When you record something at a funky orientation, your phone just records it as it sees it but then includes metadata to tell it how to reorient the video for proper playback. Unfortunately, this is not standardized whatsoever. Why VLC decides to work for this case of all things I can't answer.

Did at any point do you remember flipping your phone around? If not then, maybe you recorded it in "left hand" landscape while your camera opens in "right hand".
What phone is it? Was auto rotate on?

Nexus 5X, yes auto rotate was on, but i played the file on two different video players, googles video player online and VLC and it played them correctly but not MPC-HC
