Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners

If you are serious about switching to Linux, use it exclusively for 2 weeks, avoid booting to windows for that period of time, or you are likely to start retreating back to windows instead of getting used to linux as your new home and working on making it feel comfortable

You can safely experience installation process and the basic usage through a virtual machine

I'm using xubuntu right now on netbook as a browser machine. I've been playing with Mint on my desktop and I like it.

Is Mint too babby tier to learn Linux? I want to start actually learning and using stuff like the terminal. Mint seems really slick and nice and there's graphical user interfaces for almost everything.

Is that on top of what you can normally do with Linux or has it locked some stuff out to be 'user-friendly'?

After some lurking I managed to get myself comfortable enough with this to install a file manager and Firefox and even use them. It feels good.

There's a problem though, the computer doesn't detect my USB drive (got my important files there). Could it be because I used it on Windows? Or am I missing something?
>>
>>51646913
This the problem with Manjaro. It makes the install process easy but it's still Arch and all the user unfriendliness that comes with it. You'll have to mount that drive using the terminal.
>>

Got myself a really small screen (1280x600 or something). Friend recommended it to me.

>>
>>51646955
I suppose placing the blame on Arch/Manjaro is not entirely fair. If you had installed Manjaro with one of the big desktop environments like Gnome3 or KDE you'd have more of a Windows experience. With i3 you've set yourself on the minimalist terminal route.
>>
>>51647006
i3 is one of the window managers that users configure themselves. Unless you configured i3, it'd be hard for you to get used to.
You could've gone for xfce/mate/cinnamon/KDE edition for better usability. Otherwise make a base install yourself and build i3 and other things on top of it
>>
>>51646955
I GOT IT! For those that may come across as the same problem, go to your terminal and type
lsblk -f

sudo mkdir /mnt/YOURDIRECTORY

sudo mount -U YOURDRIVEUUID /mnt/YOURDIRECTORY

>>51647040
Yeah but I'm using an Asus EEE PC 1000HE and want to be really minimalistic. It's not my first linux experience, I've used Ubuntu before, but it was constantly bottlenecking and acting really slow.

when you press ctrl+f it paste a sudo in front of your current line

if your line is empty its just sudo

if you write pacman -S butthurt_package_of_GNU
and you press ctrl+f it ads sudo to the beggining of the line and return cursor to your previous position

so if you forgot sudo its just arrow up and ctrl+f

there are many ways to deal with forgotten sudo, but this one is the best
its the fastest and you actually see the command to which you are adding sudo and best part is that you can easiy add sudo even when you notice missing sudo while writting the command...

to explain the code
you are making new widget called
add_sudo (){)

with
zle -N add_sudo you are adding it
and then with bind you are asigning it to ctrl+f key combo

the code inside should be obvious or pointless to explain

thats why the long description of pros in that comment

1. you need to actually write sudo and then additional 3 keypress? Why even bother then? you as well can just uparrow, press home key, write sudo, press enter

2. you cant add sudo when you are in the middle of writing your command when you notice that you forgot, only once you executed it and it failed

3. you cant go beyond the single previous command in your history, you actually not looking at history, just assume the last command is the one...

4. again its fucking whole lot of typing!

That's silly and dumb. If I like the way it works by default then it doesn't matter if I can customize it.

It's also reasonably configurable through gsettings/dconf and has a lot of keybinding support, plus it's the only DE I know of that supports drop-in javascript extensions. The ways that KDE and XFCE open up customization to the user result in cluttered and junky interfaces.

Use whatever works best for you, but don't go whining about shit you don't use because you tried it once and it didn't immediately work exactly the way you were used to.

Extensions and dconf give you a pretty nice amount of room to customize. What's silly and dumb is that you think that configurability is important in a piece of software when you already like the way it works. Software changes, and configurability isn't a solution to the threat of change because there's always the possibility that the devs will change or remove the configurability itself. You always have a choice among UIs, but it's never been a static choice. I don't know why you hate the Windows UI when Microsoft is the king of accomodating its customers' babby duck syndrome.

Frankly, most of the differences between modern DEs are pretty insignificant and internet people seem to be obsessed with them. GNOME 2 isn't that great.

I have a T420, and with Cinnamon the volume buttons, and the special keys - like FN+F8 - showed an icon. It's like the one in OSX I think.
Now, how would I go to obtain that? Do I have to make a script for each keybinding?

Also, should I use XFCE's WM keybinder (I take it's the WM, I don't really know) or xbindkeys? Can't see many option on the shortcut tab in the keyboard setting, so I was wondering if one was better than the other

Mint user here
Whenever I try to unzip archives which contain Chinese/Japanese characters, they're not being properly displayed despite me having language packs installed and being able to type in those languages just fine. When I try to unzip archive, the name changes to boxes like pic related after about 0.5 seconds (it displays properly for a brief moment). I'm using whatever the default Mint software for unpacking stuff is. For the record, I can change the filename back just fine, thing is, it happens to textfiles in the archives too.
Any idea how to fix this? Thanks in advance.

Longtime user of ubuntu up until Unity here. The only thing it offers for web dev is that you can run an apache server with all the bells and whistles right there in the terminal. And I guess all the sysop tools that every distro comes with. Nothing really makes ubuntu special other than that web dev usually means "knows some html" and ubuntu is babby simple to get set up.

So i have a mac. I know that is stupid first off but it was a gift given to me. I wanted to install linux mint. I wiped the hard drive completely clean so there was absolutely no operating system on it. I tried installing mint off of a thumb drive, and instead of partitioning the disk manually, i let the installer do that. When i restarted my computer as i was told to, the computer did not boot into linux mint. I plugged the flashdrive in and booted linux off of the live usb and opened gparted. I saw that boot was a fat32 file system and that it wasnt mounted. If i changed the file system to exfat would it have worked? does the file system matter if there is no operating system on a computer. does the architecture of the cpu or something else in the hardware determine what file system to use?

Anyone know of a guide and complete guide to customizing KDE?

I'm mostly familiar with LXDE, but that is a tad lacking for a full desktop. Cinnamon is nice out of the box, but KDE just looks so pretty and it would be nice to try something new. May stick Cinnamon along side if I get lost, but so many things are named differently. Like I found how to set a workspace widget on the taskbar, it was called pager or something like that.

So its just the little things to tweak it to like nice, render fonts well, and get a nice work flow going.

I'm upgrading my laptop to fedora 23

Save it. I like fedora and have no issues with it, and don't feel like going to the trouble of learning to navigate Debian or Ubuntu.

Anyway, I'm planning on completely wiping my hdd before installing fedora 23, because I'm paranoid about malware and am taking the opportunity to annihilate any that might be on there.

I've got the disk manager formatting the root partition of my hdd now (I'm on a live cd). Is there a better way to wipe the drive?

LXDE is a little lack luster, but my usual go to for low end devices. Not sure on LXQT, it has my interest, but still seems in the unstable realm so I would probably take Cinnamon over it.

XFCE much of /g/ swears by this, but I ran a small laptop off Xubuntu once and it crashed more shit than Vista and I barely added anything on the stock install.

I shall look into i3, but I"m still very considering KDE, which is also based on QT like LXQT anyway. Bulkier yes, but I can imagine it working worse based on the same tech.

Eh. Guess you won't know till you try.
I tried KDE, and even though I though LXDE and XFCE looked bad ootb, KDE looked much worse imo. In the end, my riced KDE looked like my XFCE, so yeah.
Cinnamon, gnome, unity, are DEs which are good and have nice driver support ootb.
If you want a nice desktop experience that looks nice without too much effort just get elementary os with numix and arc. Plenty of eye candy there.

Fair points.

I actually considered elementary, as mac like as it is, it does look very nice.

I don't mind putting some efforts into making it nice so it doesn't have to be out of the box pretty as long as it can get there. I suppose if after a couple months if I find it doesn't work out I can just install another DE. If I recall there is a command to purge out unused libraries, etc for such occasions.

>>51662256
Bit of a stab in the dark, but I know it works on most atoms, a lot of hardware in those off brand devices are pretty stock so that helps, so I would say there is a shot at it. Ubuntu as much as I avoid has some tablet support to it, I think Fedora does too, not sure on openSUSE, but those could be a place to start to get other stuff on. Sounds like there is nothing to lose trying.
