Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Just bought a T430
i7-3520m
no RAM (got seller to discount for taking the 4gb that was there out)
500GB HDD

What kind of RAM should I get? I want 16GB.

What kind of SSD can I get while keeping the HDD?
>>
>>51622455
Really, the cheapest 2x8GB kit you can get will work. In this day and age, pretty much all DIMMs are made equal.

Also, if you but the ultrabay SATA compartment, you can insert any SATA SSD you would like and keep the HDD it came with. The other option is to install an mSATA SSD, but those tend to be a little bit more expensive and a little but more finicky.
>>
>>51622455
You can get an mSATA SSD assuming you don't have a WWAN card. Not sure if the --30s had SATA 3 speeds for that yet or if it's still SATA 2 like the --20s, though.

I've been waiting for this thread!

There's a store in the Melbourne (Australia) CBD selling a refurbished X220 for $300 AUD (about $218 USD at the moment). I'm tempted to pull the trigger on this one, but not sure. They've also got a R400 for $150, and a L410 for $230.

It seems T520s are a popular trade in at the moment, as they're all over the place for about $300. Too big though.

I've got some thinking to do!

Too much for what you're getting. The pic isn't an X61 and they never had a widescreen display so I don't understand why in the description it says "WXG". It's going to be 1024x768.

I don't know why people insist on buying from retail stores. Just get one on eBay, anon. Preferably a stripped model for cheap so you can outfit it with an SSD/RAM/CPU/etc as you please for cheaper.

Just chipping in here, I've ordered a few cheap chinashit batteries for other laptops (non thinkpad).

They generally work, sort of. ACPI reporting tends to be a bit screwy, some report 3x actual capacity (and drain rates), while others will report percentage accurately enough but drain/charge and mAh are all listed as zero.

The number one problem though is that I've had a few that will die if you let them drain down too much. After a critical power shutdown event they refuse to take a charge at all. My guess is an UV lockout in the cheap cells used, yeah I could probably crack it open and jump start it but way too much effort for a product that I've only had for two weeks so I ended up returning them.

If you do opt for a chinashit battery, my advice is to run it til it dies while you're still in the refund period.

As for the whole "low-cycle" thing, yeah just like a woman that's great in theory but I've yet to see a seller that actually states the cycle count. All you get is a "Used" or "Pulled from working environment" label with no indication of whether it's been gently used by one owner or if a whole corporation ran a pain train on it.

There are better netbooks out there, and that's saying something. I used one of these at my former part-time job, and it was aggravating to say the least.

A little while ago I actually picked up a used Lenovo S400 because I got tired of lugging my W510 to school every day. The thing cost $250 Canadabux off my local Kijiji and it is, in my opinion, considerably better than the 11e. Bigger screen, more comfortable keyboard, lighter, faster. Practically an Ultrabook.
>>
This is kind of unrelated, but why is the backup utility included with Windows 8 such a massive pile of shit? No system image, no timestamps, it's literally just a script copying and pasting your shit to an external hard drive. I just migrated from my Y510p running Win 8 back to a W520 running Win 7, and I have to say, the old backup utility is just miles ahead in terms of capabilities and final results. What the hell was Microsoft thinking?

It could play skyrim on medium, and crysis on medium with framerates bouncing from 25-45

That's an interesting theory on the UV lockout after discharge. I just assumed the charging chip died in mine. I did crack one open (out of warranty) and all of the cells were still good. Either way, it makes sense to more strictly adhere to charging thresholds if you're going to go chinashit.

I've seen multiple sellers on eBay actually list used batteries with a stats screencap of the design capacity, charged capacity, and # cycles, etc. I wouldn't buy one otherwise.

>>51625205

How much RAM is in it?

I upgraded my T60 (T7200) to 3gb as soon as I received it and it feels great with Lubuntu. I don't know how the T60 would feel with less ram, but I do have an N270 atom/ 512 MB RAM netbook with Lubuntu and it works great for 4chan.

Said netbook was unbearably slow with mainline Ubuntu (Unity), fucking trash. All that unnecessary trans*parency really fucked with it and opening the "quick" menu took like 4 seconds, fucking agonizing.

If it's just web-browsing that's slow, do yourself a favor and install uBlock Origin for basic adblock and uMatrix in default deny. Also don't rice your browser.
>>
>>51625304

Just buy a spare battery and keep both in your laptop bag. Also for home and work use I've recently discovered the joy of just buying 2-3 power adapters and just leaving them plugged in in your usual usage spots (bed, desk, work desk). I dunno if they make em in ~65/90W varieties but I have a couple ~30W car chargers for my netbooks that work great if you realize you forgot to charge while you're on your way to class.

Not him, but having used a Thinkpad as my main machine since starting high school 10 years ago, the Fn/Ctrl placement becomes second nature. I wouldn't worry about getting used to it, you'll gradually unlearn the old habits. I actually get psyched out whenever I get on a computer that doesn't have that layout, just because I'm so used to it.

A couple threads back I saw some anon was trying to lower his power consumption, and he had some sort of utility (I think command-line based?) that would tell him how much power was being used by the screen, fans, cpu, etc.

What was the name of that utility and how would I get it in Lubuntu? I can get overall draw (currently 12 W) from System Tools -> System Profiler and Benchmark -> Battery, but I'd like an itemized readout if only to satisfy my own curiosity.

Just realized this is sort of misleading - the x200 did not come with hard drive or battery. So far I've added a 60 GB SSD for $30 and a $12 chinkshit battery so my total cost is around $75, which still fits in your threshold.

If I had to pay shipping on the laptop that would have brought it up to $90 total. I also could have saved some $$$ by going with a mechanical HD or spent more for a genuine battery.

Hello, /tpg/

I'm the guy from Brazil that has a large supply of thinkpads to sell.

I'll sum up the deal here.

Yesterday I found out that I have access to a large pool of thinkpads that wouldn't leave the country without a seller (me). These thinkpads are in good to excellent condition.

I can give you the price listed in non-bold font in http://ktgee.net/tpg or cheaper. I said that I could go $15 cheaper than that in some cases, but it might be even more.

Some drawbacks, though.

Firstly, shipping.

According to my post office, I would spend about $40 to send an item of 3 kg (6.6 pounds - large estimative) and a bit larger than a T430 (to house accessories). It would take 19 to 23 business days to reach NY or San Francisco (it appears to be independent of inner US distance). For $10 more, you could have EMS and it would be delivered in 8 to 12 days.

That's the biggest drawback, honestly.

The other one is that the keyboard is in portuguese-brazilian. Attached picture shows the layout (random image from google). If it's a deal breaker to you, I can buy a new one with the US layout for around 31 dollars (around the same price you would pay from China) but I buy it from local sellers, so you don't have to wait. If a deal I get is really good (after all, I will have to pay for these thinkpads), I can include either the keyboard or shipping for free.

Finally, there's the socket type, but I think this is the smallest issue.
http://www.worldstandards.eu/electricity/plugs-and-sockets/
Brazil uses Type A, B and C (plus the new standard that is replacing all of them, type N). The power brick that comes with thinkpads are usually type C. If your country uses another, I can include a free adapter, you would just have to specify which.

Voltage is bivolt (110-220), so it shouldn't be a problem.

Next post I'll post a deal and check if there's any interest. Unfortunately, I don't have a large capital to start with, so I will have to purchase each one as needed.

>>51628597

I DO NOT plan to make this a market thread, btw. I'll post a deal to check interest, make my ebay page and then I'll just post unlisted deals in a pastebin or google docs.

(Was going to list a X230, but it appears it's just best you guys buy it from ebay - price is nearly the same.)

Intel Core I5 2520M - 2.5 GHz
Intel HD Graphics 3000
Ram 4GB DDR3
HD 320GB
12,5 Inches (not sure on type, will check when it gets here. probably not IPS)

Price is $200 for Thinkpad + power brick +battery.
Add $30 if you want me to switch the keyboard.
+ shipping ($40 max for standard shipping, see >>51628597)
Battery can be either pretty good (nearly unused) or half as effective as first charge. I can't check yet.

I have 2 models with 4GB DDR3 and 2 with 2 GB DDR3. My contact ensures me good to excellent condition.

Any interest? Anything you would like to add, any suggestions?

I might as well check if they have HP elites, too.
>>

I can sell a HP elitebook 8470p for $330. Check the buyer's guide.

That's all for now. I'll check later to see if there's any interest. If you want to contact me directly, either to check some of the stuff I said or to ask if I have certain model, feel free to ask.

Hey guys,

I'm currently using an 2008 X60 Tablet (Windows 10 running smoothly except for wifi fuckups when returning from sleep)

I plan to switch to something newer. Definitely need a convertible with pen, but have never used anything newer than x200 tablet.

I'd hope to get a slimmer, lighter version of my good old x60t that runs for hours (taking notes and scrolling documents on less-than-full brightness)
I'd also get a corresponding docking station.

Price isn't necessarily an issue, I'd also go for the newest stuff, in case it's worth the money.

Regards,

Also, when it says you can't solder the lithium cells directly, you actually can. Just be VERY careful not to overheat the cells. The best way is to apply solder on the cable/whatever and then, while the solder is still liquid, attach the wire with solder to the cell and the blow cold air to forcefully solidify it fast.

When I gaze into X201's bright and joyful display, I see an aspiring girl with alluding bunny ears and an insatiable thirst for adventure. The X220 on the other hand looks like the same girl 10 years after marriage. She's grown cold and now rarely shows her true emotions, her body's gotten fat and even her hinges have widened.

But it can't be all about appearances, right? Her mind has matured a lot since the early days and her endurance has improved too. She can run circles around her younger self now, even when equipped with the 6-cell battery.

How can one decide between the two? If the IPS version were available to me this would probably settle it, but it isn't. That what makes it such a tough call.

You carry the nigga with you. Work with the screen you're given while commuting or whatever.
Plug the laptop to a 24 inch 1440p screen at work.

Didn't even know the regular x220 had Pentiums. Oh wait, they don't.

It's a Core 2 Duo
>>
>>51648417
There are no x220 with core2 duos.
They all have i-something.

I think you have a x200 or something.

>>51648425
I did say twice that it is a X200, read again to check

I noticed something interesting with my T420.
After moving it around my sound card stopped being detected.
I had to turn it off and shake it a little then it came back.
Is that a known issue?

Sounds like the X220 is a good price (I don't know straya prices well), I sold an X220 via ebay for that price in 'murrika.

I wouldn't bother on that L410, R400 is a bit pricey.

No, nearly no laptop is like that. No mobo swaps are possible either, so you're stuck with HD whatever it was graphics but theres that BIOS mod that will let you use 3rd gen Core CPUs.
I'm still weary about it, haven't heard much about it other than in theory/rumour.

Get a Ciniq

>>51634131
Damn you did good.
With a warranty from Lenovo right?
>>
>>51648667
Probably a faulty connection inside.
>>
>>51648331
Does your definition of "nice" include cracked casings and stained displays? Because I have yet to see a decent x201 go near 100€, let alone x220. Where do you people find such deals?
>>
>>51648443
alright before installing any other os on it i booted up ubuntu live from usb to check it works, works well except battery sadly seems to be crap, looks like it does not take a charge and flashes orange light only. not a problem though, this machine will most likely be on charger mostly. other than the battery it works great

Grades A to B+.
No cracks.

There are a lot of dealers outside of Ebay if you know how to search for them.

Stay away from german thinkpads.
