Basically. It'd be more worthwhile to contribute to something already exists and is worthwhile, or just go and write everything from the ground up to build a better mousetrap than Linux. If you don't have an innovative design that can blow the current paradigm out of the water, don't bother reinventing the wheel when you can improve wheels that already exist.
