raid has NOTHING to do with backups anon.
it's for REDUNDANCY.

unless you mean you have an additional raid-1 backup of your main raid, then shit thats impressive.

GOOD THING YOU HAD RAID-1 BACKUP!

>>51649035
How stupid can you be? Backup involves archiving and a separate storage that is not affected by changes to the original. How is raid-1 going to protect your data against anything except a disk failure?

how do you like your backups now?
>>

its unlikely but its still a possibility.

>dvd gets scratched
why would you make dvd backups.

>flash drive gets corrupted
why would you use flash drives for backups

>cloud service goes bankrupt
why would you ever rely on a 3rd party. Remember when OneDrive offered everyone like 1TB of storage and decided to completely fuck them in the ass? yeah.

you just described highly likely scenarios, lmao.
>>
What do I use as back-up? External drives?
>>
>>51649200
So after claiming that raid-1 is an alternative to a backup you're backpedaling so hard you're trying to justify not making backups at all now? It's fine if you don't have any data worth saving but other people might need it and you're definitely not saving face right now by acting even more retarded m8.

This, literally what would you need to back up?

my work stuff is backed up in exchange + gitlab

my personal code stuff is on bitbucket

my personal bureaucratic stuff is just a bunch of documents I saved in OneDrive. The really personal ones I even encrypted

for the rest...?
I can download my vidya on steam
I can watch muh series on netflix
what else is there?

It's not like I'm running a fucking data center

Say you linux is on sda1, and you wanna back it up with dd, should you do it while running a live USB, or can it be done while the OS is running? I did it while the os is running, and it did werk, I was just wondering if it's bad practice.
>>
>>51649809
>>51653122
I use rsync for my data and dd to create disk images btw, rsync is good cause it synchronises data, so I don't have to copy 870+ gigabytes every time I want to back up, just the files that changed. I do data backups every 1-2 days, and os images every week or so (or after I do major modifications to my system).
>>
>>51652487
what toll do you use
>>
>>51653122
It is bad practice. When a file system is currently in use, there's no telling if the backup may contain some inconsistencies or corrupted data. It's better to do a dd (or dcfldd for a forensically sound image and also outputs status to stdout) on a disk or partition.
>>
>>51653499
Thanks for the info, mate. I haven't even heard about dcfldd, sounds useful.
>>
>>51653598
Np. I forgot to mention to do the backup on disk or portion *not* currently in use, but I'm sure you understood that anyway.

I have a script run on shutdown that double checks everything is up to date, else it does the backup. It's stupidly simple.

I maintain weekly backups. I've never tried to restore it.
>>
>>51653699
Yeah you confused me a bit there by saying it should not be in use in the first sentence then saying just do backups on the partition not saying anything about it being in use in the next sentence, but I figured you meant it should not be in use and I should back up not the mount point, but say /dev/sda5.
>>
>>51653905
Exactly. Sorry for the confusion, mate.

OK so I currently have a 1TB HDD and 256GB SSD in my PC, both of which I back up to a 1TB external drive that I only plug in to backup. Important docs and pictures sync to Google Drive (>inb4 botnet)
I was interested in RAID or setting up RAID on a NAS, but RAID is only redundancy, not a backup. If I have to backup yet another system that's too much hassle (and $$$).
So now I'm considering a constant backup solution (like Time Machine), but my concern is that if I somehow get infected with ransomware (unlikely but can still happen despite Common Sense 2015) those backups will be pointless. This really deters me from setting it up in the first place.

Should I set up an auto backup with an always connected drive? Is there a way I can do this without exposing it to malware? (Like a software switch that ejects/mounts the drive).
Or should I keep just doing the connect/disconnect routine and relying on my memory to backup?

Thanks, /g/

I made a backup yesterday.
