Back when I was in high school they had an orange rubber cover they put over the keyboard so you didn't know what key was what, then they would have us do mavis beacon.

Use all 10 fingers to type and do not look where you are typing. Take typing tests and power through them every day (preferably for 30 minutes or more).

It took me 4 years to go from 20 WPM to 80 WPM but that's because I'm lazy. If you practice daily then you could achieve 80 WPM in 2 years.

pic related is the home row keys. Good luck.

Software engineer. Decent typing is handy. By no means critical, but holy shit, I've actually worked with people who hunt and peck at the keyboard. How can you process complex concepts when you're devoting so much mental energy to simply hitting keys?

I think something, and it's on the screen. While I don't think extreme speeds are important, since any decent SWE is spending more time thinking than typing, I do think it's valuable to have text appear without conscious thought. Until brain implants, this will have to do.

I've known people who argue that "floating" touch typing is better for avoiding RSI.

I dunno. Whatever. IMO, proper posture and a decent mechanical keyboard are the two most important factors.
>>
>>51644243

>learn something useless

Don't teach yourself obscure keyboard layouts with supposedly scientifically supported improvements.

The fact is, you're surrounded by QWERTY keyboards. No, it's not perfect. But the difference between QWERTY, Colemak, and Dvorak is infinitesimal compared to the difference between a shitty membrane keyboard and a decent mechanical keyboard, or a brain implant (WTF 2015 and still using keyboards).

Don't put yourself through daily annoyances for the sake of alpha-geek bragging rights and neckbeard superiority.

P.S. I'm tying this on Dvorak right now.

The guy's friend.

See, somewhere there's a "photographer" (possibly just some guy with a new DSLR) who wants to make a buck. So, he has his friend over and has him pose for some completely random shit.

This is how a friend of mine became a male model. He posed for a Getty Images photoshoot. Of course, it's just a Getty stock images account held by his photographer friend. But whatever.

That's a really dumb reason. I mean, if you said you felt like your pinkies were strained or something, that would make sense. But "oh fuck now where am I" just sounds dumb.

If you don't count my right thumb for space and my left pinky for shift, I only use 4 fingers to type. Three on left and my right hand only uses index finger. I average my typing speed at about 80-85 wpm based on those sites.

i type a lot and i mostly use index and middle fingers. now i am slowly unlearning this to be more efficient, and it's not easy.

i know im late to the thread but::::
background: went from 50wpm to 110wpm
here's my tips: the most important part is accuracy, not speed.
mechanical keyboards are a big plus if you have the money.
type every day, work on accuracy first as I said, and your speed will just develop naturally.
>>
By learning VIM.

wew lad

no but you're kind of right, try to play games that require tons of typing to trade or whatever, you'll get better without even noticing it.

try to not get shitty typing habits though, and as >>51646704 said, accuracy is more important than speed most of the time.

The world where /g/entlemen aren't pussies. Looks like I skipped a dimension, though.

Obviously I mean WPM, 200 CPM is 40 WPM, which is hunt-and-peck tier. Oh, how low /g/ has fallen.

max average has been about 160-170 on big tournamens and for world reconds.

peaks of 200+ are possible for professional typers, but there's not a single chance you yourself type faster than 130WPM AVERAGE.

120wpm here, but 100wpm is more comfy long-term.

There's no trick. Just type. Practice. Don't look at the keys. Mechanical keyboards help because they feel nicer and give more feedback, especially Cherry MX Blue, Green or master race buckling spring maximum clicky: they're not necessary, but they help. You'll develop a feel for where you are, even if you've miskeyed.

Home rows are a meme, if you stick to 'technique' like glue you'll strain your fingers. Just dump them on the keyboard and go and try not to think about it. To avoid carpal tunnel, be comfortable, whatever that means for you: posture, wrist rest/no wrist rest, etc. That's all personal, we're all built different. If you get an ache, stop, don't push through it, don't try too hard.

I've been typing since I was 3. I'm better with a keyboard than I am with a pen, but that's probably true of many of us.
>>
>>51644178
