Has anyone here made a custom keyboard with a Teensy? How would one go about adding LED backlighting to it? I'd like to add RGB lighting to the case of the keyboard as well as within each switch (if possible, if not, then just regular lighting within the switch)
>>
I want a thick, heavy aluminum cased full-size keyboard with standard ANSI layout. Preferably with green switches.

Don't give a shit about backlit, and would vastly prefer an unlit keyboard. I don't care about the keycaps since I like buying my own blank thick pbt keycaps.

What can I get?
>>
>>51605658
The reason to get a teensy is the TMK firmware or one of its forks. In this firmware there will be some basic backlighting options, but no RGB support. In fact, there exist no custom keyboards/firmware with in-switch RGB LED controls.

>>51605690
There are full, aftermarket Al cases for some TKLs (Filcos come to mind) and a lot of options for 60% boards.

A lot of the higher-end customs also come with Al cases, so check the IC and GB pages on GH.
>>
Copped a Rapoo KX for 15usd yesterday.

Is it decent? I'm not even sure it's using proper Kailh switches to be honest but I've been meaning to buy a wireless secondary for some time now.

i can't find a mechanical keyboard that fits my specs for shit

i'm looking for a TKL or 70-75% keyboard with browns and a white and/or off-white color scheme

suggestions? HHKB and pok3r are a bit small for my tastes

You haven't been searching pretty hard.

I'm just coming off a crappy laptop, and I've found that I've become extremely used to insanely short travel time on keyboards. Is there anything mechanical that matches this? Should I get cherry reds with large o-rings? A short key travel is the primary thing i'm concerned with.
>>
>>51606464
You don't want Cherry MX or its clones, period. You could look at ML switches, but you're probably best off sticking with scissor switches.
>>
>>51606464
Either try to get used to farther travel distance (it's not hard, it took me like a day) or stick with chiclet keys

typing i'm not finding an issue, But I play World of Warcraft, which is 90% muscle memory, and I've been gaming on a chiclet keyboard for 2 years. The long travel distance is messing me up.

>Any advice there?
Whatever laptop you're using.
>>
>>51606762
Let me clarify - I moved from a crappy cheap laptop to a gaming desktop. I have an old rubber dome keyboard to use for the desktop for now, and I'm thinking of upgrading.
>>
>>51606721

>>
>>51606835
How's CS:GO with clears? I'm currently using blues and waiting for my WASD clears to arrive. Originally, I planned on using the latter at work, but I'm wondering whether stutterstepping with clears is easier.
>>
>>51607200
having used both, I'd say stutterstepping with blues is probably a bit easier, but you'll be fine with clears. I play cs with clears all the time, no problems, feels fine

>>51607480
>>51607432
I'd heard that in mechs the switch activates only once, when the key is pressed. To do it again you need to release it and then press.

Is that right?
>>
>>51607576
>Is that right?
No you fucking retard. A switch is a switch, it switches something on and off. When you press it it's on and turns off when you release it, regardless of the type of switch.
>>
>>51607589
What i'm asking is, is it activated the whole time it is pressed? Or does it activate only once when it is pressed?

that is, does it send a signal once, or repeatedly?
>>
>>51607667
How do you cope in day to day life being this fucking retarded?
>>
>>51607667
It sends a signal once, and if you hold it down, it sends the same signal repeatedly. On the firmware/software side you can change the rate of repeats and the required time needed to hold it down in order for it to begin repeating, but be aware that this is keyboard dependent. There are some keyboards that will let you do this, and some keyboards that will not let you do this.

This is what I was expecting.

thanks.

You don't.

First, not even japanese use direct kana input, the use microsoft ime. A lot of modern Japanese boards don't even print the kana anymore.

Second. the only readily available sets are ugly as shit.

Third, the JIS layout is different from ansi or iso. Even if you get keys from a doner japanese board they wont match up.

Should I get the Razer Black Widow or the Logitech g910 ? Or are they both shit?

I have cash now and I never bought a keyboard by myself.
I already read the Buyers Guide, but that doesnt really help, just shows some keyboards.
I want to pay something about 100€ for a full mechanical keyboard OR one without the tenkeys on the right.

Im really new to mechanical keyboard, but I really like the ones that click and where you know when you actually press the button. I hate the ones that have something like a silencer that makes it feel like pressing balls.

Please help me /g/entoo-men, even if you dont have to

i found an old mechanical keyboard, with what i would best guess is using white alps switches.
the keyboard itself and everything works fine after i cut the at cord and replaced it with a ps/2 cable, but the switches feel really really different from key to key. very hard to press. would my best chance to fix it just to open every switch individually and clean it out + lube?
>>
>>51611208
Corsair are very focused on the gamer market but they still make solid stuff with genuine Cherry switches. Refurb should be alright since it's not really a sensitive piece of hardware.

Don't expect to be able to get aftermarket stuff like fancy keycaps for it and you should be fine. Not everyone wants to go that deep anyway.

>>51611329

I'm a mechanical keyboard virgin, there are some good prices on mechanical keyboards today (cyber monday) and I was just wondering if you guys could help me out with switch selection a bit. I'd be using the keyboard for both gaming and typing. Typically, when typing, I go with a "hard and fast" approach and will bottom out the keys with considerable force each keystroke. I'd prefer one of the "quieter" options as it's pretty loud when I type on even chiclet and rubber dome keyboards.
>>
>>51613133

>>
>>51613639
>quiet
Blue, green and bucking spring are out (loud switches).

>hard and fast
Red and brown are out (light weight switches).

This leaves...

Clear - Has a bump you can feel when it activates. It's the heavy version of a brown meaning it will be snappier and resist your heavy clacking better. A good compromise between typing and gaming. I'd pick this for you.

Black - No feedback at all (just smooth). Usually marketed as a "gaming" switch since you can "ride" the activation point to trigger it multiple times. Most people would not like these for typing, though.

Topre 55g - The superior tactile switch, but probably way out of your budget. /g/ would also make fun of you since it's a mech/rubber dome hybrid.

Not really, unless you're willing to spend 200 something bucks on a cherry mx board 6.0 with realkey technology.

Is there any way to get a WASD v2 in Europe without paying out of my ass? I can't do 50 bucks for shipping. Or I could, but I refuse to. And that's even before any possible toll fees.
Still, it's so simplistic, neat and perfect...
Any alternatives? Full-sized, no fancy gimmicks, MX browns?

Picked up a logitech G710 for 50 bucks plus a 2 year replacement plan from best buy
Loving the blues on this but the con is the full plastic body. Would have been better with aluminum keys but for 50 dollars I can't complain.
>>
>>51618736
Personally I think they feel a bit weird. The spherical top and slanted sides really decrease the strike area.
They also aren't profiled so the entire keyboard ends up being much flatter which is odd but tolerable.
They aren't even that thick since they were designed to save on material cost.

I took mine off after two weeks.

SA caps fix all of this.
>>
>>51619597
Also the keyboard is fairly bulky, had unnecessary side buttons which can be customized but for someone accustomed to a WASD keyboard are merely gimmicks. Quite a few gimmick buttons but I do like the volume control wheel. Overall a solid 7.5 to 8/10. I wouldn't buy it for the standard price of 130 though.

The RK9000 is made by Costar, so it's very well-built. The CM Quickfire XT is the same and five dollars less, though the font on the caps is fucking awful. Assuming you're going to get an aftermarket set though, that doesn't matter.

Not him but I was thinking of getting that CM keyboard. The only thing I didn't like was that it was not backlit. So then I moved on to the CM Storm QuickFire Ultimate. But then for that price I ended up getting a corsair instead. Plus I didn't like the fire symbol that was on it.

I've never had a mechanical keyboard before, so I have a question:

With cherry MX blue switches, is it not possible to hover just above the point that the key registers for the purpose of double tapping? Would I need browns or a linear switch for that?

Also, why can't I find a keyboard that matches my specs? I just want dedicated media keys on a full size keyboard and whatever switches I end up on, either blue or brown. Nothing has dedicated media keys it seems like, and so many boards are tenkeyless or smaller cancer.
>>
>>51621577

It's an ergonomic advantage, as your hands don't need to be so far apart (less reaching). The numpad is duplicated across the top row. TKLs simply look nicer, as well.
>>
>>51622457
unless you're doing accounting or data entry of some sort, you don't need it.

So I'm interested in a full size mech board having never owned one previously.
I saw that the Vortex/KBT One is in the recommended list and I found one for $109AUD which seems cheap.

Lots of people are talking about the Race and Poker models but not this one.

Code keyboard ships with blank OS keys, despite having an LED for those keys. They do this specifically because they want to market toward users of every OS. Rather than shitty branding or a proprietary OS keycap, they just used blanks to stay neutral. I just think it's a waste to not have something shining through.

I'd rather just a plain windows key and not fucking le may may key caps. don't understand why they're so hard to find.

Aftermarket backlit sets aren't common. Vortex makes a full set of PBT+POM doubleshots, which are probably an upgrade over whatever comes stock on the Code.
