So, there is a bug with the new Crimson drivers that AMD released (not beta, final release) that lock your GPU fan speed and because of this, many users have reported playing for extended periods of time with their fans locked to 20%.

Others, like me, got their GPU burned, in my case it didn't even reboot the PC, it just crashed the screen graphics (orange bars) and I had to manually turn off the computer. When I opened the case the GPU was so hot I couldn't even remove it from the PCI-e and had to wait until it was cool enough.

So now we have no word from AMD so far, and they haven't pushed a fix for their drivers yet, so it keeps happening to other people.

I have to admit I'm really sad that I lost my 280x and my money, because I have no warranty anymore and it seems it's gone forever, I'm not sure I can trust AMD after this.

Oh well, I was about to get a 980 ti anyway. I've been team Red for years now but with all their incompetence lately (and NVIDIA using successful Jew tactics) this is honestly the last straw.
>>
>not monitoring your temps periodically with an OSD game
>not having a second monitor to glance at for temp readings
>not having a Bluetooth app on phone to monitor temps
>NOT MONITORING YOUR GPU IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM AFTER DRIVER UPDATE

You and everyone else asked for this. I'm not saying that AMD isn't responsible, because that's evident. But you should know better than to trust a driver update after all of these major changes they've pushed to their drivers recently.

You won't make that mistake next time.
>>

>not monitoring your temps periodically with an OSD game

A lot of games anti hack features detect these as a false positive.

You're not going to get banned for using afterburner & rivatuner faggot.

Besides, you can still tab out for a quick check in between "matches" or whatever they're called in whatever game you're playing.

It's your fault for blindly trusting a driver update from either AMD or Nvidia. Both have shit history of fucking people with drivers.
>>
>>51601210

The fault is on AMD 100%, this can easily brick any AMD card, including ones in OEM systems where users were never meant to monitor temps constantly.

A lot of people dont overclock and as such dont need to monitor temps. The card should cut off after reaching TJMax.....

I think that this is really the beginning of the end for AMD, I mean honestly, how can anyone take them seriously anymore?

There will be no compensation for anyone affected and all those burned customers WILL go to Nvidia.

As if AMD needed anymore market share loss....

If there is any compensation it will only come as a result of a class action lawsuit 3+ years from now...
>>

>It's your fault

No its not, as I dont buy AMD garbage, and for good reason.

This is wrong. This issue does ONLY happen when you active AMD Overdrive in the driver control panel, AND used another software to alter the GPU fan curve before installing Crimson.

This is twice over your own fault.

How does it even fry a card in times of thermal throttling?
>>
I have an MSI R9 390X. My fan profile is fine and adjusts accordingly per temperature.

I use MSI Afterburner for custom fan profile though. Although I'm most likely going to rollback to 15.11.1 because Crimson crashes while there is DX plugins like onscreen display or recorders. It doesn't crash the display drivers but the display drivers in Crimson are literally just 15.11.1 display drivers with a few more bugs.
>>
AMD is aware of isolated reports of low fan states following the installation of Radeon Software ‘Crimson Edition’ on select Radeon GPUs. Its engineering teams have identified and addressed this issue, and AMD intends to release a hotfix on amd.com this coming Monday, November 30th.

I can't be the only one who finds it fucking hysterical that the AMD has bad drivers meme has been totally validated. Friend of mine gave me so much shit about getting a 980ti when he "got the cheaper AMD." Never mind that I needed cuda tech at the time. It's just been a running joke between us for a while.

Now I'm going to get at least 3 years of quality troll food out of this one. Literally a free I win button in any flame fest for the next 6 months.

Legitimately sucks for those of you with destroyed hardware, but god damn this is such high quality shitpost material I almost feel guilty for using it. It's too easy.

Took this from a reply in an article:

"Lol this got blown way out of perspective all over the internet, There is currently a bug in the crimson drivers that stops the fans of certain cards from exceeding 20%. While this sounds bad it really isn't. AMD cards have thermal protection built into the hardware and any card will throttle once it reaches it's thermal limit waaaay before it reaches a temp that could damage the card.

As an example I can switch the fans on my 290X off and all that will happen is once it reaches 95c which is the standard operating temp for a reference 290/x. It will start to throttle the core in order to keep the temp at 95c if for some reason it can't and the card exceeds 98c it will instantly shut itself down to protect itself from damage which results in the infamous "Black Screen"

There is currently a bunch of people on reddit claiming this fan bug have killed their cards in the obvious hope that AMD will RMA it for a brand new or better model of the card they already own.

News websites are eating this story up and spewing a crap load of misinformation online. Reddit seems to have finally caught on to this and people that actually know a thing or two about tech have started to explain how anyone who claims their card died because of this bug are talking out of their anus."

So which is true?
>>
>>51603364
>falling for the meme
>>
>>51603364
Either way, it's user error.
>>
>>51603398
I wouldnt call it user error. There's no disclaimer when downloading a driver that says "Always measure the temperature of your graphics card". in fact im not sure there's anything in the drivers that allows you to watch your card's temperature. you have to get 3rd party software.

in any case the drivers are supposed to be safe enough to not fucking burn your card.
Sure, someone more tech savvy will be able to save his card in such a case of failing drivers by being smart and monitoring temperatures - but you can't in anyway demand or take it as granted that everyone will.
>>
>>51601210
>>51603258
> Literal victim blaming
>>
>>51603364
This has been my experience as well. Nvidia, AMD or Intel, they all have thermal throttling built in.
Else it'd be fucking retarded, how much does it cost to implement and how much money are you going to save from repairing blowed cards just because the fan died?

All I see is people trying to get their dead card RMA'd because it "suddenly" died on them.

Yeah, right.
>>
>>51603456
What I mean is that no matter if chips are getting damaged or not, the only time this seems to be happening is if people are overclocking or messing with fan speeds and then not resetting before installing the new drivers. See >>51603325
>>
>>51603464
When your car has a check engine light, you should probably look to see if it's on or not. Take care of your shit. It is his fault for letting it fry the GPU. It's not his fault the problem happened, it's his fault he didn't do anything to save his hardware.
>>
>>51603493
Ahh I see. I hadn't noticed that. Yes you're right in this case. it is definitely user error.
>>
>>51603084
>>51603133
No, pretty much any deviation from AMD reference fanspeed will trigger this bug. People who use Afterburner/Precision to control their fan and have never touched Overdrive have been hit by it. People who used the new game-specific overclock and fanspeed feature in Crimson have been hit by it. It can happen if you use Overdrive and reset clocks to default. Some people have had problems with Crimson forgetting their settings, and if your cooler isn't reference AMD you can get the issue without even touching anything related to OC or fanspeed.
>>
>>51603562
Cars have check engine lights. GPUs don't. What the fuck are you talking about?

What car forces you to install and configure extra software to have a check engine light? And then forces you to spend a few hundred more on a screen to look at it while driving?

I find that impossible.
I find it impossible that with no fan on at all the card would even go over 100C/actual dangerous temps in that situation. (some brands of GTX 480s were running 105C nonstop on release)

I've ran a reference board, cheap, shitty cooler 7770 and 7850 at a ridiculous BIOS modified maximum power draw load 24/7 for three weeks doing neural net simulation.
It was 40C in my house. Yes, 40C, with the temps in the PC's room sometimes hitting 43.

The cards were always at 98-99C and they never clocked down, I kept Afterburner logs of the performance.
Nothing happened. They could still overclock the same as when I took them out of the box. No crashes, no glitches, nothing. They worked fine.

>was so hot I couldn't take it out
Yeah a fucking GPU core at 90C after just a couple minutes will still be hot, you fucking pussy.
The rest of the card (that you'd touch - the fucking sides) will hardly be 15C more than ambient, were you trying to pull it out by the actual heatsink? (how did you contact the sink directly, did you pull the fan off with the card still installed?) Were your hands on the GPU-core part of the backplate? (Fucking why???)

This post REEKS of either retardation or, more likely, Nvidia shilling.
>>
>>51603690
>and have never touched Overdrive
Are you sure? I read thread on reddit yesterday, there were few retards who "didnt touch nuffin", then they admit they did turn Overdrive on, but "only to try interface out, didn't change nuffin, doesn't count".
So, I still think all this is Overdrive related. Using 280x with Afterburner right now, no problems.

Huh, should I install an old AMD card in my PC and tell them it caught fire?

No-ones card has broken or burned, anyone claiming their had is a lying shit. There's overheat protection built into every AMD card made in the last 8 - 10 years, if it gets over 130 degrees Celsius, it just turns the PC off. Thats no-where near hot enough to brick anything.

You can easily test this by just removing your cooler from your card and turning the PC on. It'll switch itself off again sharpish. I have done this (accidentally, obviously, because I was stoned and being retarded), and gone through several boot cycles before my dumb ass realised what was wrong. Card still works perfectly fine.

its just fucking idiot redditors jumping on a bandwagon and hoping AMD will replace their shitty 5 year old card with a Fury X or some shit.

Saying all that though, AMD needs to sort out these things before pushing an official driver out. These issues WERE NOT in the betas so should not have been in the release.

HIS IceQ 6770. Radeon Crimson Beta 15.11.1, Windows 10 Pro x64, and Unigine Valley.

Run #1 without messing around Radeon Settings (OC via AB, never messed with fan profile on Radeon Settings), works as expected.

Run #2, started to mess around with Radeon Settings fan speed, manually limiting to 20% to trigger GPU reset. GPU resets as expected at 94 degrees celsius. I re-enabled automatic fan control, then I put the PC into sleep.

Run #3 after waking from sleep, Radeon Settings started to act weird. Fan control reverted to manual at 20%, then I put it back to auto and re-ran the benchmark, works as expected. PC then goes to sleep.

Run #4 after waking, fan control still reverts to manual, but goes to 100% instead of 20%.

Conclusion?

The bug is there and can be reproduced.

It's close to impossible to burn your card from the bug itself.

Why? A 6770 is a rebrand from 5770, which lacked PowerTune whatsoever, so my card does not even have any thermal throttling feature, but it does have a temperature reset and shutdown.

At 94 degrees celsius, the card automatically resets (it did NOT crash as the driver did not show a crash notification).

So basically, if a card that lacked thermal throttling is able to survive from heat, I personally think it's impossible for 280X's or 7970's to burn to death.

Should have called the drivers "AMD Winter Edition" not this Crimson nonsense.

Just swapped out my 770 for an XFX 390.

0 problems here, apart from the fact that my MSI onboard audio is shit and if i place the card in the lower PCI slot instead of the upper one i get static noise in games.

i got a r9 380 withe the crimson driver installed, the only thing that saved me is the outside temperature touching 0° degrees Celsius. btw the card was on 60° celsius under load while playing the witcher 3 it's not too hot i think

This is hilarious because nvidia is the "it burns your house down meme"

This is a severe image damage for AMD damn

>I mean honestly, how can anyone take them seriously anymore?

Dunno man, the same way people still take Nvidia seriously after they released GPU-frying drivers several times in the past I guess?
>>
Well at least the fan speed is still higher than their marketshare.

>retarded children somehow manage to kill their cards
>everyone blames AMD's drivers
>everyone believes the memes, no one buys AMD anymore
>AMD goes bankrupt

A company getting killed by the idiocy of its own customers

It's hilarious and sad at the same time

is there a hotfix yet?
i oc'd my 390 a bit, reseted settings, after every restart they are back at oc-clocks + fan at 42%
wouldn't be that bad but i wanted to take my pc back to the shop today and get the 390 replaced because the coilwhine is bad
>>
>>51612292
If you got coil whine, that's not your GPU that's bad, but your PSU. Too much ripple.
Get something like a RM1000x or a Snow White 750W.

That's what you get for making all those GTX 480 196.75 housefire jokes.

i use an antec 750w bronze psu, shouldn't that be enough?

rolled back to catalyst 15.7.1 for now

>>51612751
What model? It's not about the wattage, but the quality (and maybe age) of the PSU.

Impossible op.

AMD throttles under heat. You literally just took off your fan hoping to start a meme.
