Has anybody here been crazy enough to try and setup a car subwoofer with amp up for use with your your computer?

I read into it a bit an people generally say to use a spare PSU to convert the 120v to 12v
i dont know if thats a good idea or not

Any help?
>>
Not sure how well it would handle the surges. A cap would solve that.
>>
>>51639467
any idea about grounding?
the amp had a huge ass grounding wire in my car
i dont know if thats only a worry cause it was a car though
>>
>>51639509
Ground is the return, not an earth ground for the chassis. Car is all metal so they use the frame as the common return instead of running another wire to everything.
You just use the ground for the 12V.
>>
>>51639618
should i use a spare PSU or the one in my pc?

thanks for the help
>>
>>51639740
Spare one, if you have one with decent amps on the 12V. What's the wattage of the amp?
You'll need to do the paperclip trick to turn it on.
>>
>>51639781
its a 1500watt

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_12249_JBL-GTO14001.html

heres the full specs
>>
>>51639798
>four 40A fuses
Damn, that 1500W might be legit. You're not going to be able to play that at full volume. Attach it to a sketchy PSU and you risk a fire, too.
>>
>>5163989
huh well then

i have two spare psus
a thermaltake 750w that doesnt send power to either the cpu or mobo

or an offbrand prebuilt acer pc PSU thats probably only around 450w

is there any easy power brick i could go buy to splice into for this
>>
>>51639938
shit took a digit off
>>51639891
>>
>>51639938
>power brick
at most you're going to get 100w unless you find some magical workstation/gaymur laptop one
>>
>>51639969
how high is the risk of breaking shit with shit psus
and what about a psu is good for this

like the rails, wattage etc.
>>
>>51640012
Just get a receiver off craigslist to run them.
>>
Meh, it will work fine as long as your PSU isn't complete shit, and any non-shit PSU will have a overcurrent protection so you're pretty much safe from it destroying your gear. It's a shitty setup though. Random PSU wires everywhere, PSU fan running... only 12V so you won't get the output power you would get in a car which runs at 14.4V or whatever when the engine is on.
>>
>>51640180
>>51640012
alright i got an old receiver and took the car amp out of the equation
i connected it to the center output on my asus external xonar card with music playing through the speakers

but for the life of me i cant get it to act as a sub
i can go into the sound settings and test the output and it works
but if i play music (even in 2.1 mode) it still doesnt even show sound trying to go out the center channel
its stuck in stereo for some raisin

any ideas?
>>
>>51640911
Try posting this in >>>/diy/ too, most of the people here are just memers.

They do stuff too.
>>
>>51640911
um 2.1 mode is only going to send sound out 2 channels of your sound card. Normally a 2.1 speaker set would handle splitting the signal off to the subwoofer.

You could switch to 5.1 mode I guess... I don't think most applications will output to 5.1 though, only movies and such.
>>
Normally you'd have two amplifiers, one driving the satellites and another driving the sub - usually the sub amp is built into the sub. In that scenario you'd connect the satellite amplifier to the stereo output of your PC, then connect the line-level subwoofer output of the satellite amplifier to the input of the sub amplifier.
>>
>>51640911
Hook it up to the sub output, maybe? Center channel isn't a part of 2.1.

>sub is the other channel to center
Ok, I'm an idiot.

If you can't change your speaker config to 2.1, you'll probably want a splitter.
>>
>>51639421
No, car audio is terrible
Thats why i have a dayton audio sub in my car
>>
>>51641015
i do use one amp for speakers and one for sub

i just cant get both amps playing at the same time
>>
>>51641260
If you have a preamp output on one of your amps, then use it as a pass-through to the other amp.
>>
>>51640911
Xonar cards are notorious for that. That and Asus never bothers with updating their drivers unless it's critical. Go look for the UniXonar drivers which allow for native up-conversion from regular stereo.

oh jesus
i finally got it

i got it by connecting my rca out on my dac to rca in on the sub amp
then connecting an rca cable from the tape record channel out to the my speaker amp input

speakers sound fine
but the sub will try and play everything not just bass so it sounds pretty weird

thanks so much for the help guys ill do some more tweaking and see if i can get it perfect
>>
>>51641571
Your sub amp should have a crossover adjustment to exclude the high freqs.

just use a rectifier.

i used a 60amp one for a time when i used a car amp with mine but you should be fine with a 30amp honestly. i finally just switched over to a normal power amp

Quick tip (if your mobo has a sub out port and/or a main amp with one) buy a cheap lower wattage sub from cl then buy a home theater sub use the sub amp from that to power it and there ya go

works just fine for me
