OP give me a way to contact you and make sure the device is not connected to the internet. I'll need some info ( model, serial #'s )from the phone, and you will have to make sure the iphone does not go online until I am done.
I usually charge $50 to do this.
First, find a USB cord you dont care about and cut the pc plug end off. Strip the wires. Then take an extension cord and strip those wires and connect them to the phone USB wires. plug in the extension cord to a socket and then plug the USB into the phone. Give it about 2 minutes. This will initiate a factory reset and you will have your new clean iPhone.

Unfortunately, he did not have enough time to unlock the phone before passing away. Step 1: Identify what kind of charger you have at the bottom? lightning? fatso? if it's lightning continue
Step 2: You need to go to the apple store with the phone. I know what you're thinking, some kind of trap. Wrong
Step 3: Locate an apple product on display and unplug the cable
Step 4: plug the obtained iphone into the charger and wait for the screen to flash white. the phone will go into demo mode and wipe everything on it
Step 5: once the device starts acting like the demo phone, take it up to the assistant and tell them your phone started flashing when you plugged it in. They know that the phone chargers wipe iphones, and will be happy to fix it for you

Don't bother with it, there is basically no way to unlock it, if it was updated to iOS8 or higher. Dissemble it and sell the parts. You'll get more out of it that way, because right now you have a useless brick.
