with 144Hz. It makes games much smoother and it serves me quite good and the overall main features are nice as well for a good price.

I had a standard 60Hz monitor before and the difference is amazing.

>>51652319
Why do you want to upgrade your CPU?
The 2600K will live for 1-2 years till your next upgrade.

If you want to upgrade your setup for a 5820K you have to invest into a new Mainboard and RAM.

As a PSU the BeQuiet Straight Power 10 CM 500W is very good
or
if you have more money to spend get a 550 be quiet! Dark Power Pro 11 Modular 80+. It has almost everything Platinum rated and is maybe the best PSU right now out there to buy.
>>
>>51652414
>>51652403
The PSU is shit and way to oversized.

if you run an Intel K setup with a Z board you want to run a 2400 RAM because these boards can actually run with them.

PSU:
500W be quiet Straight Power 10 CM
550W be quiet! Dark Power Pro 11 Modular 80+
these are the ones you want to have

RAM:
8GB G.Skill TridentX DDR3-2400 DIMM CL10
Yep
>>
>>51652417
Because with multiple VM's open at the same time it's getting sluggish.

If it isnt't the CPU then I should really upgrade my RAM since I'm hitting the 8gb limit constantly.

But with DDR4 at reasonable prices now I'd rather upgrade my mobo and CPU at the same time instead of slapping more DDR3 into my existing machine.

Speaking of mobo, I've also been eyeing that samsung 950 M.2 SSD, so support for that would be nice.

And it's not like I couldn't use the 6 full cores. I'm only really hesistating because Broadwell-E could be around the corner.
>>
>>51649763
6600 would last around 4-5 years unless something major, which is very unlikely. A 6600k would last 6-7 years, if it's cooled well and doesn't burn out in 3 years.
>>
how much of a bad move is a g3258? was think of pairing with a 750 ti, was just curious as to how bad of an idea a dual core cpu might be.
>>
>>51652555
Adding 8GB to your system would cost you 40€.
A new CPU and MB would cost at least 400€ for a good setup.

Maybe just wait a bit more and live with your new 16GB machine
>>

Building a whole new rig.. deciding whether to choose i5-6600K or i7-6700K, coupled with a GTX 980ti.
Ive done some research, and it seems like for the price the i5 is more worth it, but I want this build to last me at least 4-5 years. Will I be "future-proofing" more with the i7?

I use my PC mainly for gaming, with some CAD and programming here and there (but nothing major)

I don't know how to tell if my i7 920 is hindering my gaming performance. Also, I've tried overclocking further but, I can't get anything stable beyond 3.4 ghz. Does this look alright for a Skylake build? Carrying over a 650W PSU and 1TB storage from my current PC. Started with Haswell but shifted over when I realized it wasn't much more expensive. Motherboard doesn't support RAID that I'm currently using but I'm not sure I care if I'm using an SSD for the OS. Really wanted a 960 or something but the price just doesn't justify it.

Still tempted to jump down to the cheapest Haswell I can find though. Is DDR4 likely to be a big deal in the future? I'm not going to buy a new CPU before the next socket change hits regardless of my choice now.

I'm already running an U12S on my Q6600 @ 3.2Ghz, which has a higher TDP (when OC'd) than the i7-6700k.
I also ordered a second NF-F12, so that U12S will be dual-fan. I think that'll be sufficient to cool down the beast.

Well 4 years isn't any time soon, but I'd still grab the 390x over the 4GB nvidia cards. Higher clock speed is better, but we're going to get more and more textures over the next few years and clock speed doesn't make up for a lack of VRAM. Sapphire makes good cards, though they are kinda power hungry compared to the Nvidia ones.

I just sorta quickly threw this together, would you approve or is this a disappointment.

I already have a 500w PSU and a GTX 780, didn't feel the need to upgrade those. Spent extra on the mobo and CPU as I have come to realize that is what really limits my ability to upgrade in the future.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Hw6tzy

Did I spend too much on anything? I might forgo an SSD for now and upgrade when I can budget it next year.

I'm clueless when it comes to the finer details of PC building so I'm subject to throw anything in my PC if I think it's good and I will also pay for premium stuff that's overpriced. I use a Razer Deathadder mouse and a Blackwidow keyboard if that gives you a clue who you're dealing with here lol.

Serious replies only please.

You might save a few bucks by getting an i5 instead of an i7.
Depends on what you want to do with your machine.

The RAM boost might be enjoyable.
The EVO M.2 drive works in SATA mode. You won't get any performance boost compared to a regular 850 EVO using a SATA3 interface. You'll save space in your case though.
If you want to use the full potential of a M.2 port, go for a PCIe drive, like the 850 PRO.

Trying to build a poverty-tier build with used parts for a friend of mine. Shit... I'm goddamn tired.
I meant a Skylake processor coupled with some DDR4.
Haswell, Broadwell and Skylake (for example) are codenames for Intel microarchitectures.
Skylake (6th Gen Core i5/7) is the latest one and is only a few month old.
We can also safely assume that any future desktop/server processor architecture designed by Intel will make use of DDR4 memory, so going on a DDR3-based arch today feels like an unwise choice.

AMDrones are taking a minor issue out of context and blowing it up well out of proportion
Almost no game out today will ever use 4GB of VRAM on a 970, even at 4K. You'd need ridiculous and unnecessary settings (like 8x MSAA at 4K, which is fucking stupid) to even exceed the 3.5GB of VRAM and enter the 0.5GB of back-up VRAM.
A 390 will NEVER use all 8GB of VRAM, even when Crossfired. It's AMD overcompensating for a non-issue.

I've based it on what I use on my GS70. It has 16gb of DDR3 at 800mhz (according to Speccy and CPU-Z). I've never, ever used more than 7gb and that's rare. It hovers around 2-3gb. I figure DDR4 at 2666 would offer better performance than I'm currently getting anyway. However, ram is something I'm not to sure about. It was only yesterday I learnt about latency and its timing.

Also, it's cheaper. I can get another 2x4 if I feel I don't have enough... right? Still operating in dual channel? Or should I go 1x8 then another in the future?

The PSU may need some work. For $135, a SeaSonic M12II 620W. https://www.pccasegear.com/products/13567

And when you get rid of those rubbish 970's and get the 390's, you'll make up the money you paid extra for a good quality PSU AND get better performance.

Is the Corsair carbide 200r a good case? If not, is there any other case you might recommend?

Unless AMD comes out with some massive groundbreaking shit (they won't) Intel for 99% of users if all you care about is performance.

That's weird. Why does this recent result from November 2015 over 15 Games (Including several Gameworks titles) average say something different?

"Almost no game out today will ever use 4GB of VRAM on a 970, even at 4K. "

Now look at the Recommended requirements for Fallout 4:

Recommended
NVIDIA GTX 780 3GB/AMD Radeon R9 290X 4GB or equivalent

It definitely is an issue, it's borderline and probably not noticeable much at 1080p as of currently, but surely has potential to fuck you up later if games should actually use more VRAM, let alone 1440p.
