with the recent threads and news about ransom ware, it's come to my attention that I should probably start backing up my data. I have a 256Gb of storage Rmbp, what's a good external hard drive to use? I saw they have 1tb ones on Amazon the other day for ~50 dollars

p-p-plz respond

I have two, very good.

That wouldn't really protect against ransomware. You need append-only backups.

Don't buy anything that needs external power. Rather get 2 two tera byte hdd

I was in the same position as you until today. Your thread made me get off my ass and start backing shit up. I settled with bup, which can be used both in a push and pull mode. I went with pushing for now, but opted to run the backup scripts as a privileged user to avoid things like ransomware getting access to the SSH key and wrecking the backup repo. I also added the remote backup user to a chroot jail to reduce impact in the event that such a thing does happen.

Or you could stop torrenting shit, visiting shady pornsites and opening dubious email attachments
>>
>>51615866
Just hook up a password protected NAS to your network with a 60 second inactivity sign out and drop all your important stuff on there. Without write access, ransomware can't do shit but you can always access your files.

You can make your own or be lazy and buy one from WD, they're cheap and some of them have 2 slots in case a harddrive fails.

>stop torrenting shit
That's unrealistic

or just use this

If you are serious about back up drives, you would use standard desktop drives with a dock, because many of those external hard drives are a pain in the ass to recover data from because of proprietary interfaces on the actual hard drive.

You can either get an enclosure similar to this :
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182155&cm_re=external_hard_drive_dock-_-17-182-155-_-Product

or a docking station in which you insert the drive into similar to this:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153071&cm_re=external_hard_drive_dock-_-17-153-071-_-Product

Actually those 3TB Toshiba Canvio drives are better priced than internal HDs. As an external drive they completely suck, but that's due to the SATA to USB adapter in them being shitty. The hard drives themselves are perfectly fine for bulk storage. All you need to do is break open the enclosure, and remove the HD.

It's pretty easy to open them, but it may not be readily apparent exactly how just by looking at it. They aren't meant to be opened after all. Just be careful not to stab or slice your hand open doing it.

Which of the two is more convenient for archiving?

I'm op, I don't know what this means. Please help I'm just starting to get into tech, hence mac.
So I'd buy an external drive, use one of these as the new enclosure because of better connection?

>enclosure
get 3.5inch drives
get this
use as external drive

>dock
get 3.5 HDDs
get this
plug in
plop drive in & backup

Thank you friend

>ransomware just waits indefinite time to map your external hard drives.
>activates when the largest one is plugged in
>encrypts the external hard drive too

I don't know ransomware but this is how I would write one.
>>
you already bought a rmbp, quadruple redundancy 1TB MLC SSDs or Bust
>>
>>51618706
I don't torrent.
>>
>>51627666

They encrypt every document and picture file on every mounted drive.

Plug in another and it gets hit too.

Not sure if it spreads through drives too, but I would suspect it would.
>>
>>51627774
Yeah, so an external backup drive that you mount directly is not effective against ransomware.
>>
>>51618465

It spreads through ads.

Youtube was even infected for awhile.

If you're not using an adblocker you have only yourself to blame

I've had a ransomware infection before but it only encrypted the os harddrive, I keep all my data on another drive so I just reinstalled windows and 30 min later my pc was fine and I had all my files.
>>
>>51615866
i always read "rmbp" as "raspberry macbook pro"
>>
Is WD better than Seagate as far as external hd's?
I think both are on sale.
