This.
Come back in a couple of years it you want SSD for storage.

Most games are 30-40gb nowdays.
Are you retarded? Even a 500GB SSD is too small nowdays.

It's a meme for me.
I'll wait until unified memory becomes a thing or at least until I can replace my storage COMPLETELY with SSDs without spending a gorillion.
All or nothing
So everyone who bought an 850 evo will start making threads here?

yeah and when you told your exgf that she left your sorry ass

you did in my fantasy
How are the Transcend SSD?
Hey I got one today too! I've been stuck on a traditional never ever cleaned up harddrive and this speed is fantastic.

Intel
>>51612342
do people actually believe this or is this a counter-meme for trolling?
>>51612832
the fact of the matter is only 4 companies make the damn nand anyway so all you're buying is a specific combination of memory and that manufacturer's controller.
Samsung, sandisk (toshiba), crucial and intel are all fine.
even the off brand ones will probably work out, your chance of encountering quality control or customer service issues is just somewhat higher
>>51612468
>2x 250GB 850 EVO (one for boot, one for Steam games)
why the fuck would you do this? it's cheaper to get a 500GB, and outside of benchmarks there's no way you're saturating the bus.
>>51612553

SSDs are still too expensive for mass storage though
They've come a long long way but the HDD is still the go to for mass storage of media.
>>51612282
You're supposed to reinstall it over and over obviously causing you to wear it down and have to buy one again right away.
>>51613020
the SAS drives in my EMCs would like a word with you

>>51613044
>SSDs are still too expensive for mass storage though
Only if you are unemployed.
>>51613058
>>51613081
Ok in this case the OP wasnt clear enough, SSD already replaced most of the main functions of HDDs. In case of SSDs replacing HDDs for mass storage of media and stuff, that day will never come, HDDs will always be cheaper for mass storage.
>>51613156
>main functions of HDD
the main function of an HDD is mass storage.
So before I leave what is better for the buck? 120gb or 250gb Evo 850?
>>51613212
You take the price and divide that by amount of storage.
This yields the cost per GB.
I can't even believe I have to tell you this.
>>51612548
Probably meant 15.
>>51613130

>>51613020

the amount of strain HDDs go through would kill an SSD in months

Sorry anon for my ignorance its that I never bought a ssd before. I only buy hd since they are cheaper but there are alot of good deals today so I decided to snag one.
>>51612089
Stop replying to this thread retard
>>51612938
Because I bought one when I built my PC, and then about a month ago Microcenter had them on sale for $150 with a download code for Assassin's Creed Syndicate. It seemed like a decent deal, and I had open SATA ports so I said fuck it and bought a second one even though I really didn't need it.
>>51613269
>the amount of strain HDDs go through would kill an SSD in months
This actually occurs if you use them in NAS, you'll kill them quite quickly. The current paradigm is to use tiered storage that moves the blocks down from volatile memory to flash memory, then physical hard disks (and possibly tape archives) based on the age of the data.
The SSDs end up getting replaced far more often per disk-hour of operation but you have far fewer SSDs than platter drives.
>>51613277
go 250gb at least.
>>51613297
alright, fair enough
Do SSDs have a different total write cap? Also, newer=better?

>>51613409
>Do SSDs have a different total write cap
Like, MTTF? SSDs are on par with HDD in that regard for consumer usage.
>newer=better?
This is generally true of most technology
>>51613431
Thanks for replying.
I looked into MTTF & MTBF and that's important to know for real-time critical systems. Of course, my pleb CS university doesn't even mention that.
>>51613549
>real-time critical systems.
if it's that important you use RAID, just like with a physical disk.
>>51612089
>People are going to keep saying it's a meme even after they 100% replace HDDs
>YFW there are going to be people do deluded, they will go out of their way to pay MORE for HDDs than SSDs because "it's better for storage" or "I don't trust nonphysical storage" or other stupid shit
The same thing happened in video games. Stupid people get mad if a game is 60fps because it's not cinematic. They legit think bad performance is good.
See: The Last of Us
>>51613430
No, still rated at 75tb. Firmware is probably decent now though, despite the flash still being TLC.
