My Samsung Gear VR will not be here for about a month, so I ordered a $20 3dP product based on google cardboard to use in the meantime. My S6 Edge seems perfect for the task.

It isn't meant to work on any other phones, android or iOS, or any other mobile OS.
Also, its sold out pretty fucking quick and I am going to be ordering one myself personally. So I highly doubt it's DOA.
I've ordered a $20 ps3 style bluetooth controller on the assumption that there are/will be games available where such a controller heightens the gaming experience.

lets be honest, for what it is, a VR headset that only works on the latest flagship samsung phones, it is selling extremely well.
The target market is small, so obviously not everyone is going to run out and get one because it requires a $600+ phone to operate.
If you already have that phone though, $100 for the headset itself is an easy purchase to make, it is by far the best mobile VR experience you can have at the moment.

Basically the movie and TV industry wont let HD content be played back in that manner on current devices, but even without the industry blocking higher res content, the phone itself isn't powerful enough to do VR for extended periods of time in high res.

I've ordered the device and expect, based on comments by spokespersons for Samsung, that the Gear VR will be compatible with future flagship samsung devices. Since I am an android/samsung guy I expect to get longer use out of the device than most consumers. Not terribly interested in the long term commercial success of the accessory, but it was a no brainer for me since I already have an S6 edge.

Not to your face, but that's 100% what oculus sees it as. The rift isn't out yet and it will cost $400+ and require a $1000+ computer.
The whole reason they partnered with samsung was to get a decent VR demo out into people's hands, without requiring a $500 headset and a $1000 computer. The GearVR is exactly that, a small mobile tech demo that runs off your phone. If you already have the S6 or note5 you'd be pretty stupid NOT to pick up the GearVR if you have even the slightest interest in VR.
